I actually remember the shoe policy right after 9/11. I had traveled pre 9/11, no problem, the month before. Two months later, the airport was going through each and every tiny part of my luggage, had me pulling off shoes, etc. I also set off the alarm once with my sweater and had to go through this machine where they scan your body or some weird thing.

I love the talk about idea versus execution. Any time this stuff comes up I think of the fact I hear studying film that Hitchcock hated making movies, he loved developing the movie. When developing he could make the perfect film, but actually making it meant compromising and corrupting it from that into something never quite what he wanted (Psycho intended to be more violent/gory for example). Also, on the moth heel turn I loved the moment it happened and I realised none of them talked to Mothman about the moth (to my recollection anyway).

A) I'm so not ready for season 3 to end. I've fallen in love with these characters and their dynamics and I'm way too invested lol. That said, I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens with season 4 and (presumably) continuing the story from the first two seasons. B) Fun fact: The door from Titanic isn't actually a door. It's like a decorative panel above it the door as part of the doorframe. And there are pictures you can find online of just the "door" that you could use for your custom floats (which 100% need to happen).

It is such a specific market in a few major cities unless you’re lucky enough to get the occasional traveling version, which are usually fairly expensive cause they’re rare. Piracy is legit important bc archival reasons. Many more media would have been lost if not for a bunch of people wanting stuff for free. And also I think a big reason piracy is growing again bc you don't own digital stuff you "buy" anymore. It is just a license to use. Which is so anti consumer and fucked. A lot of the time I buy stuff and pirate it at the same time bc I actually want to own it and not just have the right to stream. It's complicated and as a creative I want people to get paid ofc but also as a librarian I want people to have access to information and art. Yeah, I think if you live in NYC and have access to Broadway shows like Beth is talking about in this ep, that's one thing. You live a subway ride away, you've got time off to get to the theater for rush tickets, the tickets are available, and yay you have yourself a fun little date night. But the conversation I've seen around pirating Broadway shows specifically is about the vast majority of people outside of NYC who will literally never in their entire lifetime have access to rush tickets, let alone the privilege of just popping over to Broadway for a show once or twice or thrice a year. It's about the disenfranchised people in NYC who live in near-poverty conditions and can't afford rush tickets because they have lives and jobs. Broadway has been accused of gatekeeping for YEARS because of this and since at least 2021, access to art has become a luxury and a status symbol. Look at how many people are going to My Chemical Romance or Lady Gaga concerts this summer just because they can afford the tickets and it sounds like a cute time when hardcore fans can't. And yes, these shows and concerts employ sometimes hundreds of people and they all deserve to get paid but. They're being paid anyway, right? The question is how long the show runs it isn't making money, but they're not singing and dancing for tips. For instance, it's not like Pedro Pascal or the crew members of Fantastic Four get paid less if the movie's a bust or is pirated from here to high heaven. With how long production takes, they cut those checks probably way before the premiere (and if not, the unions will hear about it eventually). And in particular, with the economy being what it is, ESPECIALLY with things looking as grim as they do in Los Angeles, I'm kinda surprised there was less conversation about the people literally being priced out of access to art on top of growing censorship that means the art you pay for is potentially propaganda anyway. I'm a creative who was lucky enough to follow my dream and get to a point where I'm paid to do what I love to do (sorta, Hollywood's also collapsing in on itself right now and my career may be over, TBD). I know what it means for an artist to be able to make a living out of creating. It's an incredible feeling. I believe that under capitalism, artists should be paid for their work because duh and also because devaluing art is how we get to the point we're at now with critical engagement and media literacy being decried as overthinking or cringe. But capitalism is what it is - it controls, it consumes, it collapses under its own weight and is kept alive by a collective, stubborn belief that it's The Only Right Way to Society. When it joins forces with fascism the way we see it doing now, it's maybe more important for art to be in the hands of the people that it was created for than it is to make sure it only gets out to the people who paid for it. Also tho, I'm an anarchist so I know my thoughts on the matter are complex and controversial and you know what would really help curtail piracy? UNIVERSAL BASIC INCOME, BABY.

I think the big thing about the bootleg stuff is that it makes Broadway accessible in *other countries* or even to poor people that do not live close to musical stages. I am from a city with a lot of Musical venues, so I was lucky enough to have been able to go to shows, but I also know people who have never been able to, because with the commute, the accommodation, the tickets, shit adds up and is super expensive

This! Piracy doesn’t just.. exist. It’s a direct consequence of capitalism. People don’t pirate for no reason, it’s because it’s either too expensive or generally inaccessible. Going along with the live music analogy, most people who sit outside the venue to listen WANT to be on the inside, but can’t because all the tickets were bought, they’re disabled and the venue doesn’t work for them, or the tickets were too expensive. Very rarely do people WANT to pirate (often only really happening when the creators are putting money into genocide.)
