There is a great quote, by none other than Lee himself that might come in handy. (You may have used it, and I may have missed it. If so, mea culpa.) Anyway, after the war, Lee was asked about the erection of monuments on battlefields to the Confederacy. He opposed it, and responded, "I think it wiser not to keep open the sores of war, but to follow the examples of those nations who endeavored to obliterate the marks of civil strife, to commit to oblivion the feelings it engendered." People should have listened ...

I think Rebel Status placed "in your face" in public places should be up to the locals to decide but a public history park or museum would be better. I don't believe they should be torn down but removed appropriately. A statue in San Francisco, California of Grant was torn off.. so there are dumb persons on all side and Grant was a rare President who cared for Indians or Black Union Soldiers. I read many original diaries of Union and CSA troops and it gives you a better feeling of what was really like. I am not racist and married a 1/2 Mexican lovely lady so my kids are 25% Hispanic. Today, open racists are looked down upon. But back in the middle of the 19th Century to 1950's.. if you were NOT openly racist (to minorities and Jews), you would be called "a Free Thinker" people thought you were weird and just wrong in the head. Thanks you for being "a true Unionist" and I've argued for 34 years against CSA lovers and very, very slowly, they are seeing the light. Confederate Troops numbers have been dropping since 2000 and reenacting is 1/3 what it was in the height of 1993. I was at the 1987 Antietam, 1988 Gettysburg, 1992 Antietam (best one) , and 1996 Nashville. Major Arthur Henrick- California. Paymaster, USA.
