The Dad Crew assemble to talk about episode 21 of the new season including how Freddie got absolutely bodied this episode, the difference between the way the Dads and the Teens make hard decisions, and Beth's process for nailing the Gerard Way vocals in the intro.

Plus, they get into the lines from the show that get stuck in everyone's head, favorite LGBTQ media, and why prequels are better than sequels.

Just catching up on the episodes and when Matt mentions the Red Rising series, *chefs kiss*, excellent example. Sensational series and probably one of the best series I've read in a LONG time. I am maybe on my 4th listen through of the series before the final book comes out in the sequel series. Book 2 of Red Riding is the best ending to any story if you're a big fan of suspense. Read them, you wont regret it. And if don't like reading, listen to them on Audible, the audio book version with Tim Gerald Reynolds is bangin. Do yourself a favour and give it a go.

Kurt Dimock

everything they were saying about good/bad sequels rings so true for the ace attorney games, apollo justice taking the themes of the original trilogy and elevating it PRIMED for takeoff, and spirit of justice being rehashed iconic characters with no purpose

Nat

I DIDNT KNOW IF I WAS MAKING THAT UP. WHERE IS IT IN YHE EPISODE?!? I CANT FIND IT

Garbage Game Night

Is there a place where he explains his discomfort with it? I find it all fascinating since it was so well received and remembered.

Garbage Game Night

I'm glad I heard them talk their thoughts through with handling Erin and then evolve into a conversation about S1 vs S2 and then even further into what makes sequels/prequels work. I'm not part of the reddit/discord discourse, so sorry if there is a dead horse around, but it's always seemed to me the tension in this season comes from the listener knowing the 'spoiler' (be it that Erin is pretty nice or that willy=bad) while the cast is pretending not to know it. On top of that the cast ACCURATELY but frustratingly playing teens who are pretty chaotic. After hearing this talk about sequels I realize that my 'notes' would make a terrible S2. That's what they tried to do in TFA - bring you back into the same universe w/o really breaking anything so you just end up with a nothingburger. Trying to write a more complex story while people improv their way through it as chaotic teens is wild and despite all that S2 is great.

Ryley Henry

When Freddy mentions the whispering arm wrestler, I'm 99% certain it's Devon Larratt he's talking about. One of the greatest arm wrestlers that's ever existed. If you wanna get into an obscure, silly sport, watch the best: Devon Larratt. Insanely talented with personality/humor that's larger than him.

Luna Luna

I’m not completely sure if Freddy is just joking for Anothny about Borderlands 2, but he is 100% correct. The writing makes Bl2 such an amazing game with an amazing story, and Handsome Jack is one of the best villains ever made

Katherine C

“Slapped me all around the Kinsey scale.” Lol Will that was golden

the chompie man

What slaps in a previous ep will brings this up and here he finally gets his revenge

the chompie man

I really wanted them to bring up arrons dr not me by saying we need therapy or something.

Lula Hiigel

I relate so hard to standing in video game fires to see if they hurt me.

Sophie

I'm way behind in sharing this, but - What kind of trees take notes? Stud-ENTS

Caleb Crawford

Oh Dragon Prince is insanely excellent, one my wife and my favorite shows!!

Caleb Crawford

Simply put, Anthony balks at any kind of praise, I don't think it's that he has anything against the games he worked on writing.

Marissa Y.

Technically, if you take notes by hand, ALL trees *make* notes. (Also it took me until this relisten to realize Stenogra-FIR. I did not understand till just now. Go forth with this knowledge, fellow patreons.) (Secretar-tree is also good)

Maggs Lollis

It makes so much sense to keep the click track in there because marching bands rehearse to them and it itches my band kid brain

The Overthinker

Can we please get a full song, with original and goofy lyrics, from Beth.

Madeleine D

Wait wait wait where are those TikTok links???

Alex

Ok, I’m kinda getting tired of the shitting on new Star Wars during teen talk. I’m trying my damndest to avoid thinking about the discourse again and these tangents keep reminding me about it 😖

RJ H

Seconded! Needed for reasons!

Taco Dragons

Matrix Reloaded is one of time's best sequels. Dead Man's Chest is a great sequel but it took At World's End to bring that extra bit of context and make it great because I remember being disappointed the first time I watched Pirates 2. The Dark Knight was a fantastic sequel. Transformers 2. Terminator 2. I would argue that most people haven't even seen the first one which, was more slasher in nature. The second one completely shifted the tone of the entire series going forward. It's a masterpiece. It's harder to find a prequel that works. Like Harry Potter. Characters had so much depth in the books that the movies barely scratched the surface of anyways, that moving to a movie only platform because she wanted the money just hurts it all entirely.

