Holy shit, I didn’t think anyone else in the world was afraid of the old Blob movie. I was a little kid who liked spooky stuff, so I convinced my parents to let me buy the vhs from a yard sale. Keep in mind this is the old one with Steve McQueen that opens with a doowop number chipperly saying to “Beware of the Blob.” A song that’s about as terrifying as the classic Addams Family intro. Well that night I wanted to watch it, but obviously no one else in the family did. So my dad was in his office, mom was working in her craft room, and my sisters were out with friends. I’m alone in the living room watching this film and it is scaring the fuck out of me. That scene Matt describes where the blob lurches up the stick onto the man’s hand? I still think about it and it’s in the first twenty minutes of the film. Anyways by the time I finished the movie I was so disturbed I took it to my mom and dad and said it was too scary and I wanted to get rid of it. I think they were sorta amused because, again, this is the 1958 Blob starring Steve McQueen that opened with a doo-wop song. I still get deeply disturbed by melting people. I watched Nope and for a solid month after I would get visceral flashbacks to That Scene, and the tar man zombie spooked the fuck out of me. Glad to know I’m not the only one scarred by what I’m sure in retrospect is a very goofy 50s B-movie. As a horror fan it’s one of my favorite experiences to date.

The “playing video games wrong” issue in movies always knocks me out, but I think the worst example I’ve seen is in “The 40 Year Old Virgin” during the “you know how I know you’re gay” scene. Not only are they playing wrong, but the game on the screen is a PS2/Xbox Mortal Kombat game (can’t remember if it’s deadly alliance or deception), AND THEY’RE USING N64 CONTROLLERS. I lost my mind about this as a teenager.

Oh, I love listening to earlier episodes, and I actually really love season 2 lol On Swift- plenty of liberation based BIPOC creators have brought this up, and plenty of leftists have also been bringing attention to how problematic she is. As stated, this stuff is so heavily normalized that people tend to dismiss dogwhistles or downplay whats currently transpiring. Its what allows fascism to grow and get away with things. Its why liberalism allows fascism to grow unchecked, because it works within the confines of it, rather than fighting against it. Just because someone isnt explicitly fir white supremacy doesn't mean they aren't upholding it, empowering it, and utilizing it, and its especially prevalent in her material that constantly infantilizes herself and talks about how her friends are cancelled ( her MAGA friends she hangs out with, like a fascist) because she benefits from WS, uses queer and Black cultures as platforms to boost her mediocrity, and sues anyone who gets in the way. Shes always been awful, but swifties will bend over backwards for her in this weirdly toxic celebrity culture, something else that got Tangerine Palpatine in office. Not taking shit seriously is how things get missed, how fascism slides about, and gets to infect the things we love. Not calling it out helps normalize it, which hurts everyone in the long run. Now, I'm sending much love to everyone in the thread, because love is goddamn hard to come by, and easy to lose. Organize, get strapped, and fight fascism- even at the expense of your job and comfort. Peaceful is not how change happens. There is no "right place" to protest fascism. Porn Hub isn't "the right place" either, but it can still happen there as well, though you can argue that youre getting fucked by fascism harder than the people on screen are fucking, but thats beside the point. Swift is contemporary conversation, and bringing up that she upholds white supremacy can bring attention to how problematic she is and how she affects lives politically. Everything is political, from the water we drink, the air we breathe, and everything consumable. Skin, hair, art, education; its all politicized, so shying away from it only benefits the oppressors and the predatory class. Having class consciousness doesn't mean you can't enjoy things, but it does show who is and isnt safe to be around, and im seeing more unsafe people than not, which is alarming for a podcast that does a lot of good. I say this with all the respect: a bunch of yall need to wake up and do better. Show up and organize, because mobilizing without organizing does nothing- like No Kings protests and how they function within the system of oppression, rather than actually fighting the oppression. Get to know your neighbors, set up community aid, and protect those most vulnerable. We only survive together.
