Thank Christ my beloved series is back😭

charlie.m

I often envy people who have true faith and I wish I still believed, mostly to quell the fear of whether or not there is anything after death. And I think that because I do not know, I personally would not do what he did. If I had faith I know I would, because I would know no matter the pain I felt or those I care for felt, it would be ok in the afterend, unfortunately I do not know, therefore I live my life for different reasons and by different criteria I make my actions. Which sucks I guess :/

Rachel Hubble

Next time you need an actually good movie for this series (after I presume yall do a bunch of bad ones) you gotta do Prince of Egypt

Abby Amsel

I was listening to these the other day and I thought, "I really hope they continue this." What a wonderful surprise!

SJ Faubert

This series has been oddly healing for me. I hope it continues!

TR0JJAAN

Prince of Egypt or Joshua and the promised land ! ( those seem like a good recommendation and a good joke movie ).

Mark Smiley

Have you guys considered the series the chosen? I love it since it paints Jesus as a cool fun guy before anything else.

Jaime Timesamillion

Y'all remember your youth groups watching pretty much any horror movie that had anything to do with The Devil™️ or demons as the bad guy? Do you think there's high school church kids being shown Long Legs as an example of your typical non-christian aka devil worshipper's behavior?

Casey Francis Alger

My mother has been trying to get me to watch it, but she told me it had a dedicated app and the idea of accessing Jesus through the Google Play Store is too much for me.

Mark Smiley

lol I love that last sentence. It’s no only available through the app though, you should be able to find the show on some streaming services

Emily L

The description of the scene between Franz and the judge was powerful just to hear about it. Gotta watch this movie

Garrett Lewis

Every time I see one of these I get so excited

Bishibosh44

I've been very emotionally removed from myself lately, feeling like I need to cry but not having the emotional presence to do so. Hearing the emotion in Beth and Matt's voices as you dug into the commentary tipped me over. I just want to thank you both for this very personal and beautiful reflection. Idk if I have the energy to actually view this film but I'll put it on the list.

Leon Schönberg

I was crying at the end of this episode can't imagine what the movie will do to me

McNeilly Fieweger

I immediately started crying when Beth talked about being children of a father of generation.

MancerMancer

What’s weird for me is that I just listened to an episode of talking dads where Matt references this movie.

Breo Padden

Do a collab with good all awful movies please

Natatta

God, I was legit crying when Matt read the last letter and I haven’t even watched this movie. I know I definitely have to, but I’m scared to cry even more

Nelson Carney

Really incredible work, y'all. This made for an incredible day of listening

Noah Allen

I really needed this alternative view on a powerful message. The super pessimistic takes on Christian movies has been very eye opening on how weirdly cultish I was raised. But it was very discouraging to have something like your childhood and faith so shit on. I have learned a lot listening to these and always leave with a strange feeling. It hammers home for me how important it is to find your own faith and truth, and not letting others opinions be your foundation.

MechanizedMan

I would love you guys to go over Silance

Bridget Maryalice

"Heroes that don't change the course of history. That do not change much in their time." I am undone.

Pedro Machado Figueira

I came for silly banter about mediocre and poorly written media and stayed for the amazing and compelling review. Adding this one to my watch list. What a treat guys ❤️

Ian Hamilton

Amazing ep. I love hearing your genuine intellectual takes on ethics and faith. Thanks guys!

Alex Archambault

Oh my god in my middle school in like 2010 they spent a week hyping up this speaker coming by telling us graphic details of the columbine shooting and then on the day of the presentation the speaker recited Cassie Bernall’s story (according to the book) and I stg everyone started crying they really tried to force us to trauma bond presumably so no one would shoot up anything

Isaac Amis

As a former kid who who literally grew up spending every weekend in church I adore this series.

Levi Mock

I can't express enough what this series means to me as a consistantly struggle person of faith and as just a human being. There's so much gold for anyone who chooses to listen and meditate upon it. I love it and enjoy not just listening, but re-listening to every episode, this one being the strongest thus far.

