Previous Chapter

The War Party’s takeover of imperial institutions was swift and brutal.

Hundreds of arrests followed the summons issued to every important official to Frightwall, and neither Euphemia nor Mastemo dared to oppose them. Elven conspirators, Cobweb agents, and other disloyal elements were promptly brought to Frightwall’s cells for detainment and interrogation. Threats were sent to the Malphas sisters and their husbands, with the bonus of having Louis’ strength to back them up. Odette Kano was recalled to serve as the new Lord-Treasurer and Merchant—since Simon had already confirmed she would make an excellent replacement in a previous reign and she had made much progress locating the lost city of Rhapta for her expedition—while Duchar, Cassandra, and Hector would accompany Dassein’s delegation. They would also bring him a most useful gift with them as well.

Euphemia’s investigation naturally corroborated Simon’s own ‘findings,’ and a plan was immediately set into motion to destroy the Attic: forcefully binding a fetch to a demon so it would open the doors, and then flooding it with a flock of exploding goat martyrs. Valravn’s little pocket dimension swiftly collapsed on itself, as it did many times before, and the imperial issues bounties on most Weavers. Only Voltobauta was spared from the manhunt.

“I must say I’m surprised by your speed and effectiveness, Simon,” Lauriane commented when she and Shabram provided him with a report ahead of the High Council meeting. “But still… What do you need so many goats and cows for? Are you planning to expand the castle’s menagerie?”

“An elite guard of demon-possessed cows and goats will strike fear into our enemies’ hearts.” His quadrupedal followers had yet to fail him in any capacity. “You think I would have better results with other animals?”

“I will introduce you to our warbeast program in time,” Lauriane replied calmly. “I can’t argue with your results. It’s like you prepared for your ascendancy for years.”

I have. “We simply make a good team, sister, though I can’t deny some mistakes were made,” Simon complained as he read through the report. “So there was a flying pyramid buried in Navarre.”

“Our scouts and geomancers saw it take off as soon as they began excavation,” Shabram confirmed. “Local airships were shot down trying to intercept it over the coast. Our seers believe it will flee over the open ocean, and then make its way towards Muse.”

We botched the timing. Simon’s suspicion had proved correct, the flying pyramid that attacked him in the previous reign was Chrom Cruak’s lair in Navarre, and he wasn’t afraid to move it at the first sign of discovery. Since it is operational as soon as my reign begins, infiltration is the only way to seize it.

“It has to be a pre-Doom device,” Lauriane said with a frown. “I will send more researchers to investigate the area. There must be more hidden under the desert.”

“Probably,” Simon conceded. “Has Louis returned from Magvolia yet?”

“He has,” Shabram confirmed. “Duke Flauros and Duchess Eligos folded without a fight.”

Excellent. Duke Flauros had caused him some issues when Simon allied with Euphemia to protect his elven wife, but he had been a War Party supporter and the sight of Louis knocking on his door quickly showed him the folly of resisting arrest. As for Justine, she always submitted to friendly terms that let her preserve her niece’s life and her own luxurious lifestyle.

Supporters of the Church Party might prove a little more difficult to handle, but a mix of assurances that they would keep their power if they bent the knee and would find themselves on public enemy lists if they didn’t should force them into line.

The door to the High Council chamber opened, and multiple people walked through. Louis strode inside like a conqueror with Dassein in tow, while Euphemia and Mastemo appeared a lot more subdued. Odette Kano, as the newcomer, kept to herself and sat next to Shabram and an ever-quiet Belzemine.

Finally, Maublanc walked in with his daughter. Although the Commander looked as stern as ever, Simon did catch a glint of excitement in his gaze; as for Anna, she glanced at Simon’s Overlord armor with a wary gaze.

You don’t have to be afraid, Anna. You’re safe now. Simon had ensured no Maiden nor spiders would ever put their claws on her this reign, and he would not repeat the mistakes that led to their falling out at the Academy. This time, I’ll make you happy.

“Uncle, Anna,” Simon greeted them. He noticed his former lover tensed a bit upon hearing his voice come out of the armor. “I pray you had a safe flight.”

“It was fine… and unexpected.” Anna studied Simon’s new third eye on his Overlord helmet. “That’s new, and very creepy.”

“We came as swiftly as we could, considering the situation.” Maublanc nodded at the Magnos family. “My condolences to you all.”

Louis didn’t even bother to pretend. “Keep them for better people, Uncle. I doubt our father would have mourned you.”

“Louis, enough of that,” Lauriane chastised him. She and Maublanc were the only people at the table to miss their father, and Simon doubted that would last once she found her mother’s bones.

Euphemia squinted at Anna, and then at Maublanc. “Why bring your daughter here?”

