With how this went... what do you think I should do in preparation of having all these birds in the same trailer together? Let me know in the comments and we will see if I did any of those before the trip to make it smoother...

PS - thank goodness Zip was so forgiving about how this all went down.

Zip & Zoom #6 - Jinx Meets Zip & Zoom

Comments

3 beautifull Maccaws in one room and first thing I notice, Berry hanging upside down in her cage. She really wanted in on the fun. Sorry things did not go so well.

We know he’s okay with Ava so can we do Jinx, Ava then Zip or Zoom and put the other across from Jinx? Just an idea. I wish Jinx was a little more accepting for you it would make life a little easier. Good luck

Every time you bring Jinxy in the same room you give her a treat and someone else gives them a treat too, so they all associate each other with oh yay, Treat! Then eventually every time they interact positively maybe? I’ve never had this issue with birds!

Wendy Cottingham

I am curious what it would have looked like if it would have been Dave doing the same thing. Or introducing one at a time. It seems to be just one of Jinx's things that he doesn't deal with well.

Jinx just wants all the love from you! It’s so good to see you thinking through problems. I like to see how you process. A question for you… do parrots have a hierarchy? When I owned chickens there was definitely a hierarchy. Does Jinx see himself as King over the other blues? Just curious if it’s that way with parrots. I’m really interested in how you train out jealousy in a bird. I’m not sure I would know how to do that. Obviously you have to make it more painful for Jinx to be a jerk than it is for him to accept you with other birds. I imagine it will take more time of slow desensitization for true progress to be made as opposed to finding a quick solution for your trip. He heightens quite quickly it seems so to find a way to prevent him from getting heightened could be tricky. Could you cage Jinx and reward his calm while watching other birds fly to you? Im so interested to see what you do! I love these learning opportunities!

Oh! I can't even imagine what chaos would have ensued if she'd been allowed to do that lol that would have been the end of me for sure!

Great insight, Wendy! I will be sharing a video of what it looked like when Dave attempted next month! Jinx is great about free flying with other birds but sharing his human... not so much... I think he likes flight trips because no other birds land on me!

There isn't any hierarchy with parrots, that's why when people refer to them as dominant it's presented as a myth. That doesn't mean that one doesn't present more confidence over others though, especially in certain areas they're accustomed to that others are not (thinking Blueberry here with any other project bird ever haha) The problem with putting Jinx in a cage while the others are out is them flying to that cage and me being able to rush to intercept in time because caging Jinx will undoubtedly tick him off royally as I interact in front of him with other birds and he will be racing to get a chance to get those birds if given one. So that's why I didn't try it that way. It doesn't mean I couldn't troubleshoot how to set it up to avoid that scenario though! Would just take some planning and creative thinking!

Jinx believes that you are his mate. He gets angry if Dave is in the room with the two of you! I think you're going to have to have Dave load the birds (yes I think spacing them would be wise for now) and handle them. With Dave I believe Jinx would be better behaved. You may have to do this for a while until Jinx gets more comfortable being around them-

Thanks for the note on dominance. Ha! Blue to the Berry is not lacking in confidence for sure! Love that little one 😍 I’m so curious to see what you do. Jinx is a force for sure. Maybe like others say having Dave there, but that seems to heighten Jinx also. I’m so curious how you will avoid heightening him or more likely, be able to ease him into calm.

Another question I have is there any way to prevent a bird bonding so tightly to you? Or is it really the personality of the bird? Like, you can’t really prevent a person from feeling a certain way about you. Is that true of birds as well? Was this inevitable with Jinx or do you think there was something training wise you could have done earlier to prevent him seeing you as his mate? Not saying at all to criticize. I’m trying to learn. I would imagine a lot of this is things you don’t have control over.

I'm having trouble getting any of your videos to play. I keep getting errors
