Below is a brief breakdown of some things that have been going on in my life recently, so do please give it a read.

Please do comment/DM any questions you may have regarding any of this.

Anyway, enjoy the chapter, and as always, thank you for your continued support.

Lee

Long story short, I have been in talks/negotiations with a very big publishing company for months about publishing some of my original works and the contract offered had to be signed on the Friday just gone.  However, there were many terms/details that I wasn't happy with.

1. I would no longer be able to publish fanfiction in any form on any website, even my personal one with immediate effect.

2. I would have to delete all current stories and profiles pertaining to any work that could be considered fanfiction.

3. All posting on patreon including podcasts and original work would have to be vetted by the publishing company before being published.

4. The publishing company would receive a considerable percentage of my patreon earnings along with money made from sales of my books.

5. The discord server would be allowed remain active, but it would be heavily regulated/ changed to tie in with the restrictive views of the publishing company.

6. I would be unable to create contracts/deals with potential sponsors, but would be given a stipend from current companies the publisher is affiliated with for promoting them through the podcast and hosting their ads on my website.

There were many other facets discussed during the negotiations but these are the key points that would have affected you all here.  I explained this to those on the call on Friday and explained my decision.  As you can see by the fact I released chapters today, I decided against signing this contract.

To me, it felt as though I would be being very disloyal to all of you here, my patrons, and those on FF.NET to do so.  Its each of you that have gotten me where I am today, and to me, that is much more important than selling out for any amount of money they were willing to offer me.

Not only that, I would have been very disloyal to myself and my own morals, so I will continue as I am.  I will take the self-publishing route in the near future, and I just wanted to thank you all for being a part of the community.

To my patrons, I wouldn't be able to do what I am without all of you.

Anyway, that is a very long message and I apologise for that.

Damn. I'm sorry that you had to pass up an opportunity, but deeply touched that you felt strongly enough about your readers to do so. I've never been happier to be a patron, and I'll continue to be here as long as you're writing.

Iñaki Sañudo

That was a very tough call to make, but I’m grateful that you decided to stay with us even in the face of a great opportunity like that. Keep up the good work, thank you

Franco Delosangeles

Thank you for choosing us! Love your work and want to state that you have me as a patron for as long as you allow us to!

Brenin Llwyd

Thank you for explaining and hosting the call. I have to ask: was the potential dollar amount stupid amazing? Because it seemed like a lot of restrictions on what you could and couldn’t do.

Ross

Huge decision for yourself to make but I can't thank you enough for doing what you did. Your work means a huge deal to lots of people and seeing it disappear from online would have been very disheartening. Seeing your original work will be fantastic and I really hope you work out how to present it best soon! Keep up the amazing work Lee, thank you!

Ondrej Mišo

Big respect, mate. I dont think many people would decide the same way you did. Obviously I have no idea how writer contracts go but those things didnt seem fair. Thank you for all your work and thanks for picking us HP weirdos over being a published author.

Err hello

No need for apologies. Mad respect though. Great chapter btw.

The money was very good, but I wouldn't sell myself or you guys out for any amount. It would be a poor way to repay all if you and I'd feel very shitty for doing something like that

(Also, if you want this kinds of new early in the future: join Lee's public discord server 😉)

Thank you.. I think you might be able to find a better company. It feels like they were trying to get absolute control over you which is always a red flag for me.

Nathan H

You are such an inspiration if you weren't aware. I'm not someone who writes much of my own work, but in another area of my career, I declined a similar such deal that came with ludicrous pay but a wealth of restrictions. It wasn't an easy decision and I am glad you were able to find the answer you were happy or at least satisfied with.

Stinger554

I appreciate the candor with the message and am grateful for the explanation. Seems like this publishing company is rather ridiculous with its demands imo. Not making more FF makes sense but deleting all previously posted stuff is absurd. I'm not gonna start on the other stuff lol. Anyways thanks for your dedication and hard work.

Thor

Thank you for choosing us, Im really moved by that. Their demands seems pretty crazy.

Dude, that publishing company was either trying to fuck you or milk you. Why would they get a chunk of your patreon earnings?! That's insane. Also, you should 100% self publish. Your main audience in the 1,552 patrons here and your ff readers. No publishing company is going to help you tap into that market. With all the new books published every day when was the last time you saw a publishing company do anything to promote a book that wasn't a celeb autobiography?

