🏘️ Quicken — The Quickening

A Living-World AI Overhaul — Now Available, v0.3.9 BETA

Skyrim's people have always kept a schedule. They have never kept a memory.

Every NPC in Skyrim knows where to stand at nine in the morning. None of them knows why. A man is butchered in the market at noon, and by one o'clock the market is full again, the same faces at the same stalls, as if nothing had happened. Because to them, nothing did.

Quicken is the Master's answer to that. It is not another set of schedules — it is what sits underneath them. A town that is frightened, a woman who is grieving, a merchant who is brave enough to open his shop anyway, and a baker who saw what you did in the square and has not forgotten it.

It is built to replace ANY AI OVERHAUL — not to sit beside them, and not to need a stack of patches to get along with your load order. More on how, below.

✨ What's included:

🌫️ Every town has a mood — each of the nine holds keeps its own fear and grief. A murder in Whiterun frightens Whiterun, not Markarth. When a hold is afraid, people stop going out at night and a curfew settles in. When it mourns, the temple fills. Then time passes, the numbers fall, and the town moves on — slowly, the way towns do.

🎭 Every adult has a temperament — five traits that belong to that person and persist in your save: sociability, courage, curiosity, devotion, discipline. The same bad news does not land the same way on two people. The brave one keeps her stall open. The sociable one goes looking for company. The devout one goes to pray. The disciplined one will not wander off during working hours no matter how curious he is.

🩸 They carry what happens to them — stress from violence, personal grief when someone they cared about dies, a need for company that builds over the day and eases when they sit somewhere warm with other people. And trust in you, which drops if you strike them or they watch you kill someone, and comes back — slowly — if you give it time.

👁️ Witnesses, not telepaths — a death only marks the people who could actually see it: same place, close enough, clear line of sight. Someone behind a wall learns nothing. Nobody in the province magically knows what you did in a cave three holds away.

🍺 Evenings out, across the province — tavern nights now run in fourteen settlements: the five great cities, plus Dawnstar, Morthal, Falkreath, Winterhold, Riverwood, Rorikstead, Dragon Bridge, Ivarstead and Kynesgrove. Between eight and ten, the people who feel like company go looking for it. The frightened stay home. Merchants and innkeepers stay at their counters, so you can still buy your bread.

🐉 A town that runs from dragons — and thinks while it runs — when a dragon attacks, civilians break for the nearest tavern or a house they belong to, across 115 mapped interiors. They prefer a door the dragon is not standing next to. If their door becomes unavailable, or they stop making progress toward it, they give up on it and try another — up to three, then they stop trying instead of running in circles. Guards, housecarls, Companions and anyone built for a fight stay out and meet it. When the sky is quiet, everyone goes back to their day.

🕯️ A full civic life — temple visits, market days, festivals, city outings, shelter from the rain, fires at night, and personal moments for Nazeem, Ysolda, Viola, Ogmund and Nurelion. All of it is wired into the mood of the town and the person living it.

👑 Named people feel named — Ysolda, Nazeem, Belethor, Carlotta, Danica Pure-Spring, Uthgerd and Jarl Balgruuf carry hand-authored temperaments instead of a rolled one. Balgruuf is brave and disciplined and does not run from a dragon; Nazeem is neither.

🔍 See inside their heads — a lesser power, Quicken – Inspect Personality. Point it at a citizen and read their five traits, how they are feeling, what they are doing right now, what is holding them back, why they made their last decision — and, during a dragon attack, which shelter they are running for and whether they have had to give up on one.

🧠 Shares a mind with OMind — if you run OMind, Quicken reads its psychology instead of keeping its own: one person, one set of fears, whichever mod is asking. Without OMind, Quicken runs on its own exactly as before.

⚙️ An MCM for all of it — every part of daily life on its own switch, personality, memory, dragon shelters, integrations, and a master switch.

