Matt and Beth put the "Christ" back in "Christmas" as they discuss Journey to Bethlehem (2023).

Matt and Beth put the "Christ" back in "Christmas" as they discuss the brand new feature film Journey to Bethlehem (2023), a musical(!) rendition of the nativity story. They discuss the bops and jams, Antonio Bandares'... acting choices, and finally, if this film belongs in The Christerion Collection!

Can’t believe we got blessed with this and Beth May’s one woman show recording in the same day.

Jacuzzi Jesus

Mery crisis can't wait to make my partner listen to this while we drive home lol

Chris Wade

This is a great present guys 😍

lazo

HAPPY HONDA DAYS!!!!

Rebecca

Happy Honda Days! Thank you for this excellent gift. I can't stop relistening to the previous two episodes of the Christerion Collection!

Elly Wade

A Honda days miracle 🥹

Springle Me To Springletown

Fun fact, Sing Street was produced into a Broadway musical in February 2020. Sadly, Covid kicked out pretty much every musical that year

Terra Minuit

As someone who was never religious, these are always fascinating. But God, Beth, the left field blindside with Repo. Just an utter slam back into my early twenties.

Rebecca D

The only musical of that story?! Um, isn't Langston Hughes "Black Nativity" that story?

kayce webber

Check out ac/bc: a rock opera

Cameron S

Idk if it still is showing at all but I got to see it in Boston last year! Was a good time

Katilynn Morgan

Hell yeah! Give that Repo: The Genetic Opera recommendation! Listen to one of the songs and that's all you need to convince you to watch the whole movie. 10/10 underrated film.

MechanizedMan

Idk if it exactly fits this series. But I was wondering if you guys could do an episode of Silence by Martin Scorsese. It's not exactly the most 'christian' movie. Alot of Christians don't like the movie. Especially Catholics but it might be the best most thought provoking "Christian" movie. Very real and raw.

DungeonBrat

This is the first of these I haven't seen! I'm absolutely loving this series, and it's healing my religious trauma lmao PLEASE keep these up!!!

Andrew

I’m so curious about you opinions on the 10 commandments and the prince of Egypt

Luna Puma Skooma Tooma

Great news, there's a little musical about the life of Christ called "Free Ride," which features all sorts of classic rock artists, from The Beatles to Queen, from Bon Jovi, to Randy Newman. Fun fact: I participated in said musical a few times for a local church.

Broden Orr

I've never seen the movie, but your description really reminds me of a musical my family would do semi annually called 'rock nativity' and ironically it runs into many of the same issues this movie does.. I wonder if they're related somehow

Paul Barden

I never comment but I just wanna say keep making these please

Josie Herbert

Christerion Collection is my favorite movie discussion podcast I’ve ever heard! Please make more of these, I get so excited whenever you drop a new one. Christian films are FASCINATING and I love hearing peoples thoughts on why they are the way that they are. You both are so funny and have such valuable insights!

Chrys

I love Repo and hope everyone watches it over these but great job!

Andrea Cassidy

Does “The Little Drummer Boy” count as a musical about the nativity story?

Patrick Sochacki

Happy Honda Days! Please turn this into it's own show!!

SweezBeez

I hope y'all go over The Prince of Egypt in this series. I really love that movie and I think it's an excellent musical and story.

ParticularPikmin

This is my comfort series ☺️can't wait for the next one

Mourner

Seconding all of the people saying prince of Egypt! The songs are incredible

Angelica Schovan

I would back a Patreon just for more of these. This is providing me so much catharsis.

Dusti Nalley

Its not a movie, but a book. Have either of you read Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's childhood pal by Christopher Moore? It's hilarious and seems up your alley!

Rebel#7

I adore this podcast. You guys have great chemistry and you masterfully balance respect for christians and no-bullshit analysis of their movies. I wish I had access to it on my Pocket Casts apps because I'm here for it!!

Dylan Miles

It’s shocking how healing this podcast is as someone with a biblical amount of religious trauma. I hope we get many many more of these!!!

Nora Hopeless

So happy for another ep of this! I will say, this movie is a lot better to experience when your Christian background is NOT Catholic. It's very much a protestant retelling of the nativity.

Jordan Tompkins

Lmfao at “I’m pregnant…. With emotion”

Megan Shively

this collection heals my inner child catholic with the dumbest jokes on the planet and an intellectual movie review

Lucas Sekal

I like this series a lot...please keep going

Bridget Kelly

When will they be doing Saved! is my biggest question

Springle Me To Springletown

I keep hearing about this show called The Chosen. It’s basically the gospel told in episodic series with a high budget HBO drama style. Never seen it, don’t want to see it, but I only hear good things (from my heavily catholic family). It’s on its fourth season. Maybe for a variety episode?

Peter MP

You guys had me listening to the soundtrack and all I could hear is Imagine Dragons lol. Love getting lessons on Christianity and Christianity in media. So insightful. Hope you guys cover the powerhouse that is Prince of Egypt!

