Alex

let's fucking go

Skorm

Goodness gracious, one hour and forty minutes 😂

Alex

saw this comment on reddit: Audience: Save that man's wife Mark S: Okay done Audience: Now kill yourself Mark S: ... Audience: In front of Helly Mark S: runs away Audience: I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS GUY- joke aside, to be honest I knew that we were getting that ending with the intro even telling us I feel awful for Gemma, but I do also sympathize with Mark S at the end. When the moment comes, he simply doesn't want to step through a doorway that very well might kill him instantly. And not only kill him, but possibly everyone else he knows (if his Outie takes down Lumon). If we accept that Mark S is a full human being who deserves rights and autonomy, and we accept that his needs and feelings are real, then it's easy to understand why he chose not to give up the love of his life for the sake of someone else's "happy ending." also britt lower said that look at end where's she looking at gemma is her first time sensing emphany towards an outtie it's rough decision she told him to leave but he did not want to go, 10 minutes together or ten years together - whatever they can get, they will take. It doesn’t matter to where they are running but whom they are running with. iMark owed oMark nothing when it comes to his choice finally - he is a person too (this is what the show was all along). As an audience I love this show for the innes :) but can’t wait for the ACTUAL MDR Uprising - foreshadowing they just take over the severed floor their own community.

Alex

it's also very funny that director ben stiller wanted to end it right before helly arrives so it would've been just mark thinking about going through that door i'm very glad he didn't go with that ending for s2

Skorm

very much so hehehe

Helly R

iMark isn't really hoping that he'll reintegrate at the end, because for all he knows that's bullshit (and as Devon says, he's not entirely wrong about that). iMark just doesn't want to die. Even if it's just 5 more minutes with Helly, that's better than non-existence. It's beautiful, incredibly romantic and tragic all at once. What are well all doing but running through the corridors with the ones with love for a long as we can until our ultimate doom anyway. Brilliant ending.

Helly R

Don't worry so much about trying to get it all - you get loads of it! Fundamentally, this is a human emotional show at its centre. The mystery is fun but it's not everything. Season 3: Helly and Mark lead an innie revolt and refuse to leave the severed floor. They have the band the goat people. Season 3 will most likely be in the first half of 2027, so 2 years.

MAROON

Oh fuck I'm here

MAROON

1 hour and 40 minutes what a fucking treat, oh my god. I can't fucking wait

ClaudieTV

Thank you Helly R, feels weird to say but here I am hehe, and yes a revolt was my idea too haha

MAROON

"oh my god he's battling with himself " Chikhai Bardo, ego death I love this show

MAROON

"honestly I love how you had that experience" the talking down like he's a child, oh my god

Justin Odum

Thoughts: 1) Devon being weird? I don't think so. Maybe a little bit of clumsy writing in getting us from Episode 7 to getting her, Mark, and Cobel together. 2) We know the chips are set to places besides the severed floor, like the retreat. They aren't set to the testing floor. 3) The Ricken crew are people innie Mark met. The painting seemed to be people he interacted with. 4) I think the writers did the whole "is it the innie or the outie" in episode 1-4. I think they are/were done with that. 5) I thought it was clear in episode 9 that Cobel referring to Devon as "one of Jame's" was referring to Jame getting lots of women pregnant. That was the explanation for bringing her in, even though she wasn't on the list. It was all very hush hush. Based on episode 10 this seemed to be in an attempt to "sire" a worthy "heir".

MAROON

I love how he avoids her gaze at first because he knows he'll break and he's afraid that would be the last time he sees her and then she says "I'm her" and he's so flabbergasted and they're crying so bittersweetly ahahahaha my heart my HEART

Matildathepirate

well... that was the last severance reaction (FOR NOW) im pretty sure that its been over a month since i finished watching and im still confused about absolutely everything, the brain mush has not been de-mushed yet i fear. im exited for the Q&A hehe thank you for introducing me to all these wonderful shows Claudie!

Justin Odum

But will it be a revolt? Jame Egan is clearly enamored with Helly. I think that will be key next season. He "sees Kier" in her, so he will be happy to have her and innie Mark stay together in their innie personas, for as long as they want, provided she and Mark contribute to Lumon in some way. That will be the dilemma.

MAROON

I was waiting to see you lose your shit over choreography and merriment

yurintroubl

I think you caught most everything that there was to glean. Waaaay more than I did on first viewing. One quick note re: Cobel's reaction to learning Irv was drawing the dark hallway.... Pretty sure that was Cobel "wearing her scientist hat"trying to figure out how/why the implant was failing to block Irv's vision of the hallway.