Sarah

Thank you for the HRR shoutout “Prequels can still get you pregnant” at the end! 🤣

Taco Dragons

One of my favorite writers, Ellen Hopkins, wasn't h known for s doing sequels for r the longest. But there was a book of hers, Burned, that gets left on a cliff hanger. The main character has essentially lost everything and is sitting on the highway with a gun in hand, weighing her options as the book closes. It was the ultimate ending. Fans joined her to write a sequel and she finally did. I've yet to read it. The fun sad in not knowing what happened next. In this ultimate cliff hanger. Anyways, some stuff just needs left alone.

Platawan

Look, not to make Anthony uncomfortable, but the stuff about Borderlands 2 is right. The series went to shit after Anthony left.

Ashley Akers

FREDDIE DROP THE TIKTOK LINKS

Ian, not Ian.

HAHAHAHAHA Anthony's very quiet "math bath" 18:02

Tyler Lee

Hearing Matt talk about Red Rising was awesome. I’m currently doing a re-read of the first series after binging all three books in ~2016 when golden son came out. I’ve never read the second series but they’re sitting on my shelf, taunting me. Can’t wait to get into it!

The Pissler

Matt’s friend’s family is the “Fidel took my slave plantation” meme lmao

Jeffrey Gros

Boys I fucking love the Protomen. I grinned so hard when Will brought up Act II.

Patrick O'Hare

Are we still supposed to post listener questions here for the next Talking Dads?

Jaclyn T

The Dragon Prince and She-Ra on Netflix are great animated shows with queer representation that's really well done

Evolved Unicorn

If you all were to start a band where Anthony and Matt faked their instruments, maybe call it Willie Vanilli. 😁This would give homage to both Willie and Anthony’s…. “musical” skills 😏

Caleb

My all time favorite quote is from Matt during the Fort Knight tournament when they're talking about what they could build, and Ron says "We could build a bridge!" And Matt just says deadpan, "To where, Ron?"

Justin

I know Anthony hates this but honestly BL2 actually set the bar because each game afterwards hasn’t been able to reach that level of quality and fun. Just had to say it Anthony sorry.

Matthew Arnold

Matt here - the second series is great. But its very different, and interrogates the morality and conclusions of the first. The first book is also surprisingly a lot of "set up" which is different from how fast paced the original trilogy is. But the second may be the most intense book of all of them, and probably my favorite. Also, now its a quadrilogy, with the 3rd book coming out early next year. Brown said he more or less scrapped his entire ending during the pandemic/2020 election. So I am very curious where he is going with the series.

Tyler Lee

I’m very hyped! I’ve been seeing updates for the last ~6 years on the red rising subreddit (between its frequent fan cast posts) so I’ve got a rough idea of how the first two books of the second series play out. I’ve heard a lot about a Lysander perspective and I’m really excited. The downside (silver lining upside?) of having read the original series over the span of a weekend during a depression episode is i didn’t remember anything after the iron rain in golden son. Just got to the climax of the Quicksilver but in Morning Star, and man these books just blow me away. Side note, there’s a guide on the red rising subreddit for a Society TTRPG. One shot?

Lauren Boersma

I truely believe every queer person had a crush on Lee Pace at some point

Mateo Paradis

The only thing I have to say………RAWKMAYN!!!!!

Kenna

To add to anthonys points about the dramatic irony of prequels working for them rather than against, i think thats part of what made tcw cartoon and ahsokas arc so good

Jill Klatt

That background song? They knew what they were doing 😏

Matthew Cagle

Line from the show stuck in my head Matt: Wait, what did you say Freddie? ... You said I'm a? ... Oh, EYE MUFFS! Anthony: That's the last thing you say before he does it.

Doe

I gotta agree with Freddy on the Hatsune Miku thing xD I absolutely lost my shit when he said it, and the way he said it it was 👌👌👌

Serpentine

...wholesomely hot masculinity? He's so encouraging.