Pocky Princezz

I need an episode of veggie tales like lord of the beans Jonah and Pirates who don't do anything

kiarra burd

one of the best animated films ever with an absolute banger soundtrack! seconding this great idea

Mia Davis

As a recovering Catholic (now athiest) who still loves to have conversations about religion, this is everything I have ever wanted in a podcast!! Keep it up!

Kaylin Creason

Love this, Beth and Matt! Keep going!

Kaylin Creason

I also really love the new sign off! That was something I liked from church too, and I think it keeps in the spirit (heh) of the podcast

Chris Hutton

I know it's not a movie so it may not fly but I would love an episode of this where Matt and Beth watch a little bit of Veggie Tales, because I think it's the best and most successful overt Christian media. It was genuinely good even as a secular kid, rather than a lot of stuff that is just About Christianity

NaterTot

They did have a feature length film in "the pirates that don't do anything" that bankrupted their studio, though I think one of the original episode or "Lord of the beans" would be much more fun

Anville

Would it be possible to just react to like Skillet albums lmao, I feel like getting special guest Freddy could work somehow

xatlern

Any conversation about Jesus having siblings just makes me think of Dogma, which I love, but I think that movie has the exact opposite energy of what you're trying to bring here 😂

Quentin's Corner

I don't believe this is part of monthly and indeterminant content and I'm fine with that. Didn't expect to like these episodes as much as I did, but me and my wife like them.

Otterly_Sleepy

Please please please do “left behind” with nick cage. It’s such an insane film that my mom forced to to go to the theaters to see and I need both of your thoughts

Robbie Taylor

Time for another request! Could y’all please do the LDS movie “Best 2 Years” it’s about a nerdy devoted Mormon guy going on his mission, being teamed up with someone who’s disillusioned and they both change for the better. (It’s better/worse than it sounds)

Jesse Barbour

Thank God for the miracle that is this Patreon content

flufflepuffhufflepuffstuff

Oo I'm not quite through this episode but legit one of the only biblical movies I still watch is the dreamworks Prince of Egypt. Prince of Egypt SLAPS. And the whole soundtrack is just *chef kiss** I'd love to hear yall's take on that one

Natsuka

I'm also a recovering Catholic. I've spent easily dozens of hours (so, nothing compared to a legit scholar, but still kind of a lot) studying the origins of Christianity. It's fascinating tracing back the origins of all the different myths. There was a ubiquitous Greek translation of the Hebrew bible, known as the Septuagint, that we know the gospel of Matthew was relying on as their Judaism sourcebook. Matthew quotes a mistranslation in the Septuagint of a prophecy from Isaiah. The sloppy translation to Greek refers to a child being born to a virgin, when the correct translation would be just a young woman who produced a child in the conventional way. AND THAT'S WHY PEOPLE CREATED THE STORY OF THE VIRGIN BIRTH. One of the most popular myths of one of the most popular religions on the planet WAS BASED ON A BAD LOCALIZATION

Gibbi

Joel Smallbone is part of an Australian Christian band. The band is called For King and Country. And while I am no longer christian For King and country is a pretty nice band (unless they have said anything bad that I dont know lol)

Peachy

Bring back more episodes this was so good all three eps. Amazing

Shannon

“Jesus Christ Superstar “ (original and remake) is another wild Christian musical.

Danie Leigh

Repo the genetic opera definitely also my second favourite musical film and sooo underrated 😂

Kennedy Quick

Continuing with the musical theme, I think they should go through “Prince of Egypt”

Ro Faulkner

I love Milo Manheim but this was a choice

Three Kobolds in a Trenchcoat

So, I know this is an older post, but listening to this, it made me and my partner really want you guys to watch The First Temptation of Christ — especially talking about Joseph’s perspective! It’s a Brazilian movie that is a loving spoof of the story of Jesus. Hot silver fox God is trying to win Mary back from an adorably pathetic Joseph and Jesus comes back from the 40 days in the desert with his new gay bff, and it’s Jesus’s 30th birthday. It’s only like 45mins and and had the unexpectedly most anime ending ever.

Montanna Tilton

I loved Matt's new sign off in this episode! I was listening to this on my commute and when the episode ended I still had a ways to go, so I flipped on the radio just in time to catch an NPR discussion on Christian nationalism 🙃 total whiplash lol

Pamphleteer

Just wanted to jump in and mention that Antipater isn't mentioned in the Bible but is an historical figure and the son of Herod.

Pamphleteer

There is a really good podcast called Tribulation Farce that does a deep dive into the book series the Nic Cage movie was based on

HipHop Jazz

I remember watching this in cinemas for my dad's birthday and we were the only people in the entire theatre 💀 We had fun taking digs at it throughout tho

Kaytu

Im not Christian, but this made me had to check out Journey to Bethlehem and honestly- yea its got some bangers haha also Milo?!