Levi Mock

Also, can't wait for you guys to get to Noah.

BörkBörk

I'm not a Christian, and I haven't seen the movie, but just hearing you talk about it brought tears to my eyes. Holy shit

JaggedPaintchip

I want this to be a individual bi weekly to weekly podcast

Heartland Animation

I’ve been rubber necking religion for about a year now. One of my friends found christ recently and she told me something sort of strange about covenants, which made me want to study the bible to see what it was about. “Whats hype about the bible, is the bible hype?”. I ended up reading the bible front to back, except hebrews… it didnt really compel me faith wise. It definitely educated me…I find this podcast interesting especially as someone non-aligned. I watched passion of the christ last night and this movie today. I guess i want to share with you that the humanity that franz shows is very strong, his morals and i guess faith. I liked the film enough to like it. But did it lead me to christ? nah. Do movies like this keep me thinking about christ? Yeah i think so. I wonder if anyone else feels similar to me in that these stories are really interesting (the bible and this film) but after engaging with them that person just doesn’t believe. Not in any sort of arrogant way, but it doesn’t affect them. I dunno, you would think that after all of this study these teachings and messages would penetrate me a bit deeper, and being able to understand that millions of people believe would compel me, or that my closest friend believing so dearly that there is an icon of christ in every room in her house, would compel me too. Nope. Thanks for making this podcast, its nice for a rubber necker like me

Toni

Hi i wot to learn how you edit your podcast and I love listening to all the extra content I am actually listening to your podcast for the 2 time gust that now I have all of the talking dad's and bonus episode soo every thing makes a lot more sense

Toni

Sorry the beginning is I would like to learn how you edit your podcast and Sorry for any wrong spelling I'm dyslexic

james carter

Well damn now I have to watch it

pixebo

Great series! I also thought of the “she said yes” story right away, specifically the flyleaf song

pulled a muscle yearning

To Beth's point on the left. I think the American left specifically is an interesting beast. We start from this default of the average American being an alienated subject with I think largely poor social skills. Especially suburban life is not experienced as a community member, it's largely just your family and friends, and that's it. The American left (in its modern conception) also comes from people who were often raised by Democrats or formerly/presently identify as such, which is steeped in a neoliberal politics that is overwhelmingly moralizing, often to cover for the really quite bad policy that is passed, and the policy that is claimed to be upheld, but rarely pushed for (healthcare, enshrining abortion rights in law, ending the electoral college, etc etc). So you end up with this group of asocial morally righteous individuals who espouse a leftist ideology, yet approach it with the political stylings of calculating consultant driven democratic politics, which is to say moral purity. The underlying reason for a leftist to have left social morals like feminism, pro-LGBTQ+, anti-racism, etc is because these groups are also of the working class and share the same exploited relationship to capital. These moral positions are crucial to sustaining a social order that holds power democratically and socially. An example of collapse of this is the recording musicians union. In the 1940s there was a two year long strike by recording musicians (which spawned the rise of acappela music, by the way). Through this a contract was won that had record companies paying into a fund to hire musicians to put on free concerts and stay employed rather than working gig to gig. Unfortunately this all fell apart because this contract was allowed to be ratified with black musicians earning a lower pay than white. This obviously drove racial animosity and within 10-20 years the union was all but dead. I suppose my point is that leftists should focus on building community, and engaging in class solidarity, leaving room for forgiveness and growth among their class allies. Your coworker may have retrograde views on trans people, but when attacks on trans care are revealed to be the attacks on healthcare for fellow working class people that they are, that is where solidarity comes in and how one can learn to love thy neighbor. Also, I think New Atheism is under-studied in its destructive consequences and impoverished scientism. I've recently come to appreciate the sort of vauge spiritualism that is so prevalent these days. I think hard atheism does a poor job of tying one emotionally to their day to day lived experience, and while destructive in most of its modern forms, religion can also be a point of community and can tie one emotionally to morally righteous positions.

here to suffer

This makes me want a Christian movie where the first half has the same problems as the other movies i.e. nothing really bad happens and if you believe no matter what you will be fine but the second half the main character gets shot or anything that ends up with him dying it's out of there control and it's humans fault to then deal with the question why god let's bad things happen to good people

Luke Schultz

Yes new episode! Love to see it

Baileyr

Did anyone read DC Talks book Jesus Freaks? Back when I was Christian in elementary school I read that book all the time.