Maublanc avoided her gaze and locked eyes with Simon. “I thought she should have a seat at the council, considering His Majesty’s proposition.”

“Of course.” Simon pointed at the seat to his left. “Anna, come here.”

Though it was a great honor, Anna obeyed without much enthusiasm. Simon guessed it was a lot to take in all at once, and he decided not to put the spotlight on her during this meeting out of respect.

They had many other subjects to address anyway.

“Welcome, lords and ladies, to this administration’s first High Council session.” It was smaller than the one that began Simon’s rule with Euphemia, since Louis remained as marshal, but it suited him just fine. “As you’ve all been informed, my father was slain in his bed by Illusean agents with the help of the criminal Cobweb conspiracy; this includes our own Lord-Treasurer, whom Lady Odette Kano will now replace for the time being. I have thankfully inherited the Overlord Class and confidential information to better steer the empire on the right path.”

“I still struggle to believe our father perished,” Dassein admitted. “I always distrusted Patriate, but to think he was an elf in disguise…”

“He deceived us all, as did his sisters,” Euphemia stated. “Malphas confessed to smuggling the weapon used to commit the crime, and we’ve found multiple portals of demonic origin inside the castle as well. This conspiracy might have been behind a few previously unresolved crimes.”

“A suspicious amount of conspirators came from the War Party,” Mastemo noted, his mirror-mask pointing straight at Louis. “Were you truly unaware of the plot on His Majesty’s life, Your Highness?”

“Be assured I will clean my own house, priest, starting with Duke Flauros.” Louis smiled at Anna. “We will find a better party for your handmaiden, Anna.”

“That’s… good,” Anna replied, clearing her throat. “What is going to happen to them?”

“Some heads must roll,” Lauriane suggested. “We cannot let kingslaying go unpunished, or it will invite more attacks on Simon’s life.”

She didn’t argue for Louis’ execution when he was accused, but Simon didn’t hold it against his sister. He kept his mouth shut for now and looked at Louis, waiting to see how he acted in the political arena.

“As far as I can tell, Malphas’ sisters are mostly guilty of hiding their elven origins when it comes to our father’s death,” Louis said. “However, I am convinced they plotted to stage an attack on the Goetia Research Facility in the near future.”

Simon remained silent while Lauriane asked, “How so?”

“They purchased lands situated around it and gathered extensive retinues. My guess is that they hoped to use it as a staging ground for a western invasion and cripple our Crestone production once the time was right.” Louis was as sharp as always. “Should interrogations confirm my suspicions, then we should exterminate them and redistribute their lands to more deserving hands.”

“No,” Simon decided, to everyone’s surprise. “I have foreseen that Lady Eligos can be turned to our side, so long as we spare her sister and niece.”

Lauriane frowned. “She would betray the Oracle?”

“As I told you earlier, the White Unicorn is divided on her leadership, and Lady Eligos has taken a liking to the lifestyle our empire can offer her. I am less certain about House Flauros, but they will be more useful to us alive than dead.”

Louis smiled at him. “You should be tougher on traitors and would-be kingslayers, brother.”

That man’s sheer moxie was unbelievable. “They will be stripped of their titles, and their lands will be redistributed to more deserving inheritors,” Simon decided as he ordered Shabram to distribute some files. “With the conspiracy dismantled, we now have four great threats to deal with: Gargauth’s heirs, Illusea and its Oracle, the Cobweb, and the Zodiac Fiends that will bring about the Second Doom. Eradicating them will be our top priority.”

“On the matter of the Oracle, we have confirmed that Your Majesty’s Anathemic Secrecy Perk does extend to Lady Firewand now that she has joined your Party System,” Shabram said, much to the shock of the assembly. “She is impervious to all forms of divination available to us.”

“That is a game-changer,” Lauriane said with cautious enthusiasm. “We had to rely on extensive countermeasures to merely limit the reach of the Oracle’s divinations before. Extending it to our highest officials will let us act in ways Illusea cannot expect.”

Louis remained wary. “I do wonder why our father never made use of this ability on us.”

“He might have, just not for us,” Euphemia replied dryly. “He didn’t want us to overshadow and risk challenging him.”

“A Class’ Perks can change to match the people’s wishes and perception,” Mastemo argued. “His Majesty’s version of the Overlord Class might differ from his late predecessor.”

“Regardless, I only have five Party spots and I must keep one for Firewand since she is a valuable hostage,” Simon informed his council.

Belzemine raised her head. “Me, Your Majesty?”

“I do not fully understand why yet, but you are extremely valuable as a hostage against the Oracle, which is why my predecessors kept you around.”

“Malphas was planning to abduct her prior to their planned bombardment of Frightwall,” Euphemia added, squinting at Belzemine. “She must be related by blood to the Oracle in some way.”

