this is interesting from a physics nerd perspective. because if the granddads are moving faster than light somehow, and we’re taking for granted that time dilation would still happen for whatever reason if that were possible, then the equation for their time Δt’ relative to someone stationary would involve imaginary numbers because the equation is Δt/[sqrt(1-(v^2/c^2))] so since v>c, there’s imaginary numbers in the denominator. just funky to consider

That's... an interpretation. The more supported interpretation is just the speed limit c-- no object with mass can exceed the speed of light in a vacuum. This is also carried out by the relativistic kinetic energy equation K= (y-1)mc^2 where y = 1/(1-u^2c^-2)^1/2. As u -> c, K -> infinity, so it's just physically impossible to reach c. If we imagine a particle popped into existance moving faster than light, things could get weird. Again, when u>c, y is imaginary and K is complex. Energy is a scalar value, so there's no conventional interpretation for a complex value of energy. There are some funky fringe theories which redifine energy, but those get into unfalsifiable and questionably scientific territory. I also think that redifining energy for this thought experiment is pointless since again, it is impossible for matter to exceed the speed of light anyway.

yes im aware which is why i mentioned that we have to take for granted they somehow are moving faster than light. on the previous episode i commented about how most likely time dilation wouldn’t actually be happening because the dilation is caused by the issue of classical physics reference frames falling apart when velocity is approaching c. but since this is a work of fiction and the creator has said both that relativity is at play and yet somehow things are moving faster than light, we enter the realm of the purely theoretical. i forget the guy who proposed the concept of tachyons, but i believe his proposal is that they would violate causality, moving backwards in time. again im aware of the lorentz factor and whatnot, but im just taking the creators’ world at face value.

Mathematically, the children as a group age less if they go with the second route of 5-10-15-50 for a total of 80 years. The first route of 10-20-30-40 adds up to a total of 100 years of aging between them all. Sounds harsh be ause one kid gets more screwed out of a life back on earth than others, but I think Route 2 is the way to go on this one.

You’re not alone on this front man. I think this is also why I prefer more reality based, realistic scenarios for TTRPGs. The situation the grandpas have been thrown into is just so insane, and in reality they’d be so freaked out and out of their element that their reaction wouldn’t be captured well in a comedy dnd podcast like this one.

see, i'd say less of like, freaked out reaction, and more of just how their reaction has been fundamentally uncurious. like, take what Beth saw in episode 2 - no reaction. The only thing that got reactions was how many references they could cram into the mall area. They don't feel like they want to know things about the setting, just make more references to the sci-fi staples that they already know and are already having to recycle warhammer and star wars - Anthony feels like the only one invested in the idea of doing scifi

Yeah I’m willing to put money that most of his stats are in strength or charisma to fit Dale’s adult archetype and did not at all check that monks are dex/wis based characters. Still can be fun and I’m happy he’s using his abilities, but the moment he starts getting saving throws or anything in that line he’s gonna not have a fun time. (Also I just hope he never tries seeing armor and goes “oh lemme put that on” since dnd beyond will just turn off all his monk stuff. Monks are unarmored XD)

Loving the new campaign! I am a bit confused at the end. Anthony said the first option was 10, 20, 30, 40 and the second option was 5, 5, 5, 50, which would mean in the second option each of the first 3 kids only age 5 years while the last one ages 50, overall being the better option IMO (the good of the many outweighs the good of the one). But, it seems like Will and the others thought it was 5, 10, 15, 65, which is much different. So, is it 5, 5, 5, 50 or 5, 10, 15, 65?
