So... Mark and Helly finally have a chance to talk.

Dylan is doing his best not to lose his new favourite perk and...

Mark, takes another step into reintegration... and I hated it. Loathed it. Disgusting.

(Sorry for the squealing and squeamishness...)

Fuck yeah was thinking when the next reaction will drop

Alex

the chinese resturant scene is so interesting it's like their chemistry is bleeding through the outside world

Alex

also the difference between this love scene and the one from 2x04 this feels more as the innies are adolescent the way they’re fumbling and giggling

Helly R

My man Mark S with the absolute perfect answer to the question "Was it different with me?"

Helly R

Or maybe these two people just inherently have chemistry regardless. Which I think is a question the show wants to ask. Low key it might be my favourite scene in the entire show.

Helly R

I really have to give kudos to the writers for portraying the Mark-Helly stuff in this way. The explicit consent (which they apparently came up with while shooting and is in deliberate contrast to ep4), both iMark and Helly taking back their autonomy any way they can, Helly R retreating in an adult way to process her emotions and then deciding no, screw this, I want this and I deserve this and I'm not going to let Helena take this from me. Then she's so vulnerable and nervous in the hallway hoping for Mark to reciprocate. It's portrayed with such empathy. It's very sweet.

Jay Allan

Fun reaction! - I've always taken Mark saying he knows who Helena is like he knows of her... like one would know of like steve jobs or something, like knowing the big bosses of the company you work for - just how i took it, although I definitely feel like there's some subconscious emotional overlap from innie mark thats got him a bit confused like "why do i kind of feel some kind of affection for my boss right now" lol

Erin

I just love this episode…I call it the ‘shipper episode’ 😅 The Burt, Irv and Fields scene is so interesting and we get some background on oBurt and that he’s not such a nice guy. Now the Mark and Helly-I love her taking back her autonomy in a way. It must’ve been very empowering. The diner scene-so much going on there that I don’t think a lot of fans even understand 😂 It’s so awkward, flirtatious, and terrifying that all I can do is laugh. You can tell here that Mark doesn’t understand why he’s flirting with her or why there seems to be this attraction between them and Britt plays this so well. The bit where she says ‘Hannah’ threw the whole vibe off though and he must’ve known something else was going on. Personally I believe Mark knows Helena from Lumon being in the public eye, on the news etc.. Also wanted to add a tidbit…in the diner scene the music playing in the background is from episode 8 of the first season. It’s playing in the background when Mark and Helly are talking in the kitchenette (and both possibly realizing their feelings for the other). I thought maybe that’s where oMark is mentally? Like maybe the music is triggering emotions in his brain from that moment? Who knows 🤷‍♀️

Knowing who Helena Egan is is like knowing who Steve Jobs, Tim Cook, Elon Musk or Bill Gates is. She is a well known public figure.

Christoffer Andersen

We learn in the final of first season that the reason that Helena severed herself was as a PR move – "Even the head of the company is willing to go trough with Severance so it must be worth it". There is probably more to it though, and also i get the feeling that she was pressured pretty heavily into doing it, OR that it was for approval from her father.

MAROON

Alright I'm sat

Matt Quinn

Mark loves Helly, not Gemma. Everyone assumes the outie's world/loves should take preeminence. Helly has been consistent throughout. She is direct and no nonsense. She has never shown the deviousness of Helena. Helena has been taught to repress her own feelings and make them completely subservient to her father's, to Kier worship. Helly is what Helena could have been if not completely crushed, repressed, trained to be devious. Innie Mark has no memory of being in love with Gemma. Everything is very deeply subconscious. Also outie Mark knows Helena because she's the operational head of a huge company and would have been in the news. Helena brings up Gemma because she wants to know if outie and innie Mark have made the connection that Gemma is still alive. My thoughts.