“Either way, we can decide who will benefit from my Anathemic Secrecy’s protection later,” Simon said upon changing the subject. “Let us return to the matter at hand: how to deal with our many foes.”

The High Council’s reactions to the files didn’t differ much from the last time he introduced them: disbelief, shock at the presence of a lich and demon buried under Castle Carcass—Anna looked especially rattled—and confusion about how to use the empire’s resources to best deal with them.

However, Louis’ presence did shake things up when he offered a novel solution to their many problems.

“Seems straightforward to me,” he said with absolute confidence and a sinister kind of enthusiasm. “We kill them all.”

Of course he would say that, Simon thought before replying, “It is not so simple, brother.”

“It could be.” Louis set the file aside. “From what I gather, the hierarchy of threats goes this way: Gargauth’s spawn in Telluria, the Cobweb, Illusea and its allies, and finally those Zodiac Fiends. I say we slaughter them in this exact order, so we gather enough experience to deal with the next one on the list.”

“You understand nothing, you madman,” Euphemia snapped at him. “I have seen the scale of the devastation this Black Comet will bring in my visions. It will tear this land apart.”

“Moreover, as much as I support securing our hemisphere, destroying the Cobweb and Illusea will force us to invade the western continent and Illusea,” Maublanc added. “We can only look forward to a devastating war. Thousands will die, if not millions.”

“But those that survive will reach untold heights,” Louis argued. “Our soldiers will test themselves against the enemy and grow in levels. One level sixty fighter will be worth a regiment of unclassed soldiers.”

“The empire can barely muster the numbers and resources to keep the territories it already has,” Mastemo pointed out. “We cannot afford another war.”

“We can and we will, once we draft tribes like the shifters into our ranks and cancel pointless projects like this Operation Deepground.” The words dripped with disdain in Louis’ mouth. “My father’s plot is well and good, but it assumes we will lose. We won’t have any need for bunkers if we win.”

Dassein crossed his arms. “It’s not numbers or vaults we need, brother, but the Noble Classes. We must gather the remaining Noble Crestones we still lack to defeat the Fiends, starting with the Beast.”

“True,” Simon conceded. His own experience with the Sanctuary and other battles had taught him low-level fighters were little more than dead weight when fighting truly fearsome opponents. He needed to gather the Noble Heroes again to prevail against the Parade.

Louis’ plan was incredibly brutal and ruthless, but it made a twisted amount of sense. His own level had skyrocketed through the civil war, and no doubt Simon could push his family to new heights by increasing their experience yields. A war against Illusea might let them purchase the strength they needed with elven blood.

Or… or they would take losses, and Simon might find himself with fewer high level Noble Class users to throw at the empowered Zodiac Fiends. War was like opening a door into a dark room. Anything could happen. People like Alcyone and Voltobauta were unlikely to entertain an alliance with Endymion either should their airships besiege their homelands or allies.

But then again, the Oracle had made it clear she wouldn’t settle for peace, so such a conflict might be inevitable either way…

Euphemia glared at him. “Don’t tell me you are entertaining going through with this insanity.”

“I must consider all options,” Simon decided. He at least leaned against cancelling Operation Deepground since he had no idea what some of the empowered Zodiac Fiends could do.

Asterion had managed to strike at Abraxas from the ground, Shin-Drazil flooded the continent, and Exodeos reduced entire parts of the world to nothingness. They might cause quite a bit of damage to Brimir even assuming Endymion could defeat them within days of their emergence, and the comet’s return would inflict great damage to the land either way.

“For now, we will secure our borders and gather all Zodiac Fiend crystals within our reach,” Simon ordered. “Euphemia, Dassein, Maublanc, you will deal with Vouivre Ashmodai, capture her brother Casval, recover the Chest of Worlds, and secure the old kish capital so we can extract its crystal in due time. I will provide a kish helper to open the vault.”

Simon was confident he had gained sufficient power to tackle Vouivre, but he preferred to avoid personally confronting her for a few reasons. First, he was unsure he could prevail alone, and splitting the experience was a harsh cost; second, he would only gain levels from killing her once, and Vouivre tended to grow in power quickly over the reigns. He would rather pluck that fruit in a timeline where it reached maturity. Finally, Simon needed more training to optimize his fighting style. He needed to master his existing abilities to fight at his fullest potential.

And he just… he just didn’t feel ready to meet Vouivre directly again. Memories of their previous alliance remained something of a phantom wound, like his time with Anna, Eole, and Cassandra had once caused him distress.

“Of course, that can wait until after your wedding,” Simon said. “We could hold it on the twenty-fourth of Nivose alongside my upcoming coronation.”

