Serious question would something like this be helpful for developing countries or are they basically going straight to smart phones or have the speed and capability beyond this era of mobile computing in the west?

You could test using a palm pilot tx that has wifi and use one of the browsers that supports WAP. Or maybe Psion Series 5mx with some sort of serial internet bridge or compact flash wifi card.

Some of the later Nokia phones with Symbian OS had wifi as well and wap browsers.

If you can find a Series 80 Nokia communicator (9300i/9500) that supports WAP and WiFi. And has a lovely big internal screen!

I think the Nokia N95 supported WAP, and it definitely supported wifi!

I think a lot of low cost devices today either run older Android or something like KaiOS, which all support more modern web than WAP

bob

blazer on palm OS supports WAP Although it also supports HTML, so its not WAP only
