LARP is like this kind of improv. It's amazing to discover who you can be or do in a LARP.

TDub Miner

I started one piece in January, it’s now late June and I’m 768 episodes in, it’s addictive as hell and in my opinion absolutely perfect

Logan Eliot

Ah, four men talking about anime

Sarah Strait

I hadn't heard of this one until recently and watched it a few weeks ago. My whole HEART was shattered. Then I watched it again the next day, then I made my kid watch it, then I watched it again. UGH. It's so sweet and so perfect.

Memecias

The whole time during the emotional beats I was waiting for Glen to come up and something about fucking. Feels good to be on the same wave link as Freddie.

link

if you want to watch an anime movie that’ll make you sob, watch “ride your wave”. amazing movie that tour my heart out

link

tore* . but my point still stands

Luna Luna

How do you like something twice? This made me sadder than the actual episode

petra

I find the Miyazaki anime/not anime discussion super interesting!! my animation professor from uni talked to us about how interviews with miyazaki himself showed he didn’t like his films being considered “anime” just because their Japanese. I wish I remembered more of the class and the discourse around it because it’s pretty intriguing from a screen and media perspective !

Saucey McBurgerpants

Listening to you all talk about the money and Xmas stuff made me cry at work like damn

Aidan Devlon

Hey, I don’t know who thought Will’s joke was on the line about “making fun of Grant for being gay” but like…they’re wrong. Will, I’m gay; I enjoyed the joke. The subject of the joke is that Grant is on the cusp of being that horny teenager, not that e’s gay. I hate the idea that the gay character doesn’t get the joke a straight character would have gotten because they are gay. To me, that kind of censorship makes being gay seem somehow bad instead of normal. Whether someone is sensitive about it is another thing but it definitely shouldn’t be reinforced by hushing up natural interactions specially for the gay character. And people really need to learn to ask “what is the subject of this joke? what’s the punchline calling out?” Maybe less cursive being forced back into schools and more diagramming sentences instead. I hate when people mix up something being information in a joke and it being the target of a joke. I don’t want to be left out of jokes because aim gay; I just don’t want to be made fun of for not being straight.

Garrett Durham

I would recommend the first series of Naruto, just watching the first arc gives you a real all around experience for what an anime could be. Fun goofy and seeing the world, then suddenly the most heart wrenching tragedies and growth out of nowhere.

Garrett Durham

What a wild ride. Did you continue watching more anime right after or did you have to take a break after that experience.

emjemme

Every time Will mentions Kiki’s, my inner child heals a little.

Matthew null

My first anime was deathnote. It was so dark and unlike what I thought anime would be. It really got me into jjk, aot, and Naruto

Mitochondria

Yesss cagliostro appreciation!!!

Melody

Beth’s insert was so good, it had me dying! Not to mention showing up everyone else, she was gone but still contributed. Queen 👑

AngryToddler

I always tell people to watch cowboy bebop, full metal Alchemist, and a random newer good anime. In that order. That way they get a classic, a golden era, and a newer anime to find where they wanna look for other anime afterwards

Wesley Harney

Ketchup sandwiches was a big emotional hit for myself because I have at many times in my life done that to get by

Daniel Roberts

To be introduced to anime when it was vhs and sepultura played the intro. Maybe being male as well, the wierd and violent was all there was. Guyver, Ninja scroll, fist of the north star, Tank police

Emma Bell

I wanna go backpacking with Beth before I die

Beth Sophia

Coming back through on a comfort relisten... My first anime was Speed Racer because PBS in the SF Bay Area was legit in the 80s and 90s. I bought a DVD player for the house because I missed an episode of Evangelion on KTEH and needed to go buy the DVDs. (Need to remember to grab them from my son's apartment when I help him move in a couple weeks, he stole them years back.) It's all personal taste. I like fighting robots. I like magical girls. I find Naruto hilarious. My dad randomly rented Akira when I was in high school because he knew I liked horror and it was great. If there's a genre you enjoy in books or live action you can get that in anime.

Caleb Crawford

There is a comment by Maria M higher up on this comment thread with all the animes referenced! Check it out!

Laci B

hearing a bunch of adult men acknowledge sailor moon and kiki’s delivery service as good… as someone who’s always liked more “feminine” anime and been teased by dudes about it… kind of heals something in my soul

Laci B

SATOSHI KON MENTION 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Lexi

1st comment HAZAH!

Preston Pitts

How many more episodes do y’all think before the finale? I’m not looking forward to it being over😭

Blake wilson

What level are the dads now?

Andrew Baker

It's bittersweet but based off the bonus content, I am stoked to see some new life.

Tyler Kuhn

The first anime I ever watched, that I’m kinda sad none of you said was FLCL, the original 6 episodes I think it was? Totally got me into anime and absolutely will always be my favorite.