Maddie

Boy oh boy just listened to this right before watching a last week tonight segment on the West Bank Settlements. Guess morality is the theme tonight.

Nate

From an exmormon, please have a look at saints and soldiers. I would love to hear your take!

Lienisaur

I honestly feel like doing what's right is the best and easiest for me. Even if I won't benefit from the results, atleast I can live with myself and the thought that I'm trying to be the change I want to see in the world. And I don't believe in any god, I believe that people and animals have feelings and we need nature and this world to sustain us. I don't have to change people, I don't have to force people to do what I believe, but I do and I hold myself accountable.

Brian O'Sullivan

Watched this movie just to listen to the podcast. Not dissapointed at all. I love your takes on it. I came out of this with a new appreciation for the film.

Jess Houwen

How...do you keep finding these? I feel like I know about like 3 movies: The Shack, Thr3e, and that Frank Peretti one...

Idle Beans

Idk if y'all take suggestions but if you want something trashy to watch that absolutely doesn't take itself seriously I highly recommend The Velocipastor (2018)

Ian McKenyon

Ok I get STUPID excited any time they do one of these! Such a great and respectful way to tackle the bizarre world of Christian movies

Rackson

Christian here, just want to say Matt and Beth are the perfect amount of respectful with these movies and the faith community

Jersey Berry

If yall wanna see an absolutely insane movie go watch Faith like Potato’s. my grandparents had me watch it when i was like 5 it was such a horrible trauma for me i haven’t watched it since.

Emma Davis

I’ve been listening to old episodes of Story Break and I’d like to petition that episode #160 where the guys break The Bible, be added into the Christerion Collection. I need an episode on their idea for the story of the entire Bible in 90 minutes 😆

Jesse Barbour

The me of 10 years ago needed to hear Matt's little paragraph about "judge not lest ye be judged"

Anne Buzzelli

I'm very disappointed that Beth & Matt didn't even hint at the current genocide of Palestinians. Every theme, lesson, caution, and moral failure that they touched on is demonstrated by this conspicuous event (apparent as long as one's sphere of information expands beyond mainstream media). They referenced slavery, Trump, & the Left in general, so why not a real-time genocide? Way too many people simply refrain from mentioning the slaughter of nearly 200,000 people, while in this movie Franz stood up and risked his whole damn life! Would Jesus be cool with what most of us are doing in the face of these atrocities, especially USians whose taxes pay for the weapons? I’m sure Jesus and all the other deities would say an emphatic nope to that. They'd at least want us to boycott Starbucks & talk about it on our podcasts. In the words of Aaron Bushnell: “‘What would I do if my country was committing genocide?’ The answer is, you’re doing it. Right now.”

GoblinGuy

I was thinking the same thing. It’s a little disappointing how they seemed so moved by the film and never connected it to Aaron Bushnell or the genocides globally in general (Palestine, Congo, Sudan, etc). Especially considering they aren’t in any danger like Franz was- even mentioning one of the issues listed could bring SO many people into this conversation.

Anne Buzzelli

Thank you for widening the focus to other genocides, like in Congo & Sudan. My focus tends to get stuck on Palestine and I feel badly about that. To your point, even though they're not in danger like Franz was, maybe they fear their careers are at risk? Frivolous compared to Franz, but Susan Sarandon, Melissa Barrera & Yuval Abraham are examples of professional 'trouble' that speaking out can bring. As non-judgemental as Franz was depicted to be, I bet even he'd give a side eye to that excuse.

