I think you'll really benefit from a rewatch of the first 2 episodes. I think you missed a lot.

I have actually been rewatching them while editing and I’ve enjoyed them SO much more the second time around! I think the Off Campus comparisons threw me off quite a bit when I first watched, ngl. I also think I struggled to get invested in the relationship at first, but now that I’m invested, watching their initial meetings is so much more enjoyable! Obviously things are going to be missed when it’s a first-time reaction, but I hope you’ve still enjoyed watching along with me :)

Oh that's great! I think everyone missed things the first time around. I also don't understand the comparison to Off Campus. That was a fun, YA show. This is totally different and I understand how that probably threw you off. You will also want to rewatch after you get to the end of the last episode. There are just so many things you learn by the end that will change how you view the characters when you rewatch. I can't wait to see your reactions to the last half of the season!

Still in 2026 there aren't OUT pro hockey players. One guy in a lower level. It just isn't "safe" for them and Ilya in Russia? Not okay to be bi. TOXIC all around. Please have an open mind for the rest. It is so worth it.

100% agree Tess.. noone ever gets everything on the first watch (or even the 2nd 😊) So glad you've gone back and enjoyed them more 💚

Re Shane and Scotts interaction on the ice this episode: It took place in Oct/Nov 2013 - 4 months before the Sochi Olympics in Feb 2014 ( about the same time as Ilya and Shanes first time in ep 2). They did not show this fight in ep 2 as it wasnt relevant for the storyline of that episode and as you can see, by the time Scott and Shane meet again in Sochi, their on ice fight's been forgotten. It's common to insult (chirp) each other in hockey and often doesn't mean anything. Players get over it quickly. This inteaction freaked Shane out cause Scott said "you're starting to sound like him" meaning Ilya. Shane's biggest fear is being found out, so he snaps back, causing the fight. Our boy has no chill at all! Some simple hockey context (suggest a quick google if you want to know more, cause its too complicated for me and not important to this story): During most of the season, Scott is captain of New York Admirals (an American team), Shane is captain of Montreal Metros (a Canadian team). Ilya is captain of Boston Raiders (another American team). They're all in the same division/conference (Eastern conference) so they compete against each other regularly in the early part of each hockey season. At the Olympics, they represent based on their country of birth - Scott is captain of USA team, Ilya is captain of Russia team, and Shane is captain of Canada team - so again, they're all competing against each other. In ep 1 we meet Scott for the first time at the All Star game. He and Shane are on the same team for this one weekend only. All Star games are by invitation only. They happen once a year and bring together all the best players to complete in skills competition and to play a 'friendly' game. Its kind off like the district sports carnivals you go to during high school. Each year the All Star game is a different theme, which is why in ep 1 Shane and Ilya are playing against each other (theme was team north america vs team Europe) whereas the other All Star game in ep 5 is a different theme - east vs west (eastern conference players vs western conference players). Hope that rambling made sense and answered your question! Im not a hockey fan at all btw, but HR has that effect on people... I needed to deep dive to understand it too!

My thoughts on hockey culture and the parallels between our two relationships. Context: Hockey is rumored to be a very toxic, homophobic culture, not just within the sport but amongst much of the fan base (even today). Scott's fear of coming out is tied to him being an orphan. He was sponsored by St Thomas foundation (the fundraiser they were at where he gave his speech) and his hockey team is his only remaining family. He thinks that if he was outted, he would likely lose that and might also be dropped from the league (not directly because of his sexualty but they would find other reasons to get rid of him). Scott and Kip do have great communication. But they are both a little older and more experienced and they still couldn't make it work. Their story is less complicated than our main boys. This episode does a good job at highlighting how just how much more difficult it is for Shane and Ilya. They're younger, both are in the closet, their careers are embedded in Ice Hockey (toxic and homophobic). Ilya is on a working visa in US - if he lost his hockey contract, he'd have to return to Russia, where being queer is dangerous - he would end up in jail, and don't forget he's high profile so it would bring a lot of shame to his family. Shane is struggling with internalised homophobia. He would also lose his brand deals. He loves hockey, it means everything to him (thats book lore), so if he lost his contract, he'd be devestated. He'd also feel like he was letting his parents down, not to mention failing in his representation as an asian player in a white dominated sport. Then there's the public rivalry between them that the league and the media play up. If it came out that these arch rivals were sleeping together, they'd be slaughtered by their fans. It's so messy.