MAROON

That defeated look after the finale ended

Kathryn Ellis

Great reaction! I think when Outie mark and Gemma ran away from the testing floor and Dr. Mauer said “you’ll kill them all” I think he was referring to all the 25 versions of Gemma that he seems to be in love with. I don’t think outie mark had any intention that his innie would stay, but I understand why he did! If you need more severance before next season, you can read the Lumon letter or the chapters of The You You Are that apple released!!

Erin

I like how you actually think through the ending. A lot of other reactions I see are people being pissed that innieMark stayed. But why would he go with this woman he doesn’t know and potentially die when he could live and stay with the only people he knows and loves? Ben Stiller has said that last scene was supposed to be reminiscent of The Graduate: two lovers whose future is uncertain. We don’t know where Mark and Helly are going, and they don’t either. They are just running, trying to spend as much time with one another as possible. And innieMark did his job. He got Gemma out…no one said Mark had to go with her. I’m assuming there was a plan B if Mark didn’t join her…perhaps Cobel or Devon leading her out the rest of the way? A lot of questions for season 3. I’m also thinking with more Gemma next season we will also get more Helly/Helena in regards to her future with Lumon.

Jennyjoy

Now that we know what we know about Harmony's connection to Lumon, I took the beginning where she's opening up the book and how it lights up her face, as showing her looking at the book of her research into the creation of Severance

Matt Quinn

You are the first reviewer I've seen who gets all the subtle psychology of what's happening through the whole rescue of Gemma. You are the ONLY one who has thought through the fact Mark is saying goodbye to Gemma in the elevator. That hadn't occurred to me at all. You're probably right. Trish said a lot of what I was going to say. Ben Stiller has said at the end it is Helly with Mark, not Helena. On thing that will make next season even more interesting is that Jame has more interest in Helly than Helena as a person. Perhaps he wants to just turn off Helena and somehow create a permanent overtime contingency for Helly. I find it interesting that Jame sees Kier in the rebellious Helly, but he's created a system where no one is to rebel. He sees Kier in the very antithesis of everything he's created: a world of drone zombies who are obedient to him. I have become obsessed with this show. It touches on so many psychological and social topics that I connect with (seems a lot of people have): Dissociation. What is the line between a religion/spiritual belief and a cult? What makes us a person? How often our lives seem broken into such distinct phases. Dealing with the pain of loss. And many others. I'm glad you're all caught up. I was surprised when you mentioned autism the other day. You seem so bubbly and connected to life, insightful towards others' motivations. You seem everything I've NOT associated with autism, in my limited knowledge of it. Hoping we don't have to wait too long until season three.

Helly R

Could easily be both, but the Helly speech implies some kind of strike (in the script she originally said "Severed Workers Unite!"). I agree that the "sees Kier" in her is a way for Helly R to stick around.

Helly R

oMark was such a manipulative dick in that conversation. He still doesn't see the innies as people.

Emily

I’m ready……(I’m not, I will never be but we digress 😂)

Jennyjoy

I love your reactions! It's been fun to rewatch the series with you. I few thoughts I don't think Mark was saying goodbye in the elevator. His outie was reuniting with his wife until they severed. Maybe the birthing cabin is like the OTC- there were so many other options in that list I love seeing the conversation between the two Marks. Adam Scott does a spectacular job because you really do see the difference between innie/outie Mark. I also liked Dylan's storyline, he's the only one that shows respect for his innie, he sees him as someone else and gave him autonomy. I was so anxious through this entire episode knowing it was building to something, it was crazy!

Jennyjoy

Oh yeah! Adam Scott got a concussion during the fight scene- when got dragged by his legs and thrown against the wall. I think that's the actual take they end up using

Justin Odum

Oh that's what Helly was referring to, certainly. I just think Jame Eagan liking Helly means she will absolutely have an opportunity to remain with Mark if she's willing to play along, whatever that ends up meaning. I think the scene between Helly and Jame was really about setting the stage for season 3.

Jennyjoy

If you haven't watched the behind the scenes at the end of each episode's credits, they are very interesting!

Justin Odum

Definitely agree Mark wasn't saying goodbye to Gemma.

Christina Paz

Yes! I definitely agree that Dr. Mauer was referring to the 25 severed versions of Gemma.

Christina Paz

Overall though, Cobel wouldn't have known that outtie Irv was painting the testing floor elevator. Unless it was her that outtie Irv was communicating with on the outside but I don't think so.

ClaudieTV

I don't have that on the version I'm watching I'll try to find them somewhere :)

ClaudieTV

Thank you Matt, all good points! And I believe S3 is 2027

ClaudieTV

Ah ok, the graduate, thank you!