GoblinGuy

If that is the reason, I would genuinely be surprised considering how much they talk about being leftist and shitting on the right? Like, I would SLIGHTLY understand if they never talked about politics, but they have repeatedly (either ribbing themselves for always bringing up politics or genuinely mentioning the marginalized) so I don’t understand why Palestine would be different? Adds more salt to the wound imo. They also OWN DnDads, so it’s not like they would be fired.

Josh Mangan

You don't know what work they're doing towards that cause outside of the podcast. It's not useful to police others because you don't think they're doing advocacy right.

kt

I dunno honestly I think it’s weird to fault a dungeons and dragons podcast for not speaking on it. I get where you’re coming from but I don’t think it’s necessarily fair to be disappointed.

Maximum S Labrador

This is the example of the left eating their own Beth was talking about. It's ok to talk about a film with themes like this without bringing up every other horrific thing that's going on in the world..... and it does not mean that they don't deeply care about the horrific situation in Palestine and other similar humanitarian disasters happening worldwide.

Maximum S Labrador

I am the same as you, I do feel a deep connection to something though... just not a specific religion or religious figure. I haven't seen this film but hearing Matt and Beth talk about it had me in tears.... especially that last scene. It broke me on multiple levels.

Mandy Gay

This is one of my favorite series by the cast as an ex v active Christian kid 😭

Beck Webster

Love the episode! So glad you keep releasing these, and I’m always excited to see a new one up :)

GoblinGuy

I understand what these replies are trying to say, but advocating for someone *we pay money to regularly* to speak up on their main platform about a genocide ISNT “eating our own”. We aren’t saying they aren’t “REALLY leftist” or that they don’t care/don’t do things privately, we are upset that in no way have they spoken up for a genocide that has been in the lime light for nearly a year PUBLICLY. They have a platform that reaches thousands, and just one mention could genuinely bring more eyes to Palestine and Palestinians. We are disappointed that the DnDads group has talked about drinking Starbucks in this last month (one of the main boycotts due to their support of Isreal) while *still* not bringing up Palestine, even in a video that would make a lot of sense! The movie they talked about is specifically about standing up for what you know is right, mentioning someone like Aaron Bushnell (a vet who committed self immolation to get more eyes on Palestine) would not only help politically, but completely fit the video! He stood up for what he knew was right, and lit himself on fire for it! Bringing up these grievances doesn’t suddenly mean we hate the DnDads cast, it means we care enough about them and their platform to want them to speak up! We believe they DO care which is why we’re bringing it up. It makes sense thematically they would bring up SOMETHING related. They have made (part) of their brand being leftist, so it’s not like this is a group that’s never brought up politics.

Abby Normal

I’m crying just listening to them describe the movie; if I watch this I might turn to dust.

Matt

The main characters decision is objectively immoral. His actions directly caused harm and no harm would have come from just saying some fake words

kt

This is a dungeons and dragons podcast. The only thing they’re obligated to speak about is table top gaming.

Jimothy

The real trick about the prisoners' dilemma is to imagine every prisoner is innocent. If you knew you had done no wrong, and had doubts about the others, would you keep your mouth shut? If every character in the movie who considered themselves a good person had the conviction of the main character, then he would have lived.

Jimothy

Recovering Catholic here. For me the "always" in the wife's last words to him doesn't read as "I will see you in Heaven" but as "I will always back your decision", or even "I will always believe that I did the right thing in backing your decision". I very much need to watch this movie.

Abby Gibbs

Would nacho libre be a good movie for the christerion collection? Its based on a true story

Jarod

I would love to hear your opinions of hacksaw Ridge.

Blythe Atkinson

In defense of Silence, it wasn't a Scorsese original. It was a pretty faithful adaptation of the novel by Shūsaku Endō, and I don't think it can be interpreted properly solely through a Western understanding of faith, persecution, and perseverance. I also think the situations of the protagonists of the two films vary enough that it's difficult to compare them. One is being asked to turn his back on his faith to participate (even passively) in evil. The other is being asked to turn his back on his faith OR participate in evil (by choosing his pride as a martyr over the lives of his congregation). Both choose to abstain from evil, even if the contexts and consequences of that choice vary greatly. All this is to say: give "Silence" a read if you are interested. The movie was decent, but the book is better.