Erin

That was the ONLY answer 😂

Stefan Jaspers

Looking forward to your reaction for episode 7, "Chikhai Bardo". That episode really messed with me and it was stuck in my head for days. Definitely one of my favourite episodes of any series ever. It feels unlike any other episode in the show.

Justin Odum

I think it's safe to say EVERYONE knows who Helena Egan is. This is why Helly's highjacking of her speech was such a big deal that required all the public damage control.

Justin Odum

No spoilers, I promise. The next episode, as a stand alone episode, is in my opinion the best episode from the first 2 seasons. Not necessarily in terms of the wider story. In terms of being an amazingly well-crafted episode in and of itself.

Justin Odum

Regarding Devon, now I am jealous of Ricken AND her crush, too.

Christina Paz

Yeah, I think so too. But after Helena saw the kiss with iMark, I think she realized an opportunity to feel love, just like Claudie said. Some speculated that Helena was trying to get more info on oMark by going to the restaurant, which I think is true but I also think she's longing for that connection that she just doesn't feel with her own cold family.

Christina Paz

Important distinction: both iMark and oMark are seeing the flashback of Gemma while sleeping with Helena, not Ms. Casey. So oMark is seeing Ms. Casey for the first time at the end of ep. 5 and iMark is seeing Gemma for the first time in ep. 4.

Christina Paz

Also, do not worry about being squeemish during the surgery scenes! I literally do the same thing and skip forward when I'm watching them. I do appreciate that they show certain things because it answers questions. Like in season 1 ep 1 we wondered if the chip could be removed and in ep 2 they showed it latch in there with the little wings so we know the only way it can be physically removed is if its pulled out, damaging the brain. .... but yeah, I can't watch that stuff and accept that I am just missing stuff every time it comes up! lol

Dan Benge

Sitting here thinking that the Mark and Helly relationship reminds me of the show Fringe. Then John Noble pops up 10 minutes later. What are the odds.

Nightowl

He definitely only knows Helena by sight. She’s the daughter of Lumon’s CEO and his designated successor. Mark will at least have seen her on TV if not around the company. Also, she makes it clear when greeting him that they hadn’t met yet.

Jay Allan

Yea agreed, exactly what I figured

Jennyjoy

To go from being tackled off the stage at the Lumon Gala, woken up being drowned, then waking up to find out the man you have feelings for slept with somebody he thought was you. Roller coaster of emotions is an understatement

Helly R

Helena is socially weird because was she born into a cult. Honestly she wasn't doing that bad at flirting until she pulled the "Hanna" thing (which imo was an attempt to distance herself from knowing who Gemma is - personally I don't think she has an ulterior motive here beyond her want for human connection). And like others have mentioned this is a company town, everyone knows who the Eagans are. Also I'm not sure why Mark would be hesitant to sleep with Helly. I think it's pretty clear to him at this point that this is Helly, and Mark S loves Helly, not Helena. His encounter with Helena was non-consensual and a violation. So he's not sleeping with her "again" even though they share a body. It's certainly complicated by the idea that Helly R is Helena's "inner child", or the person she is underneath her life experiences. So in that sense they are the same, but I think the show argues pretty persuasively that the distinct autonomy of the innies and outties makes them separate individuals.

ClaudieTV

I didn't see that bit, but damn good to know haha!

ClaudieTV

I know right! Isn't she wonderful!

ClaudieTV

Yes I'm excited to share that soon :)

Dan Benge

Am I going crazy or has someone referred to Gemma as Hannah before. As soon as she said it, I don't know if it was when she was pretending to be Helli or if it was Cobel in S1, but I was sure that "mistake" had happened before. Maybe a different name, or maybe I'm just mad.

J G

I think outtie Mark just knows who Helena is because she's "like the head of the company" to quote her. She's stalking him because she's lived a sheltered life in a cult and probably never had romance, also why she's so awkward.

Christian M

At the 52 minute mark, when Mark is staring at Helena, you hear a whoosh. That's him having some idea in the back of his mind that he recognizes her, but it's not clicking with him. You are right. She looks familiar and because of reintegration, he is somewhat familiar with her.