ClaudieTV

Ah yes, my thinking at the time was all the other innies but of course, Gemma's innies... yes

ClaudieTV

You're more than welcome Matilda! :)

Christina Paz

Yeah, I do wonder if Devons behavior is the result of clumsy writing or if it is due to a bigger connection Devon and Mark have to Cobel that hasn't been revealed to Mark or us yet. They haven't explained Cobels care for Mark yet and that "I care for you" at the end just makes me think they will elaborate more in season 3. There are things that were answered in Season 2 that were left open in Season 1 and I just expect the same from Season 3 for Season 2.

Christina Paz

I know people don't like the theory that Helly/Helena is pregnant but I could see Jame being estatic that Helly and Mark have a child to carry on the "spirit of Kier".

Justin Odum

Yeah, like when Cobel asked to talk to Mark alone and Devon immediately leaves. Honestly, I think they just wanted that scene between Mark and Cobel. If Devon is there she's not going to stay quiet. And the writers knew that. And they wanted that dialogue to be 1 on 1 so they just made it happen.

Christina Paz

YAY! We did it! I agree that it feels kind of weird and deflating as a viewer after the ending. Not that the episode isn't great, it is! But it leaves it on such a weird "uh....ok....." kind of place that all you can do is just sit in the awkward lol I was one of the ones literally there from the release of the very first episode of Season 1. Waiting THREE YEARS for Season 2 was KILLER! But honestly the anticipation made the experience of Season 2 even better and I expect that with Season 3 as well. From the latest things I've read, they are currently in the writers room for Season 3 and that barring any unexpected pandemics or writers strikes, lol. we should get Season 3 sooner than in 3 years! Ben did say in an interview recently that they've also been presented with the opportunity to do spinoffs of sorts and are currently thinking through that. Oh! And I wanted to say, you connected that the gun was going to go off in the elevator quicker than any other reactor I've seen! So many people are in the moment and react to it in real time vs knowing its coming. Our anxious spidey senses are good for something I guess! lol Looking forward to the character break downs and Q&A. I'm almost done listening to the audiobook version of The You You Are and BOY does it explain so much! It explains why Ricken is why he is as he is lol as well as Rickens friendship with Gemma and elaborates on the story about the "funny bees" that Ricken mentions in Season 1. Ep 9. Defintely a great read for world building and context!

Christina Paz

Yes! We should have a reaction to the bts portions after each episode!

Justin Odum

That could be I suppose, but I heard another person make what might be a good point. Do the writers really want to go down the road of Mark and Gemma being unable to have a child, and Mark and Helly having a child? I don't know. They would need to tread carefully, I think.

Helly R

Random other trivia, the final run through the halls was shot digitally and printed onto film. This is so the freeze-frame zoom-in scales with the grain properly, to evoke the mostly 60s movies this is inspired by (particularly The 400 Blows and The Graduate) and also to thematically match the Mark-Gemma flasbacks in 207 which were shot on actual film. Mark and Helly are making their own equivalent memories now.

junnei

No notes today, just a little write-up on how I think in isolation, the ending of S2's Cold Harbor would be a great ending to severance. Many people during the release of S2 speculated, given the hints, that Mark and Gemma will follow the fates of Orpheus and Eurydice. Mark, journeying into the underworld of Lumon to get his wife back, with the condition that he must not look back, lest he loses her forever. But Severance flips the script, with Mark playing the role of both Orpheus and Eurydice at the end. He looks back, but he doesn't lose Gemma, rather Gemma loses him. But it isn't all tragedy. Mark Scout has been throughout the series, portrayed as someone who deeply loves his wife. He, in grief, made a deal with the devil, which would eventually spell his downfall. The decision to create a new life. A blank slate, one that can't feel the grief he feels, and in turn, cannot feel the love that he has. Still, not all is lost. His love, despite all his wrongdoings, endures. He loves her so much that in spite how he's wronged his innie, he wills her escape. He loves her so much, he'd die for her. And he does, only it's not his choice to make. Mark S, born into a cruel world, lives a life without truly living, grasps at scraps. He forms bonds, finds love, and pieces together a semblance of the life he's denied. When he meets his maker, he's elated, told about stories of how he loves. But he finds a wolf in sheep's clothing, hiding lies with niceties. And he can doom Mark Scout's loved one, just as they planned to do with him. But innie Mark isn't cruel. He's yet to be corrupted by the harsh world of the outside. So when Helly tells him to save his outie's wife and live the life he was meant to live, he does, risks everything for someone he doesn't know. Yet right as he gets to the door, the equator, the line where the world divides in two, something happens. He looks at Ms. Casey, and not a single trace of that person is there. On the other side of the door is a stranger, not meek, not shy. There's not a trace left. And for the first time in his life, he has a choice. To live or to die? One could argue that going back to Lumon could lead to either. But it's HIS choice. He never chose to exist, forced onto him by a man who couldn't face his grief, sentencing him an existence in hell. He never chose to reintegrate, imposed on him by a doctor who couldn't comprehend that innies could find meaning in life, even in suffering, despite history proving the power of human resilience. Because no one that has ever made a choice for him really seen him as one of them, as human. Gemma begs him to come home, but this is the only home he’s known. Home isn’t a place—it’s belonging. And now he chooses to stay, because, finally, he CAN. As for Helly, who meets Mark at the equator to see him one last time, who does she see? Gemma, behind the very same door she once tried so desperately to get through, that represented the freedom she would never have. A lifetime ago, she's have envied Gemma. A lifetime ago, she'd rather died than stay. But she's found meaning in life, and a will to live. That life is worth living despite it all, despite the system that oppresses them and despite the outies and even the audience saying their lives are too miserable to have meaning, to be worth living. So they run. In a place so vast, it feels like a continent. Once a prison, now something else. Retaking the spaces they once hated, transforming them into something new. And they very well might die. But if they die, it's a honeymoon ending— running, free and happy, in a place they weren't meant to be.

