Chapter 102, The Founder of the Truth Society
Mind Freya had [Mind Reading], but unlike Luna, she had no habit of prying into other people’s secrets.
Normally, she barely used the ability at all.
And right now, the two people sitting in front of her were both Scholars. Even if she tried reading their minds, she probably would not get anything useful.
Just as Mind Freya was about to ask what exactly the two of them were hinting at, Euphemia changed the subject first.
“Oh, right! Grandpa, can you get Rank Two and Rank Three Law Path potions?”
Augustus looked puzzled.
“Law Path potions? What do you need those for?”
“Oh, Grandpa, don’t worry about that! I just need them for something.”
Euphemia thought for a moment and added, “Actually, you don’t even need to give them to me. If you can just let me look at them once and then return them, that works too.”
Augustus frowned slightly.
“That’s honestly a little difficult. Does it have to be the Law Path?”
If Euphemia wanted Scholar Path potions, the Holmes family had the formulas and could simply produce them themselves.
If she wanted extraordinary items, Augustus could make those too.
But Law Path potions were a different matter.
For a great noble house like the Holmes family, if they wanted access to the Law Path, they normally would not ask the royal family or the government to hand over potions directly.
Instead, they would send one of their children into official service.
The state would arrange the rest.
That was what Euphemia’s parents had originally planned for her.
They had already reached an agreement with the government to send Euphemia into Special Affairs after graduation, and the authorities had even delivered a Law Path potion in advance.
Then Euphemia had turned around and fed the potion to a parrot.
Even by her standards, that had been absolutely unhinged.
Augustus thought for a moment.
“But if all you need is to look at them, then I actually do know where you can.”
“In one month, His Majesty will be holding a royal gathering.”
“Unless something unexpected happens, they’ll display every Law Path potion from Rank One through Rank Six.”
At its core, the event was a way for the royal family to demonstrate its power to the nobility.
A very clear message.
The royal family controlled the Law Path.
Euphemia immediately said, “Grandpa, I want two invitations!”
Augustus laughed.
“All right. I’ll get them for you when I go back.”
With that settled, Augustus changed the subject.
“Euphemia, is there any extraordinary item you want?”
“You successfully advanced to Rank Four. I should prepare a proper gift to celebrate.”
Euphemia’s father was only a Rank Four practitioner.
Her mother was Rank Three.
Yet Euphemia had already reached Rank Four at such a young age, matching her father.
Rank Five was clearly within reach.
Perhaps even Rank Six.
In other words, Euphemia had the potential to become the strongest practitioner the Holmes family had ever produced.
But Euphemia scratched her head.
“Hmm... I don’t think I need anything right now.”
“I’m not that far from Rank Five anyway, so why don’t you just save the gift for when I advance again?”
A huge question mark practically appeared above Augustus’s head.
For a moment, he genuinely wondered if he had misheard her.
“What?”
Euphemia spoke in the calmest possible voice while saying something utterly outrageous.
“My Rank Four potion is already about halfway digested. I don’t think the rest will take very long.”
Augustus stared at her.
“This... this...”
For once, he seemed to have no idea what to say.
He knew Euphemia had no reason to lie to him, but he still asked, “Are you serious?”
“Of course.”
Augustus fell silent again.
Advancing this far at such a young age could no longer be described with a simple word like genius.
She was a prodigy on an entirely different level.
Augustus had previously thought reaching Rank Six would already be an extraordinary achievement for Euphemia.
But now...
Could Rank Seven actually be possible?
“Good! Good! Good!”
Augustus said it three times in a row.
The excitement on his face was almost impossible to hide.
Then another problem immediately occurred to him.
The Holmes family did not possess a Rank Seven potion formula.
Augustus silently made up his mind.
The moment he returned, he would start looking for one.
Names of old friends began appearing in his mind one after another.
He was already an elderly man, and a Rank Five [Craftsman] at that.
Over the decades, he had created extraordinary items for more people than he could count.
When it came to connections and information channels, Augustus had no shortage of either.
At the same time, he asked, “So what enormous secret have you been investigating lately?”
“How did your potion digest this quickly?”
Euphemia froze.
She obviously could not tell him that she had been uncovering Freya’s secrets.
After a brief pause, she said, “Grandpa... have you ever heard of the Truth Society?”
She had only intended to use the question as a natural way to lead into the next topic.
But Augustus’s reaction caught her completely off guard.
“The Truth Society?”
His expression changed.
“You encountered someone from the Truth Society?”
“Huh?”
Now both Euphemia and Mind Freya were surprised.
Euphemia stared at him.
“Grandpa, you know about the Truth Society?”
“Know about it?”
Augustus gave a faint sigh.
“The person leading that organization is probably an old friend of mine.”
“So that fool really did create it after all.”
He looked at Euphemia.
“Tell me what happened.”
Euphemia briefly explained what Luna had been doing in the Fanipaca Empire.
A dual-class Rank Five practitioner conducting experiments on people.
When Augustus heard the words “dual-class,” he sighed.
“So he really continued down that road...”
He leaned back slightly.
“His name is Kane.”
“He was born a commoner.”
“The first time we met was at a practitioner gathering. Back then, he wasn’t even a practitioner yet. He was there trying to buy a potion.”
“And I happened to be the one who sold him his first Scholar Path potion.”
“After that, we naturally became friends.”
Augustus’s expression grew distant as old memories surfaced.
“People are different from one another. Practitioners are no different.”
“We both followed the Scholar Path, but I always believed Kane was a genius.”
“A real one.”
“He was far, far smarter than I was.”
“For a long time, we got along extremely well.”
“Then eventually, I discovered that he had begun crossing lines for the sake of his research.”
“He became willing to use almost any method.”
Augustus’s voice grew colder.
“He even experimented on homeless people.”
“That was when we had a major argument.”
“Neither of us was willing to back down. Neither of us could convince the other.”
“In the end, he left me with one final statement before walking away.”
Augustus paused.
“He said he would create an organization called the Truth Society.”
“If I refused to help him, he would find others who would.”
“And one day, he would uncover the secrets of the Paths and dissect the truth of the world itself.”
Afterward, Augustus had tried to investigate.
But he never found any trace of an organization called the Truth Society.
Twenty or thirty years passed.
Eventually, Augustus assumed Kane had either abandoned the idea...
Or died somewhere unknown and forgotten.
But now it seemed neither had happened.
Kane was still alive.
And his research had never stopped.