J.S.

You can get Paranoia Agent on blu ray now, they finally printed it in America last year.

J.S.

I think they get to 69.

Era

omg yes to matts suggestion of kids on the slope, it's one of the first animes that made me really appreciate mature, character-driven story telling. eta: millennium actress is up for free on youtube if anyone wants to take up anthony's suggestion

Ellie Rohrback

I have no interest in anime, but hearing a group of people talk about something they are clearly passionate about is so wholesome.

Nathan

Do they make transcripts of talking dads? I'd love a list of all the anime suggested. I've gotten into it a bit, but mostly only the TV side of things plus Miyazaki. That list of movies sounded pretty interesting (minus Grave of the Fireflies, which I have no intention of ever watching).

Batsy Boi

I love the studio ghibli collection and I'm real glad y'all talked about it ^_^

Solidified Honey

OMG THANK YOU!!! I've been trying to figure out the name of Paranoia Agent forever! I remember watching it on early Adult Swim/Toonami and I had only bits and pieces that I could remember. And all my random search term results were getting me nowhere. You have helped me complete that mini side quest in my life.

Wendi Evergreen

Hard second on 90's Sailor Moon, it's dope as hell. For anime beginners I'd recommend: Ancient Magus' Bride- a young woman who can see spirits is bought by a fairy wizard and becomes his apprentice. Some of the best character development I've ever seen, period. Anime has a satisfying conclusion, manga is ongoing Cardcaptor Sakura- a girl accidently lets loose a book of spirits and has to find them and put them back. The other iconic 90's magical girl. More low-key and shorter than SM, with equal intensity of FEELINGS. Complete Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood- two brothers search for the Philosopher's Stone. The characters are all wonderful, the plot is tight, just practically perfect in every way. Complete Golden Kamui- a veteran of the Russo-Japanese war and a Ainu girl search for a cache of gold hidden by her father. Contains detailed and loving depictions of food, Ainu culture, and smoking hot beefcake. Ongoing Last Exile- two young couriers get wrapped up in a war and discover the secret of their world when they are hired to escort a child with a mysterious power. Also practically perfect in every way. The sequel series is not quite as objectively good, but I liked it just as much. Complete Natsume's Book of Friends- a young man who can see spirits returns the names his grandmother took. Very sweet and mellow variation of the monster-of-the-week genre. Ongoing Vision of Escaflowne- young woman is whisked away to a land of science fantasy, ft. young men with angel wings, mechs that turn into dragons, and a surprising twist cameo from a irl historical figure. A classic of the isekai genre. Complete Yu Yu Hakusho- a delinquent young man dies saving a child and is given a second chance at life in exchange for fighting demons. Cool fights, interesting characters including the very best boy, doesn't get as bogged down in either as some other shows. Complete Yuri on ICE!!!- a figure skater regains his confidence and love of skating. the first anime of figure skaters around the world! Complete

Wendi Evergreen

I did not think this'd be quite that long, whoops 😖 hope someone finds it useful!

The Lord off Stinks

Wtf happened to Darnell? Just saying should have had some Sweet Matilda pie.

SJB

Spoiler for Darnell fans: Darnell is married, and gay. Reveal in/or around the Mummy Issues episode I thiiink? Voicemail left for Darryl

SJB

If it's not 69 episodes I'll be amazed

Griffin

I found the anime suggestions interested because they went for the heavier hitting, more artistic classics anime first then Will listed all the stuff that actually sucked me into anime in his off handed comment: one punch man and my hero academia. Like I saw Princess Mononoke maybe a year or so after starting anime and was like wow this is artistic, pretty, and probably symbolic of something but much like Daryl, I didn't get it.

SJB

So Beth mentioned a feat that gives her adv. on Wisdom saving throws, which is called "slippery mind" in 5e (sorry I'm a DM), so believe she and the other non-prison-montage Dad's just got to level 15. Glen? After the Deck of Many Things? Who knows. 18ish would be my guess!

Malissa

Paranoia agent is on the Funimation app FYI

Noah Jay

Azumangah Daioh was my first anime and if you're into goofy friend comedies, it's definitely a good starter anime. Nichijou and Lucky Star are in the same vein. My favorite overall concept for an anime is Excel Saga, which maybe hasn't aged well but is impressive in just the voice acting if nothing else.

Noah Jay

It's a very particular type of person who would see FLCL as their first, go on to see other anime, and not be disappointed that the rest aren't quite so wild lol

Amanda Melendez

for newcomers to anime I like to see what genres they like, and then recommend fullmetal alchemist anyway

Colson Barnhart

It's not acting.......it's role play. Boomjams

Ultramike

I love Attack on Titan, one of the best Anime in my opinion. Loved the whole premise of it and wish I could forget everything that happens and re-watch it.