Maublanc and Euphemia exchanged a sideways glance. “It would be wiser to wait,” said the former after clearing his throat. “Marrying my blood-brother’s widow so soon after his demise might raise some eyebrows.”

“Agreed,” Euphemia replied without much enthusiasm. She had waited years for this, she could afford to do so a little longer.

That’s not the kind of eagerness I expected. Then again, they were mature adults and the shadow of Balzam Magnos loomed large. Hopefully the anti-Vouivre campaign will help close that gap.

“Besides…” Maublanc’s eyes darted to Simon and Anna. “I would rather not overshadow another, more important union.”

Anna shifted uncomfortably in her seat, with Simon dismissing the subject for now. “We’ll discuss the matter in private later, Uncle.”

This didn’t please Maublanc, but discussions quickly moved on to other matters like finding Algozoa’s crystal in Uyo to arranging a betrothal between Dassein and Satine in order to fragment the White Unicorn’s supporters in Magvolia. It was decided Maublanc, Dassein, Anna, and Lauriane would also join Simon’s Party; the former two to ensure the success of the Tellurian campaign, the latter two to shield them from potential attacks by the Cobweb or Illusea. The likes of Euphemia and Louis simply didn’t trust him yet with their personal stats, which was a shame. The Oracle would no doubt throw a fit should she fail to scry the crown-prince.

Finally, Louis all but demanded they repeal shifter slavery laws in Telluria and instead encourage conscription into the armed forces. “It will be easier to assimilate the region if its people can feel they will become citizens. Their natural aggression will be better directed against our enemies than our forces.”

“Agreed, and I have the perfect person in mind to convince the shifters,” Simon said. The meeting having reached its end, he dismissed almost everyone. “Anna, can you stay with me for a moment?”

His former lover nodded slightly and remained behind once the rest of the councilors exited the room. Simon removed his armor to put her at ease and asked, “How are you holding up?”

“It’s a lot to take in all at once, Simon,” Anna admitted with a sigh, before matching his gaze. “Your change in personality most of all.”

Of course she had noticed. “It’s still me, Anna,” he reassured her in the hope of avoiding a mess like the one in Beleth a few reigns back. “I’m simply more powerful and informed.”

“It’s not just that, Simon. You order the likes of Louis and Euphemia around without any doubt, you can see the future, and you don’t blink when Louis suggests massacring thousands. Your Class has changed you.” She scoffed. “My father told me you’re the one who proposed a match between us too. You would never have been so bold before.”

“True, but is that such a bad thing? Does the prospect of becoming an empress not appeal to you?”

Anna let out a small sigh. “I like you, Simon, but I admit being told I might have to marry you came as quite the shock. I hoped to have a choice in the matter.”

“You do have one,” Simon replied. “I won’t force you to.”

“Really?” Anna raised an eyebrow with clear skepticism. “So if I say I would rather marry Dassein or Thalas rather than sit on your crimson lap, would you agree?”

“Yes, though I’ll say I doubt it would work out with either of them.” This got a chuckle out of her, at least. “It would make things more difficult, but I’m sure I can win over your father some other way.”

Anna looked sad all of a sudden. “So you’re looking to marry my father’s armies, not me.”

“I would rather marry you and your father’s armies.” Simon took her hand and kissed it. “I’m a greedy man.”

“A bold and charming one too.” Anna smiled a little. “But we both know you wouldn’t marry me if I didn’t have a Commander for a father.”

“You’re wrong. I would still have married you if you came from a poor family, because you were one of the few to show me kindness when I had nothing to offer in return.” Simon would always be grateful for that. “But… I’ll admit a lot of things have indeed changed. It’s not just about what I want anymore.”

“You’re the Overlord now,” Anna conceded. “The state will always come first.”

“That doesn’t mean we can’t be happy together.” He stroked her hair, and she allowed him to do so. “You don’t have to give me your answer now. You can still consider your options until we make it official.”

“Antonine or some other upstart will throw me down the stairs to free the way to your bedroom if I do that.”

“Then I can compensate you for your loss,” Simon teased her.

“All on your own?” Anna burst out laughing, a look of mischief in her eyes. “Gaining that Class has done wonders for your confidence, but how can I put it to the test?”

“Very simple.” He summoned a newly crafted amulet necklace from his Inventory and put it around her neck. “Just give me a call, and I will answer it.”

Everything would go swimmingly between them this time around.

A/N: heya everyone, just for information but I'll likely take a week-long break from the 24th of August to the 28th. My mother is getting out of chemo and my family is taking her on a cruise to help her change her mind. I'll put a reminder a week or so beforehand ;)

Thanks for the chapter

Thank goodness the break is only for a week. I thought you’d take the whole month off. My best wishes to your mom Voidy

And with those final words, Simon cursed this entire reign to unprecidented disaster.