Ruby Nieto

At the end there with that long pause Claudie, yes, we know the feeling! Yes, I believe Burt lured Irv away from his place, so Drummond could go look thru Irv’s things. So, the Chinese restaurant encounter between Mark and Helena…it seems like she is stalking him and still wants to know what happened to him during overtime, but why? Lumon got him back working inside, so why? A fellowship, if at university, is given to attract and retain students, but since Lumon is more like a cult, the fellowship could also be used to retain and promote to a higher level devoted young believers. Nice touch with the “Claudie edits” blue box. Very clever! Can’t wait for the next episode! Also congrats on the 10k!

JayAgeDee

About being sqeamish, it's fine. I would say it is better that you know your boundaries and keep to them, than trying to cross into deeply uncomfortable territory for the sake of "the reaction".

junnei

Hey Claudie, loved your reaction! Just have some notes again: Mark probably uses "shared vessels" as it's part of his 'lumon-speak', probably vocabulary picked up from the handbook (insert something about religious-speak and how it sounds alot like the 'cult of Kier') Mark definitely had feelings before the OTC considering their chemistry and banter, the scene where Dylan points out mark is all dewy mouthed, and even their conversation during the egg bar social. Helly rationalizes Helena tricking Mark as something to drive them apart, because to her, her outside self is evil and conniving and has everything in the world, and she can't fathom a possibility where its to have some human connection. Britt Lower has talked about how Helly takes back her agency this episode, and her taking off her shoes is symbolic of that; her no longer walking in Helena's shoes. It's funny how Helena and Mark Scout have chemistry when are in 'opposition'. It makes sense why Mark and Helly work, and gives us insight on how you would have chemistry with the same person despite losing your memories. It's also interesting that she's more awkward than Helly, like being raised in a cult probably socially stunts you more than losing your entire personal memories. She did get pretty far with her awkward pathetic rizz, i'll give her that. She also says she's "like the head of the company", except she really isn't, and has no real power as of yet. Also, a great bit of acting by Adam Scott, when he laughs at Helena's banter, he starts a confused look on his face, almost like Mark is wondering WHY he has chemistry with this woman he met just a minute ago. Also, to why Mark recognizes Helena, I think the simplest answer is that he knows her because she is the daughter of the CEO of the company that he works at. I'm sure Jame Eagan has a more recognizable name to the public in this universe, like a Bill Gates or Susan Wojcicki, so it wouldn't be out of place for Mark to be more aware of her existence, and able to recognize her, especially when someone like her shows up in a random chinese restaurant. I'm gonna go over the explanation of the surgery since you've probably already had it explained, but you should get your friends to give you a timestamp to where the surgery ends because Mark's delivery of "What the fuck" when he sees his POV being on top of Helly has got to be top ten wtfs i've heard. Really enjoying your reactions, thank you for slaving away editing, it really does mean a lot.

Justin Odum

We'll get on with it then!

Daniel Raso-Llarás

They ran into each other in the pilot, the oMark and oHelena, but mostly it is just that she is a public figure. He would know her in that regard.

ClaudieTV

Hehe yeah theres something off about Burt! You'll learn alot about the fellowship in the next ep for sure! And thank you!

ClaudieTV

Aw thank you Junnei, nah I love making vids, and I'm so glad people enjoy them! 'no longer walking in Helena's shoes' is so clever btw thank you!

Robert Northrop

I find it interesting that Helly was NOT bothered when she thought Mark meant that it Ms. Casey with whom he had shared vessels. And I think we underestimate Irving.

ClaudieTV

Come to think about it, I agree!

Paul Bütof

I think the simple reason why outie Mark knows who Helena is is because she's the CEO to be of the multi-billion dollar company he works for. The whole Gala-thing shows us that Helna is at least somewhat of a public face of the company. She must be relatively famous.