🌺Deidra🌺

I loved Ancient Magnus Bride and FMA.. Brotherhood was the best in my opinion... The other version has a different ending and it wasnt as good. lol

Gabe Newb

same here actually!

Wendi Evergreen

@deidra henson the first FMA anime got so weird after it caught up with the manga. I never finished it because the tonal shift was SO drastic and sudden LOVE Ancient Magus Bride, really hoping they'll make another season. I cosplayed Chise and Elias with my boyfriend and it's my favorite picture of us❣️

Reece Page

The fact that Ashly does Sascha’s voice in the English dub probably helped sell it to the guys. I absolutely love AOT. Just brilliant.

Jenica

A bunch of men getting together to talk about crying almost makes up for not having Beth there. One of my favorite episodes :)

The Wizard Snoop

To add to the anime dog pile: Fullmetal Alchemist, either series

Francisco Hernandez

I feel like starting with Neon Genesis as a first anime is similar to recommending someone read Watchmen as their first comic book. Like its a great show but it can be really alienating especially because its like a deconstruction of a genre, in the case of Neon Genesis a deconstruction of the anime mech genre and if you don’t have that perspective going in its pretty off-putting

Colin

I just wanted to remind you guys of a possible Christmas album, still love the idea of that as a monthly bonus this year, thanks for all the fun!

Ari Phillips

A Couple of years ago I went into a Ghibli rush and watched all the Ghibli movies i hadn't watch (Which was most) back to back, I ended up watching Kiki's delivery service, Howl's Moving Castle (Which became my favorite movie of all time) and Princess Monoke the same night. The contrast between the Joy and enchantment Howl had me feeling came crashing so hard the second I played princess Monoke, i could barely finish the movie and haven't watched it since. Do not recommend

Chai Reynolds

Anthony’s giving me big Scorpio energy in his hatred of big feelings.

Jessica

I hope beth’s knee survived the hike

nbsgamer

someone should update her wikiknees.com page.

Ronan O'malley

For people starting out with Anime now, I wouldn't recommend the classics of Dragonball and the older series as the pacing is a bit brutal to jump into. Movies like the boys said is a great start, or some of the newer hit series which have evolved into the current gen pacing

Julia Gaskill

How did the five of you meet? I feel like this has been vaguely touched upon in episodes of both Dungeons & Daddies and Talking Dads, but I'm curious about how you all ended up as friends!

Anthony Chieffo

My first anime (which was my gateway into 2nd Edition Dungeons and Dragons oddly enough) was Record of Lodoss War. A very classic fantasy adventure. I'd suggest that to anyone who is interested in D&D and trying anime. The OVA specifically

Sean Zenitram

Surprised it wasn't mentioned. Only one I've really watched series wise. Excited to watch some of these that were recommended.

Tinyhumanbrain76

BTW …… Lascivious: : reflecting or producing sexual desire or behavior especially that is considered indecent or obscene lewd and lascivious behavior

Emily L

Literally To Your Eternity will be the most sad and beautiful anime you watch next. ❤️❤️

Wandering Giant

I'm pretty sure Miyazaki himself tries to get away from being called "anime." He has a lot of criticisms directed at anime. To think Miyazaki isn't anime isn't racist, there is certainly a discussion to be had there

Rachel

I’m recently getting into anime, and having a really hard time finding a lot of their recommendations because of having no idea how to spell them. If anyone can help I got lost around when Anthony started recommending “Samurai [???]”. Thanks to these comments I got “Azumanga Daioh”, but the one he says after that I can’t seem to find.. I was able to find the rest with butchered spellings. Lol if anyone can help I’d appreciate it. (This is like the last ten minutes of the ep.)

TEschaton

Any Miyazaki is good, but I think the best starter anime is Attack on Titan. It avoids a lot of the cheesy anime tropes and is very fast paced with little too no filler episodes

Mize

i know this sounds insane, but my first anime was Devilman Crybaby

skettibiscuit

If you want an anime movie that will absolutely tear your heart out, try “your name” it is KILLER and I almost cried

Sunny G.

Not an avid anime watcher but i recommend "The Devil Is a Part-Timer"

Hannah Forster

Yessss, so sad they didn't mention it. I absolutely adore that film.

Hannah Forster

My recommendations would be anime movies wise: Your Name, A silent voice, Spirited Away, Howl's moving castle. My anime tv series recommendations would be: Mob Psycho 100, Assassination Classroom, The Promised Neverland, Kokoro connect (more obscure, it's only one season but I love it) and The disastorous life of Saiki K.

DATGUYSPENCE

Letting yall know that the mp3 link you mixed up the numbers for the episode and talking dad episode number