Serpentine

Light'n'fluffy YA fantasy with queer rep recommendation: Tamora Pierce's work, especially later books. She wanted a same-sex relationship right from the start but was overruled by her publisher/editor (it's still definitely there in subtext), and in retrospect has said that if she'd known about nonbinary people her first protagonist would have been one (not in an "oh yeah that character is totally gay even though I never mention it in-book, aren't I great and progressive" way, but in a "dang, that makes sense. I wish I'd known that was a thing so I could have written it in properly" way). And since then she's been increasingly consciously including female, racial, queer and class diversity in her stories, and diversity of personalities within them. Not sure whether it's specifically "LGBT media" but she's putting in the effort to add to representation. And she irl explicitly says BLM and trans rights ✌

Ferrin93

As a cisgender man, Lark and Rosethorn are still my couple goals 😂 and Kel (almost verbatim) says “It’s chill to be queer” in Protector of the Small! (Just to second everything in this lovely post)

Lisa

I want nothing more than the Scorpion slut album

Molly Keyes

If you are interested in queer romance, I highly recommend giving the FMK Lit podcast a listen. They read two romance novels on a theme, a straight one and a queer one, and play fuck, marry, kill with the characters. It's a great way to start diving into some LGBTQ+ literature.

Unsalted Pasta Water

The Black Parade opening was made even better when I realized that the intro with Ron's conference call has The Black parade on a re-listen. It's the family song

Matt Downey

WE NEED THE TIKTOK LINKS

Liz York

The Star Wars prequels and especially the Clone Wars cartoon are interesting to me because they show the Jedi Order in more shades of grey: making flawed decisions, having an unclear role in the war/galaxy, etc.

Breanna Nelson

The intro for this episode was just so damn good!

Cry

This teen talk LGBT talk is way to intense for an closet pan like me

Sam Graine

I don’t know how I didn’t know Anthony was Bi, but for some reason this little lgbt segment makes me really happy, I love the representation in this podcast!

Margo Rubero

Not my favorite podcast crew getting hella queer this week in the teen talk. So pumped for these recs. Need more lgbtq+ recc me daddy’s from Anthony in my life living for this representation

Ethan Secrettie

Speaking on the sequels and good dramas, I know it’s not a sequel but you all should check out white lotus on HBO max it is very good

Hez

the way my head whipped up when will, my podcaster fave, said 'matt berry', my one true love, nearly gave me whiplash

Hez

Also my queer recommendation is The Locked Tomb series. Scary would absolutely read them.

Ari~ aka kitsunefleur

"how are you not sending it to that one out bi guy" i fucking love this 🤣🤣💕 also highly recommended Queer Eye, and Pose on Hulu

LOLliepops_rox

I know the real reason Jimmy threw a rock at Freddie, Cain instinct

Jack Hill

Anthony would love to hear you talk about writing for god of war in a future teen talk! Great episode guys

ronny

Will's question about getting lines from the show stuck in your head, is ironic because the two of mine are both from Henry (with a Ron cameo). "Sparrow, how would you like it if someone ripped off your skin without consent?" and the "AUCTIONED???? A WEEK?" "how much?" are both things that are constantly bouncing around my empty brain cavity.

Chubbums

Anthony sounded rather Handsome this episode.

AllyEnBee

I am so here for rants and recommendations

Happy_Jack

Shout out to Will for introducing me to Act II The Father of Death…been missing out.

Sunny G.

The thing that I think of all the time is from an episode of talking dad's, Anthony says, "I was at the Ritz-Carlton and I'm from Arizona which is the opposite of the Ritz-Carlton." Probably about once a week and I have never been to either place so I don't know why it's stuck with me

Savvy Jewel

Appreciate the shout out to Yakuza 0!! I love that series and that is my fave game!

Adrien

Freddie is right tho because literally when he said, “Nani? Nani???? Hatsune Miku???” I LITERALLY ALMOST PISSED MYSELF LAUGHING I HAD TO PAUSE AND LITERALLY DOUBLED OVER LAUGHING AND HAD TO GIVE MYSELF LIKE 5 MIN TO CALM DOWN

Sophie B Grapplin

I love how sassy Normal was in this ep. Also how Erin was like "Your dad liked to get the last word in too" now i just want sassy Sparrow

Theo Davis

well. since we're rec'ing lgbtq shows. if you've ever played yakuza or watched a heroic bloodshed action movie and thought "all these homoerotic gunfights are cool but i think the mobsters should also have gay sex" well friend! consider watching kinnporsche. it's a thai action romance drama and frankly nothing i could say about it would prepare you for how gay and insane it is. good luck.

Travon Everett

Nobody said sense 8 on Netflix for a show and it kinda surprises me lol

G-Rider

Love that they have read the Red Rising series, really big fan!