JaceNight

Take the time you need

Finteh_can

Thanks for the chapter. I can’t help but see this going badly but the Simon from chapter 1 to here is such a different character in hindsight. Reactions from characters like Anna really bring that into perspective.

Andrew Lechner

“Seems straightforward to me,” he said with absolute confidence and a sinister kind of enthusiasm. “We kill them all.” This will be Simon's perfect solution... When he is level 100. Before then, it will be long, long road to gathering the power necessary to put so many foes in their places in so short a time.

Eos

I really don't like Anna, I really do hope Simon moves on to someone who actually has some form of personality, competence and skill.

ChillyMidNight

Simon wants in on the demon summoning during the girl sleepover, on the demons' side

Girik Khullar

Hail the GOATlord! Our GOAT SIMON!

Akirish

Does Simon have physical third eye or is it just his armor? I had impression that it is not visible by normal people (sinse no one reacted to his sudden third eye and don't think Simon never mentioned it growing) and only seen as dark spot by other visionaries. But in this chapter said that he has 3 eyes in overlord armor.

granndfunk

I don't hate her as much as others seem to, but I am dismayed at how easily she 'sees through him'. Like every time he's excited to see her she ruins his mood. Not to say he doesn't deserve it, but it seems that has been mostly what her character is for so far.

Arctic Ghost

Sorry to hear about your mother. Hope you and your family have a lovely cruise.

HAIL THE OVERGOAT!!!

Bilbo

"Everything would go swimmingly between them this time around." Yeah Oracle is 100% dropping the hammer in this reign, Belzemine or not

BlaqBonez

l pray this is still a multi-romance reign, because l cant stand the Anna romance its so boring

Flufflez

I like Anna and think she has her virtues. Though, it might be best if Simon's relationship with her is platonic in future reigns.

alejandrox

Is it his armor only

Eos

If it was platonic and not romantic and sexual in anyway sure, but I feel like she will get in the way of him becoming more and more ruthless, his empire is a mess and the best way to fix eveything and weather all the coming storms would be to view everyone he doesn't want in his inner-circle and should be in his inner-circle as rescources otherwise unless he gains the ability to steam roll everyone 1vAll it's going to end badly - the amount of "war crimes" he will need to commit to reach his so called good ending would ruin his relationship with her because she doesn't have the stomach to do so and if she can't even see he's dead set on reaching his "paradise" as he environs it she will simply be another problem

Noxx

Balzam: Get this corny shit over with and start fucking already!

At his point, I am hoping Anna goes to the academy, has sex with a whole bunch of people, and decides she doesn’t want to be with Simon. It doesn’t seem like she fits with Simon as the Overlord. Especially with a proposal right after he starts his reign.

Diego Urbina

Thanks for the chapter. Well wishes to your family.

Daniel Pataki

"I feel like she will get in the way of him becoming more and more ruthless" Yeah, that's the best part. I really don't want a Balzam 2.0 or a Louis Reloaded. I want Overlord Simon achieving good things with his bad class, making the world better in the end.

Daedalus

Anna and Eole are my favorites for Simon’s love interest, because they can serve as a moral compass for him.

Marlin

Aside from any personal like or dislike for the character, Anna is currently the worst match for Simon of any love interest. The oddity of Simon’s continued insistence that she’s the holy grail of romances continues to grow with every appearance she makes.

Daedalus

Lots of people are dismayed by what Simon has become - even Laurianne is creeped out by him - but Anna is the only one whose opinion about that matters to Simon, so I’m hopeful she can help be a moral compass for him this Reign and help steer him back to a good route.

blabidy blab

She has the strongest personality of any love interest so far...? That's, like, exactly why she's at all able to prevent him from becoming more ruthless. Sounds more like you just plain don't like she has less flexible morals, which is fine and all but at least say it like it is. ... well, I guess she doesn't have the strongest personality if you count Norbelle as a love interest lol.

blabidy blab

I mean, it's important to have characters like those, even if she can be overly headstrong about it.

JJ

That is very kind of you and your family. Your mom has an amazing support system. It’s still a ways away, but I hope you all enjoy the build up to the cruise date :)

David Giles

The problem is that other than Laurienne she's the only other person on the planet who actually gave a shit about him enough to know him and that means she's also the only one to notice how changed he is.