Anne Buzzelli

This is very well said, GoblinGuy. I appreciate you.

Lindsay Hollmann

Genuinely like this almost brought me to tears like 3 times. You have to live your life with the faith that there are other good people put there, that are doing good things. 😭❤️

Justthingstbh

I also think that this comment is ignoring the very real implication that just because they say "The war is almost over" does not mean that Franz would actually be able to not be part of the Nazi mechanism. He is being drafted after all. He cannot know what sort of horrors he will be forced to commit.

Justthingstbh

I think the reason why it is a very palatable movie and does not feel like other Christian movies that have been talked about, is because it's not trying to convert you, not even slightly. It just, tells a story of a man who had faith, and it doesn't show horrible things happening to those that dont have it, i.e. like in gods not dead. But it just shows a man having moral principles. Which he could have with or without Christianity

Alex 9j

Lets get some more please!

Palindromedar

Did not expect to cry today over a podcast about a christian movie but here we are.

Faith Jasmine

I would love to hear your thoughts on The Shack

Joey Selner

Not sure if you plan on making more of these, but I was listening back to some Story Break and Matt brought up Noah, I would be interested in hearing about that, as well as The Passion of the Christ of course

Claire Wilson

I really hope you continue with this podcast. You two bounce off of each other so well and share such interesting and well considered ideas. I love listening to this.

YeastHasRisen

Idk if you guys are still doing this, but if you’re planning on it, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this movie… “2025 A World Enslaved By A Virus”

Bryer

I have been convinced. I have to stop listening to this episode until I’ve finished A Hidden Life myself

Sheriff Teddy

Would you to be willing to put on a watch party for these movies? My mom is an ex-Catholic and a huge movie buff. I think it would be a fun bonding activity for us.

lovo

Please do more!!

TheRealDJake

There's a new Christian movie: The Chosen: Last Supper. We need a christerion on this!

Honey Debelloc

Just listened to all of these back to back. Loved the scope of movies, and the descriptions and letters in this one moved me to tears as well. I'm not really even religious but this is such fascinating and rewarding content. Eager for the hinted Passion of the Christ. ( also conclave? Maybe? Cause it was so good???)

Tacos4me

I’d be very interested in seeing their thoughts for “A Case For Christ”

Book of Days?

Daniel Roberts

Firstly guys thank you. This one moved me to tears and now am determined to watch it. What a beautiful 45min of audio. Really truly appreciate this

påskesakse

I am a prior danish protestant and for my confirmation our priest showed us the movie 'Adam's apples'. Not sure it would qualify as a christian movie since it isn't exactly devout, but I would love to hear your thoughts on it.

Andrea Boon

"no one could do that kind of thing without some kind of faith" - Matt Well fuck us atheists, I guess. Dude either you believe we can have full morality without faith or you don't. I can see Matt is not a FULLY recovered Catholic.

Will_pal

That’s interesting, as my immediate thought on the line was, it’s easier to stand firm on an absolutely moral stance when you believe there is an afterlife, and it’s harder to get to absolute morality when you don’t believe there is anything after death,

organsofsight

This feels like a bad (pun not intended) faith take on what Matt was trying to express re: the central theme. My impression was that based on Matt’s own experience he believes it would be incredibly difficult to go through the situation described without faith, not a blanket statement that those without faith *can’t* do it. It’s possible to believe both things but have a difficult time imagining one because you have different life experiences.

Brieaunna Avery

I REALLY need you guys to do an episode about the Silence. As a former evangelical, where it songs like Cassie by Flyleaf were aspirational (I.e, dying for your faith), the idea of laying down your own pride to save those you are responsible for was very effecting. It’s the opposite in some ways of this film but I think it would make a great companion to this episode.

Brieaunna Avery

Damn I gotta listen to the whole thing before I comment lol

Nirta

* omw to watch it now * 👀