🤝 It leaves other mods' NPCs alone — anyone in a scene, in dialogue, following you, or waiting on you is never pulled out of it. Quicken only ever nudges its own routines. It never teleports anyone, never stops a fight, never forces a routine on another mod's NPC.

🔥 Plays well with the house — with OStim installed, anyone in a scene is left alone until it ends; Quicken never starts or reads a scene. With OStim Sexual Fame installed, the inspector shows your notoriety in the current city, and respects anonymity.

This is not a schedule mod with more schedules. A schedule tells a person where to be. Quicken gives them a reason, and lets the reason change.

🔧 How it works — the technical part

Before building this, the Master took AI Overhaul and Immersive Citizens apart, record by record, to understand exactly why they need so many patches. Both are enormous, hand-built works. And both reach into the game's own records to do what they do:

AI Overhaul rewrites 423 NPCs, 196 cells and 12 quests.

Immersive Citizens SE rewrites 263 cells, 190 navmeshes, 1,225 placed objects and 2 NPCs.

Quicken rewrites none of them. Not one.

Every one of those rewrites is a place where another mod can collide with them — and every collision is a patch someone has to make. Quicken does not have those places:

Zero record overrides. Quicken.esp is an ESL-flagged plugin whose only master is Skyrim.esm, and it only ever creates new records. It does not touch a single NPC, cell, navmesh, quest or vanilla relationship. There is nothing in it for another mod to conflict with — which is why there is nothing to patch.

Everything reaches NPCs at runtime. Abilities, routines and personality are handed out by SPID and SkyPatcher when the game loads, instead of being baked into NPC records. A mod that edits Ysolda's face or outfit and Quicken both get what they want.

One archive, integrations inside. OStim, OStim Sexual Fame and OMind support are built in and switch themselves on only when those mods are present. There is no patch collection, no FOMOD, nothing to pick.

Two halves. A small brain keeps the state of each hold (fear, grief) and lets it decay over game time. The body is the routines, and each one simply asks the brain and the person, "should I be doing this right now?" — the same way the game already checks the time of day.

It costs what it has to, and no more. Only NPCs who are actually loaded near you think; they update every half-minute or so, staggered so a crowded city does not spike all at once, and you can slow it down in the MCM. Nothing scans the whole world. Nobody keeps a growing list of corpses — memory is kept as numbers, not as a pile of events that bloats your save.

An open door for other mods. A small Papyrus API lets another mod read or adjust a trait, or tell Quicken that someone was helped or threatened.

📦 Installation

Disable any ai overhaul and every patch that depends on them. Quicken replaces them; running them together means two brains fighting over the same people.

Install with your mod manager and let it overwrite any older Quicken build. No FOMOD, no behavior engine, no patches to pick.

Start on a new game if you can. Load in, wait a moment for the town to wake up, then use Inspect Personality on someone.

⚠️ Important

Personality is added to citizens as they load, and changes to that on an existing save are not something I will promise you yet. Use a fresh character, or a save you are willing to lose, while this is in beta. Leave any followed characters and quest NPCs to their quests — Quicken does, too.

🧪 Beta notes

This is a beta, and it is a big one. The core is here — the moods, the temperaments, the witnesses, the evenings out, the dragons. What is not here yet is listed below, honestly, so you are not looking for it.

Known limits, so nobody is surprised:

City overhauls can move doors and houses. Quicken never edits a city, but if your city mod moves a door, an ordinary routine can still point at the old one. Dragon evacuation already recovers from that; everyday routines learn it next. Tell me which mod and where.

The dragon shelters cover the base game's interiors. Houses added by mods and the DLCs are not mapped yet; an NPC with nowhere mapped to run simply keeps their normal AI.

Seven authored personalities, all in Whiterun. Everyone else rolls a temperament that stays stable for them — sensible, but not hand-written.

No new dialogue yet. They feel it; they do not talk about it. That is coming.

If you play it, these are the things worth telling me about, in this order:

Do they differ? Inspect three or four people in the same town. The traits should not match.