Doofenshmirtz

Ngl, I think Anna, Remedia but only kinda, and yes, Euphemia should be the main 'romance'. I don't hate Anna as much as everyone else seems to but at this point of the story, none of the romances are really jibing with me. I think it would be cool for the romances to just slowly fade away as Simon starts seeing everyone more as strategic resources for the growing Overlord. I feel this could have gone a different direction if the sky island arc went differently, but as of now I'm pushing for killing the romance. Were already seeing this with Anna, where Simon can still flirt and mess around, but the priority is now keeping Maublanc around and this feels like a pretty natural progression. And since Maublanc is such an important resource, Anna therefore ends up at the forefront. Remedia is the mage so we need her for magic though Id be fine seeing her being pushed into a secondary role instead of a romance since it doesn't really require it, and Euphemia is empress so she'll certainly get pushed forward for certain reigns regardless.

asa..lollipop

Wow that author's note just opened my eyes to the fact that voidy is a real life person other than the peddler that delivers my drugs every so often. It just yanked me out of the immersion his stories usually put me in and has got me thinking on my own issues. I've got some shit to work out. Well wishes Voidy

"Why don't you go sleep around, Anna. See if that makes you less anxious about becoming an empress." Void!! Ewwwww!! Brother ewwwwww!! From the comments, I see I'm far from alone in disliking Anna. But Simon is starting to catch that dislike. I just lost most of my respect for him as a man.

Void Herald

I... I don't get it? Like it was supposed to convey Anna is free to consider her options until they become official. Rewrote things to make that clearer.

I pray that everything goes well with your mom man. That’s tough. I’ve had family go through that and it is rough. Stay positive!

Has 100 been confirmed as the level cap? I feel like it is but don't remember it being stated directly.

Eos

I don't dislike Anna she just has nothing going for her and her personality is bad and there's no basis for Simons feelings for her (the Arch was literally just sex and that was near the start of the Reigns) its nkt dislike its apathy shes useless and annoying like a fly or a mosquito purposeless and just an irritant that distacts you and with her being a massive liabilty as the perfect vessel for helel she just keeps becoming more and more of an obstacle and baggage, plus her fathers wishes will never be achieved because the inheritance is pointing towards being murdered by his kids and the one that kills him the most as the inheritor if anything her lineage is problematic, Euphemina, Remedia and Voivire are the best and a multi-romance with all three of them would be most optimal, Remedia is extreme versatile and helpful and she has the most genuine personality, Euphemina is extremely beneficial and can help fix up Thalas (him and Anna would work well if anything as shown and that would also secure mablanc if he loses his delusions of having his blooodline on the throne, Anna also isnt ruler material if anything she shouldnt even be on the council at the end of the day everything is routed in her father wanting his lineage to rule not her) and Voivire if she can be converted comes with her brother and make her the Beast Creststone holder and have her brother join maybe even develop Drassien as his rider that would be overwhelming. Pragmatically and pursuing efficency Euphemina, Remedia and Voivire are the best Anna has nothing going for her and Eole is simply delusional and her people are baggage, at most getting the adventurer and necromancer would allow her to help but a romantic relationship both emotionally stunts Simon and he needs to gain dominion over his powers as the Misamic God. Note: Please understand what Ruthlessness is, it's mercy allowing him to achieve his Utopia by removing all obstacles and he needs more of it because it's not the absence of compassion of Empathy it's choosing not to because it's detrimental, apathy and madness would be detrimental - if anything he should simply nuke the Elves out of existence but it would be best not to because realistically he needs to kill the Oracle and the Lich, but assimilate the rest so that he's on good with the white unicorn, get the Paladin with the princess and make him an aide, subordinate or something like night Commander especially if they use the experience buff against the Oracle he can quickly become as strong as Simon. Also sorry for whoever this replies to this is pretty much my answer to everyone.

Eos

Balzam wasn't ruthless though he simply lacked or didn't care for the capability to be compassionate or want a better world like the other prior Overlords, he a piece of trash, please understand what ruthless actually is because Balzam isn't he's just scum a bug difference; this is also shown as you understand him, he was a rapist and obsessive and wanted everything beneath him even if it's ashes he wants pure submission and absolute fear, not being ruthless because he would know when to be merciful because it's beneficial he isn't.

mhaj58

Everything would go swimmingly between them this time around. Voidys a tease, using those words

I don't see why to be honest, she betrayed him in Vouivre arc because he hid himself causing a huge misunderstanding, in Lux Vult she liked him a lot. Even more, with social pressure,(something she accept as she literally said so to Simon once) i expect her justify his changes without any problems.

Randoudo

I think i understand why people hate the Anna Romance route... she is just his childhood friend. They must compare her to her rivals lol, well they are not wrong for a story it's more fun to read about: 2 MILFs nobles classes powerhouses, a half-demon (succubi), a dragon , (his sister(s)????), and Eole.

Mirian

I am convinced we will find out something new about Anna this time too. I don't see why people here don't like her.