Tony

I think that deal sounds very unethical, basically holding you over a barrel if you ask me, I know another fanfiction writer who has published his own original stuff now and he still does fanfiction and stuff (albeit he doesn't post often but I think that's because he's more focused on his original stuff.) I hope you find a publication that will give you a fair deal Lee!

sedition

Haven’t read the chapter but so excited that you had that opportunity. I respect your decision and appreciate the way you went though am sorry you had to decide between things the way the contract was set up. Was this the only publishing company path you saw? I’m really sad you had to delay your original works being published because of their stipulations that prevent you from publishing fanfiction and having autonomy over your brand and content

Revan

Huge respect for you thanks for sticking with us!

Joe McArdle

Thanks bud, I appreciate your writing and am glad to be caught up

Frybread boy

Great chapter! I’m always looking forward it to the release days and thank you for continuing it

Austin Truong

Lee…,you don’t know how touched I am by your integrity and loyalty. Your work has saved me in so many ways this pandemic. And to know that I am part of the generation that got to see you as you emerge into your own power as a writer as an author and as a person is inspiring to me. Thank you for sharing this level of transparency and honesty with us. I’ve never felt more respected as a fan. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you.

Saad Bin Zafar Mahmood

Really happy that you have continued writing fanfiction. Great chapter like always

Francis

Ngl I don’t know much about publishing and how that works but your patron earnings should be yours and yours alone I don’t know how they thought they could have any right to that. I have a lot of respect for what you have done for us by choosing to keep publishing!! I would of been gutted to see you go your probably my all time favourite author from fanfiction.net,

Eleets

Obviously I appreciate your decision and look forward to purchasing your published works when you make the announcement!

Steve Mccormick

That was a very enlightening chapter for the readers, for Arcturus, Dorea, Charlus, and William!

AlexanderR

Was there any reason why they wanted you to stop writing fanfiction and remove any existing stories? Obviously, we wouldn't know the business you're in, so maybe they have a good reason for that. I don't want to assume they're just dicks lol. If you could give your fans a heads up, they could always download the existing stories. I, as a fan, wouldn't want you to give up on opportunities coming your way. If you get the chance to sign a big deal, release your own original works, and so on, I wouldn't begrudge you discontinuing your stories and removing the older ones. Though I'd be curious to get an answer to that first question. Why would it possibly matter to them? Maybe the stories contain content that would be used against you? Putting any works they publish for you in question with the public? I honestly have no idea. In the meantime, I'm very glad to keep contributing to keep your wonderful works coming.

dabolts

“Tell that to your face” is one the most hysterical lines in recent fanfiction memory…

RC

As mentioned above, I admire your commitment and moral integrity to stick with your fans despite your offer. I can only imagine the difficulty of realizing the actuality of a publishing offer but dealing with the cost that comes with it. Kudos to you sir! Ive appreciated your work through the years and it truly would be a shame to see it all disappear. It really makes a reader wonder if this is fairly common since I have seen quite a few works vanish. Looking forward to your future compositions.

Asifur Rashid

Lee, I feel terrible that you had to decline such an amazing opportunity. I am sure most of your readers would not have held it against you if you chose to go with the publishing company. However, you have shown us all the kind of man you are by going with your conscience and staying loyal to your fanfiction readers. Your community has grown considerably and I can see it growing in the coming years. On a personal level, I am extremely glad that you will continue writing fanfiction.

Westeller

Morals and loyalty aside, the restrictions they sought to place on you were clearly both unnecessary and excessive. Agreeing to them would have been doing yourself a disservice as an author and as an individual. If you had any doubts about telling them to fuck off, they must have been offering a lot. If you ever do want to pursue a similar agreement, however, I think the world would be a slightly better place if you tacitly allowed someone to rehost your fanfiction work (out of your control and thus not in violation of any contract - presumably). Though I think we'd all prefer you continued writing more, preserving what you've created so far shouldn't be impossible, or even difficult.

Sunny

Ah the beginning of Charlus and Dorea. I hope that they get together sooner. Also, I would like to say that we as readers greatly appreciate that you continue to write your original stories, as we look forward to the 100+ ideas that you have. Thanks again!