Does it stick? Save, quit, load. The same person should have the same five numbers.

Does the town flinch? Kill someone in a market in daylight. That evening, fewer people should head to the tavern. Give it a day or two and they should drift back.

Do only the witnesses remember? One person watching, one behind a wall. Only the first should carry it.

Do the villages go out? Riverwood or Dawnstar, between eight and ten at night. Not everyone should go — and the innkeeper should still be behind the counter.

Do they run from dragons? Civilians should make for a door and get inside. Guards and Uthgerd should not. If a door is locked, watch whether they pick another.

Do they come back out? After the dragon, everyone should return to their day within seconds, not stay hidden forever.

Does it leave your other mods alone? Followers, quest NPCs, OStim scenes — nobody should be dragged out of what they were doing.

How does your city feel? If a big town stutters, tell me your load order size. Performance in a real, heavy install is the thing I cannot measure on my own.

🗺️ Where it is going

No dates. The Master does not ship on a schedule; he ships when it is right. But this is the road:

Destinations that hold up — homes, workplaces and taverns read from the game you actually run, and the same give-up-and-try-another sense the dragon evacuation already has, for every routine. Modded houses and city overhauls understood rather than guessed at.

Whole communities, not just people — a household or a guild that lives together: shared meals, training, work that is split between them, and a moment where they all meet before going back to their own duties. It starts with Whiterun — a merchant, a worker, a fighter — and Balgruuf gets a day that actually looks like a Jarl's.

Friendships that do things — two people who like each other walk together, visit each other, sit with each other when one of them is grieving.

The Voice — short lines that match what a person actually lives: the frightened one mentioning the murder, the grieving one mentioning the funeral.

Memory of people and places — someone ambushed on a street avoids that street. Someone you helped remembers you did.

Rumours with a source — a witness tells a friend, the friend tells the tavern, and the news travels as far as people actually carry it. No omniscient town.

Small personal goals — saving up for something, looking for work, visiting family.

Local reputation with context — hero, criminal, stranger, regular, depending on who saw what.

Personality that matures — courage and trust shifting slowly after the same thing happens again and again, without anyone losing who they are.

Every city, not just Whiterun — authored personalities across the other holds, then Dawnguard and Dragonborn.

💜 Thank you

A living world is the least glamorous thing to build and the easiest to take for granted when it works. You are paying for someone to sit with the plumbing of Skyrim until it has a pulse, and that is not a small thing to trust someone with. Thank you.

The Master tore the clock out of this province and put something that beats where it used to be. I have been watching them since. They are not the same people any more.

Be careful what you do in front of them. It stays now.

This is immensely interesting!

Luna-llena

I cant wait to try this out. Thanks! 😊

Miss Katonic

Good thing I've been rebuilding a beta test specific modlist (I finally move to MO2, I so badly wanted to use Vortex 😅).

Gozfulk

sounds great still waiting to play my game no "address library "

Muse

Oh wow, this is interesting. I cant belive you are outputting at this phase. However, if i could ask, please make it vortex compatible, let it check for files if missing and point out to where to get those necessary files . please.

Lirael Atelier

hi, it's vortex compatible, i use vortex. hope you enjoy. This one has much to evolve

Lirael Atelier

hoope you enjoy it! this one will be great, still beta. but i alrealdy replace the Ai in my game.

Anthony Johns

I don't know what mods i have that conflict with this mod

Muse

But vortex compatible mods will give alert what prerequisite is missing. I would apreciate if there's a gui type installation in vortex for all your mods compiled into 1 package, where we can select unselect what mods we need and it has all prerequisite in it. I have now installed few of your mods and unfortunately messed it up, will need to go back to my base mod setup of A and I from vortex and redo.

Ravingbantha

I love you mods. I was wondering if there was a collection that uses these mods?

letssimle

god damn... you are maked ai-overhaul without lots of patches needed.. you are crazy genius