Let's not be insulting and jump to unflattering conclusions. I dug somewhat, trying to see what my instincts were shouting at me, and I think I managed to word it decently: The MC's whole story is about transformation through suffering. He starts as someone with the instincts of a heroic person, but the world forces him through repeated failures, deaths, compromises, and atrocities until he becomes something harder. The tragedy (or appeal) is that he doesn't just gain power — he accumulates weight. His presence changes because he carries things ordinary people cannot understand. So when he approaches Anna, the tension is interesting: she remembers the young man he was, but she senses the ruler/monster he has become. That's actually a compelling conflict. The question becomes: Can someone who has become terrifying still be loved by someone who knew them before? Where my reaction seems to come in is that the story then has him respond to her hesitation by essentially lowering himself to compete with her previous romantic life. The line bothers me because it doesn't read like a powerful, wounded ruler saying: "You are free to choose. I will not force you into a marriage you do not want. But understand that I am offering you something rare, and I will not beg for it." It reads more like: "I know I'm damaged goods. Go have your fun with other men and maybe come back if you've decided I'm preferable." And that creates a perceived inversion of status. The MC has spent lifetimes becoming someone who can stand against extinction-level threats. He has sacrificed parts of his humanity to protect a world that would probably hate him if it knew the full extent of what he had done. Then, in the most intimate relationship of his life, he doesn't present himself as a man with difficult baggage who deserves careful consideration. He presents himself almost as one option on a dating marketplace, competing against hypothetical university flings. That's the part that bothered me. Not that Anna has agency, and not that Simon respects her choice. The issue is that the scene seems to undermine the self-respect that his entire journey has been building. There's more, but this is getting long as is. Thank you for your consideration.

I think the reason Simon is so obsessed with Anna I because she's his first love. Those relationships tend to leave marks, and I bet more so because of his upbringing. Personally, I think this reign will cool his feeling for Anna after he sees their relationship the way it is, and not through the lens of nostalgia.

Nightmare Lore

Very early on if I recall correctly.

Eos

I hope so because it's killing the story there so many other characters that could be interesting and new ones unwritten, my biggest problem is the romance is just straight up bad she's pretty much the equivalent of a college party girl who gets around its annoying and not interesting and there's nothing complex, novel of fulfilling in her character.

ConstanTeen

"Everything would go swimmingly between them this time around." Yeah, buddy, sure. 😂

ConstanTeen

One of the reasons is that she's promiscuous and wasn't really romantically interested in Simon before the story happened, preferring the company of random servant boys and handsome dragons. Other than that, there's no much to her personality and the last time she really overreacted to his changes in personality while he didn't do anything to extreme in that reign. In comparison most other heroines are more interesting and developed in a good way.

ConstanTeen

It's not about sleeping with others, both Milfs were doing it and weren't virgins. It's about sleeping with others when you two already know each other and you're potentially interested in the girl while for her you're her tenth choice. A girl you meet in your twenties who had bfs before you – okay, fine. A childhood friend who was your crush since you hit puberty who was sleeping with other guys ignoring you as prospect, but then finally showing interest when you both are in your mid twenties... nope, just no. It's never romantic for a guy to be a secondary choice. And nothing wrong with virgins, it's more romantic this way "first and last." Even IRL it's less unrealistic than people assume, there are female virgins in their twenties.

Waaaay to many weird incels projecting their hangups and weird friendzone trauma on Anna and Simon in the comments

Krampus of Meranthe

Looks like the author went back and removed the bit about the mc being okay with his future wife fooling around in the academy. Yeah, I agree with him, the notion of this all powerful overlord being cucked by his own wife wouid be hilarious (and downright horrifying for any participant)

Nomad

This is going to end hilariously, willing to bet she uses that necklace to summon him to a trap at some point. He should just set her and Thalas up. The dude has proven to be a good guy and I just don't trust Anna.

Southern Mountains Loose Cultivator

“Regardless, I only have five Party spots and I must keep one for Firewand since she is a valuable hostage,” Simon informed his council. Once again, we have confirmation the Belzemine is the #1 girl.

Emily Gurnavage

@Marlin / anyone confused about Simon's infatuation with her: Its like he said in this chapter, and it makes sense tbh. No matter how bad of a match she is for current Simon, it makes sense he still wants her so badly, because: - she was his only real friend, and also expressed romantic interest in him even before the reigns - Simon deep down mourns for his old self, even if he doesn't admit it. He wanted to be good, and still wants to believe he is good, when he very much so has become that which he hates - She grounds him, like, as a connection to how he used to be and his old ideals - She is his original crush/love interest and he never got to explore that and dearly wants to. He's been with so many other women over the reigns, but never Anna, and the one time he wanted to try ended in tragedy I think this reign will be the one to make Simon realize just how much he has changed. He knows he changed, but he still refuses to truly see HOW MUCH. He can't admit it to himself. But I think that him putting forth his best efforts the current him can muster and failing to win Anna's heart or trust will crush him in a deep way and lead to greater character development and him no longer pursuing her in a romantic sense in future reigns.