Bella Lake

I don’t think innie Mark intended to not go out the door with Gemma but he did have second thoughts. However, as soon as he saw Helly, he decided that it might be the last time he’ll ever see her again and like Helly said before that she wishes they had more time, innie Mark decided to take that time no matter how long it was. They are truly like teenagers, not thinking about anything else but being together one last time.

Helly R

tl;dr but I agree with your first sentence that I this would be a pretty perfect ending for the show. I honestly don't know if it's possible to top it, given how clear a statement it is on the shows themes.

Matt S

It actually wasn't when he got dragged by his legs. It's the very first time Drummond throws him against the wall, right after sucker punching him. You can see Adam is supposed to put his hands up to brace the impact but he doesn't get them up in time and his head just pingpongs off the wall.

Matt S

Right, outie Mark doesn't know Innie Mark is going to stay. Hell Innie Mark probably doesn't even know that yet.

Matt cooke

Love your reactions , I’m 100 percent behind innie mark here, he got Gemma out , didn’t want to die and as helly said , they just wanted more time , my ideal end goal is innie mark and helly together in the birthing suite weekends and mark and Gemma in the week

Matt cooke

Also you are the second reactor of about thirty I’ve seen that gets outie mark is lying to his innie and I kinda love ya for that, it’s missed so often , for me it’s clear as mud , so thank you, if you don’t get that then the rest of the episode has a different feel

Ruby Nieto

Great comments! I always read them all after watching the vid. I didn’t realize the vid was 1:40:14 until I checked half way thru it! It was all worth it! I kept staring at the “share your thoughts” box, but my brain 🧠 is still processing the final events. As for many, the first and only thing that came to mind was that Mark S was choosing to fight for his survival and those he loves. What a show! Thank you Claudie!

Jennyjoy

Oh, thank you! I saw the interview and when he talked about bracing his hands for impact I thought that was what he was talking about, I didn't know that!

Mr. Seb

The switch between Blue and Red, Convo with IMark and oMark.... So brilliant

ClaudieTV

You're more than welcome Ruby! :)

Laura B

Of course she put up a better fight than Mark... she's freakin' Brienne of Tarth!

Laura B

Oh I LOVE your point about Orpheus and Eurydice -- that's so on point!

Robert Northrop

Dan Erickson was asked if he envisions a happy ending for both innies and outies, and he said that it will be complicated and difficult but that he does see a path to get there. I don't think that the intention is to make it a zero sum game, but it might feel that way for awhile.

Robert Northrop

Mark Scout had no intention to say goodbye to Gemma. He was planning on leaving with her. Though I imagine he's suspect that his innie might not leave. I've heard that the tension between the innie and outie will be a major plot point for season 3. I personally feel that Mark will be forced to complete reintegration or else be in a potentially fatal partial state where is consciousness fractures.

Meri2700

I'm really pissed off. As I said in the previous episode, I understand that Innie Mark also wants and deserves happiness, but "running away" with Helly isn't the solution. I think Outtie Mark wouldn't abandon his Innie and would help find a solution. But I understand this is necessary for a third season. By the way, Milchick must have studied something related to art; this guy dances beautifully lol (Seriously, I'm so freaking mad at Innie Mark X'D at least he saved Gemma... Sorry, I can't help it, it really annoyed me :V).
