Today is International Transgender Day of Visibility. On a day when we should be celebrating who we are and how far we’ve come, we are also in the middle of our rights being stripped away by the state and federal governments. On February 26, 2026, Kansas SB 224 took effect. This law states that any driver’s license or state ID with a gender marker different from the gender assigned at birth is immediately invalid, leaving trans people with no grace period to renew or update their IDs. It also states that people have to go to the gendered bathroom they were assigned at birth, and a person can sue someone they suspect of using a bathroom not aligned with their assigned gender at birth. This may lead to being fined up to $1,000 or charged with a misdemeanor. Other states are starting to follow suit.

This is a tactic to force trans people not to transition or come out by restricting their ability to travel and exist in public. Trans people risk being harassed, reported, or removed, or worse, if they use the bathroom that aligns with their gender assigned at birth. If someone can’t safely use a public bathroom, they may cut trips short, skip things they need to do, or stay home more. In practice, they want trans people afraid to exist in public so they do not risk being clocked. Also, not being able to drive means that trans people are being cut off from their job, the grocery store, family and friends, and much more. This law not only negatively impacts trans people but cis people as well. Trans people make up a very small percentage of the population, meaning cis people who do not meet gender expectations will also be targeted. Tall cis women, masc cis women, and cis women of color have already reported being questioned or harassed when using public bathrooms that align with their assigned gender at birth.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas is currently filing a lawsuit against Kansas, Doe v. State of Kansas, to repeal this heinous law. Here’s a hyperlink to the ACLU’s donation page to help their fight against this law and the LGBTQ Foundation of Kansas. For those living in Kansas, Loud Light has created a template form regarding SB 224, send it to your representatives. In addition to the ACLU, there are many organizations doing critical work, including:

This law and upcoming laws like it are cruel and dehumanizing, but this won’t stop us from existing. They can take our driver’s licenses and state IDs away. They can try to reverse our corrected birth certificates and gender markers. They can try to stop us from going to the bathroom. We’re still gonna be here. We’ve always been here, and we’re not going to stop being here. If you’re still here, from us to you, your existence means you are what you say gender you are, your pronouns are yours and correct, you are welcome and worthy, and you deserve to be happy, healthy, and safe. Our very existence is resistance. Our joy is revolutionary. We will not made invisible.

Happy International Transgender Day of Visibility

P.S.: A word from Mr. Beaux... all we'll say is, we hope you have a good dental plan.