Diego Urbina

I think Anna showed she intentionally kept a romantic distance from Simon to evade forming lingering feeling she wouldn't be able to act upon. When she got drunk she asked Simon if he might convince his father to legitimize him, which was the only way Maublanc might agree to the match. But yeah, I get the feeling ppl don't like her cause she's a bit of a free spirit. I personally don't see the issue, Simon has lots of partners, so letting Anna have a bit of fun isnt a big deal. Simon will likely have his own string of affairs this reign too. Hopefully not Antonine or whatever Thalas' fiance's name is.

Diego Urbina

It would strengthen the Church party too much. Maublanc would support Euphemia and might result in a civil war. Remember Maublanc is an 80+ commander.

Diego Urbina

Lol they're not even officially dating or bethrothed right now. They're literally just friends. Why is Anna sleeping around an issue? She gets creepy vibes from Simon, and I'm pretty sure its not going to work out in this reign. Edit: Just to be clear Simon doesn't need to marry Anna, and from my perspective I think he values her happiness more than trying to force her into a reluctant marriage.

Felix H.

May his (current) Reign be long. May his House be united. May he find Peace in his love, for every man needs balance.

A Zen

@Daniel "I really don't want a Balzam 2.0 or a Louis Reloaded." I'm offended! Simon is NOTHING like his father

Pandelion

Except that she didn't start showing interest. He basically showed up and forced her into a marriage, exactly what she didn't want and sure he's actually giving her a choice, but he's still putting her in a very awkward position, rejecting him will definitely have consequences and piss her father off. It would come off very insincere if he were like "I'm not actually forcing you, you can say no but I have exclusive right to your body until then". It would be different if she had made any indication of interest in him before this but she hasn't, at least not in this timeline.

SlaveToMyWhims

How sad for a fan of fantasy novels to have such an utter failure of imagination. Can't imagine any approach to marriage, other than 21st century western ruin posing as an institution of marriage. Nobody cares about Anna's "Vibes" or "Feeling awkvard" or need to scratch the lower itch. She's a sole air to a vast territory. Lives of countless thousands depend on how well she marries. Simon may be a chill overlord, but what about the next one? What about this new "dark" simon (from her perspective)? By acting like a "modern woman" Anna may well be condeming the entirety of the population her family rules to death and conquest. Love marriages among ruling classes are unicorns. Yet she'll test drive some more bananas and "think about" marrying the best prospect on the planet as far as her position is concerned? Come onnnnn!

Pandelion

By that same token, a fantasy novel can have whatever marriage standards it wants, just because it doesn't conform with what you want doesn't make it a failure of imagination. Also, I have to clarify that I don't think Anna makes a good partner for Simon at this point, she's too juvenile, he's lived some very eventful extra years while she's still essentially a child and he either can't see it or refuses to. Though she does serve a very important purpose as a moral compass still, but I think their relationship should remain platonic. I'm just pointing out some people's reasons for their dislike aren't very good. I'm not going to give a response to the point about her position and responsibility because frankly that's a much bigger discussion in my opinion and I don't feel like writing the whole ass essay it would take to make the topic justice, so I'll just defer on that point.

SlaveToMyWhims

Sorry, I'll have to disagree there too, on at least 2 counts. And I promise I'm not being a contrarian for the sake of it. The novel can't really have any marriage standards it wants. Needs to bow to the rules of internal logic, consistency, the 'fun' factor, aesthetics etc. You can't just slap modern views into it and call it "good". Other thing, Anna has no business being Simon's moral compass. In order to give a valuable advice or direction, you need to understand the issue. Anna has no hope of understanding Simon's perspective. The only thing she has is distance from his emotional burdens. Which is also true for any other person not involved in the world-saving/time looping project. She doesn't even have the benefit of having deep, intimate knowledge of the one she is to give an advice to, as Simon has irreversably changed. There is nothing unique she can tell him.

Exarion

I thought the idea was to keep Anna hidden until Valravn was out of commission?

Exarion

Strategy for killing the Oracle: - tell Elios how you intend to lure her out of hiding - add him to your Party so she can't track him - give him a transportation stone so you can call him when it's time - repeat steps to lure her out - call Elios (and other allies like Louis and Euphemia) and jump her Kill her and swallow her Crestone or hide it

Anna shifted uncomfortably in her seat, with Simon dismissing the subject for now. “We’ll discuss the matter in private later, Uncle.” Why is Anna calling her father uncle?

Where is chapter 221 and 222 (1) ?
