My First Day Home With Lefty And Touché | Quaker And Indian Ringneck Parrots

Day one with my project birds Lefty the quaker parrot and Touché the Indian ringneck parrot! PLEASE don't just leave your bird alone when you first bring it home. Yes, I let these birds sleep once we got in so late but in the morning I wanted to immediately interact and introduce myself. Allowing your bird to be alone to take in its surroundings from the inside of a cage only makes the surroundings (and you!) scarier upon the eventual meeting. Wheras interacting immediately, and taking cages out of the equation, allows for you to start bonding with your bird right away. Use comfort things like food, bathing, treats or whatever it is you find your new bird likes to offer as an incentive to continue positive interaction with you. Touch training is a great first trick to train because it's non-invasive by being a "hands off" approach to interacting and communicating. It allows anyone in the household to get the bird to go where you need it to go and lends itself to being able to be used for trick training or even flight training later on. It is so great to see how well they have adjusted. I love Touche's 'weally' so cute!! Lefty seems a lot more social then he did in the store which is great to see!! So glad you were able to take them both in!

Ellie Keely

Hurray! I'm so glad you took them both and truly believe that Touche being there is helping Lefty be comfortable.

HallyuGirl

I am so glad you were able to take on both birds! They are so different and I think it's going to be great for all of us to see how differently you apply your techniques to both birds. They are just so precious. I've always wanted a Ringneck but I'm not in a situation to take care of a bird at this point in my life... one day! Side note- I really need your sweatshirt, I am always cold too haha!

Katie Taylor

They are such little cuties! ♥️♥️♥️

JESSICA R SULLIVAN

Wow, this looks soooo positive. Lefty looked pretty affectionate in your sign-off! And Touche, what a strong flyer! What a surprise! So glad your other cutie is taking care of mom, so you can take care of the winged ones!

Omg I LOVED this! That day 1 is so important and I feel a lot of people either go to one extreme or the other - they think they should train train train and be super strict to set boundaries immediately or not touch the birds at all and leave them alone to get used to the place. This shows there can be a balance - you can train, see where they are at skill level wise, but you don’t have to expect greatness immediately (sure, you eventually don’t want Touché rushing up to your shoulder, but he also came down nicely so day 1 that’s maybe not the issue to tackle) . You also don’t want to leave them totally alone though - you want to start bonding and desensitizing. If I could go back I would’ve done my day 1’s with both my birds so differently.

Bree Therese

Omg I loved this. I absolutely love IRN’s gorgeous little voices. They’re both so sweet! Can’t wait to watch this journey.

Caroline Donald

They are both so gorgeous, I'm super excited to see the progress they make!!!

Jeanne Okerlund

Such beautiful babies! Thanks for such a great video, especially when you were not feeling well. Get better soon!

Belinda Hamilton

I can't wait to show this video to my irn Floyd. So happy to see Lefty thawing out.

The link doesn't seem to be working anymore. It says video unavailable when I click on the video on here.

BirdTricks

We have a fundraiser show today so I needed to schedule this for my YouTube channel this morning since I won’t have access to release it to them on time otherwise... and when a video is status “scheduled” it won’t work elsewhere. It has to be unlisted to work here. It’ll work tomorrow at 6am though, PST.

Thank you! Well done! And thank you-I just clicked! Jojo won’t work at all with the posh clicker I bought. But he eats my expensive paint brushes like crazy (seriously-he destroyed a £35 paintbrush when I turned my back) I wonder if he was trained with a wooden stick!

Helen Kay

It works! Nearly a year trying to clicker train Jojo with the posh clicker-try it with the end of a paintbrush and he does it first time and repeatedly! He was trained with something like the end of a paintbrush-that’s why he tore them to shreds; he thought he’d get treats!

S Harrell

she made you a bath because you were sick; how sweet is that?
