"How do you say 'non-binary people' in german?" You don't 😔 Edit: I thought I'd add some context for the non german speaking readers of this comment since I figured it might be interesting to *someone* out there. While there's rising awareness and efforts to make the german language more inclusive, there's only so much we can do, especially regarding pronouns (which is why many non-binary germans use either no pronouns or use a binary one in german even if they don't in other languages, although some have imported pronouns from other languages ('dey' is probably most common, tho 'hen' also has a few adopters, shout-out to the swedes) and there's statistically probably at least some that use it pronouns, although since usually in german you don't even use it pronouns when referring to a specific animal, it is less common than in english) and even more widely accepted solutions to parts of the issue (eg the gender asterisk, example: Freund*innen) are still imperfect (eg that one causes accessibility issues, including (but probably not limited to) with regards to screen readers for visually impaired folks and for intellectually disabled folks and those with limited literacy) and the whole thing is basically still being worked out and we'll probably be chipping away at it for at least a few more years before we have widespread suitable language in german to talk about and refer to non-binary folks in german. I mean we even have a legally recognised non-binary gender entry in germany that now you can opt in even if you're not intersex (which was the case before the self determination bill) and also the option to have no gender entry, and neither of those options have a proper established way for the government or anyone else to even address you (plus the name they picked for the gender entry is kinda stupid imo, it's "divers" which means "diverse" or "miscellaneous" - hilariously there was a place a while ago that went viral for addressing non-binary folks not as Herr or Frau but as Taucher - the german word for divers, as in ppl who go underwater) so. Tldr: how do you talk about or address non-binary ppl in german at this point in time? You don't.
