Part 10: In The Middle Of The Night | When It Starts to Mean Something

The room was dark. Quiet. The kind of stillness that made your thoughts echo louder.

My ankle throbbed beneath the blanket. A dull ache that had settled in like it planned to stay. I shifted once, winced, and then gave up. The fan whirred gently above me. A shadow moved on the ceiling.

I should have been asleep. But my body wouldn’t settle. All I could think about was what happened earlier. The way Theo’s fingers brushed mine when he handed me the water. The way he didn’t look back when he left the room, as if he already knew he’d done enough.

Except he hadn’t really left. He was still here.

That part kept looping in my head. Over and over. A week ago he couldn’t even meet my eyes. Now he was helping me into bed, feeding me pills, ordering me food like we were something. Like he cared.

But he didn’t. Right?

I sighed softly and pushed the covers off. My throat was dry. I needed water. And I didn’t want to wake Min up to get it. I could manage. Carefully, I swung my good leg over the edge of the bed and lowered it to the floor. The second my sprained ankle shifted, pain flared up again. I gritted my teeth and held onto the edge of the mattress.

One step. I just needed to reach the kitchen.

The hallway light was dim, just enough to see outlines. I limped forward, favoring one leg, dragging the other slightly. The pain in my ankle pulsed with every shift. I leaned on the wall briefly, steadied myself, then pushed forward again.

But just as I reached the end of the hallway, my balance gave out. My body tilted sideways. My hand slipped off the wall. I stumbled, tried to catch myself, but my legs gave in completely. I crumpled down; not like before when I sprained it, not with a sharp jolt but this time, I just couldn’t move. My limbs felt too weak. I tried to push myself up, once, twice. Nothing. My muscles wouldn’t cooperate.

And then I must have made a noise. A thud. A breath too loud.

Because a door creaked open behind me.

Footsteps.

“Theo?” I managed, my voice small.

He stepped into the hallway fast. “Hey. Hey Troy...what are you doing?” His tone wasn’t angry. Just alarmed. Half-asleep, but fully awake now.

He rushed over and crouched beside me without hesitation. One arm slipped under mine, the other steadying my waist. “Come on. I’ve got you,” he said, gently hooking my arm around his shoulder.

His body was warm, solid against mine. I leaned into him without thinking. My chest pressed against his side. His hand gripped my forearm, the other braced around my back as he helped lift me upright.“I just needed water,” I muttered, breath shallow.Theo didn’t say anything right away. He just adjusted his grip and started guiding me gently back toward my room. His arm stayed firm around me, steady. I felt every bit of contact, from the side of his torso brushing mine to the quiet control in his hands. “You should’ve texted me,” he finally said, voice low but not scolding. “Or called. I would’ve come.”

I didn’t know what to say to that. I just let him lead me to the bed.

He helped me sit down, then eased me back until I was lying against the pillow. Carefully. Like he’d done it before. Well, he had.

A moment later, he crossed the room, picked up a water bottle from the kitchen, and came back. He set it down on the side table.“Here,” he said softly. “This should help you through the night.”

I looked up at him in the dim light. His face was calm, unreadable again, but his eyes lingered longer than they had to.

He started to turn away.

But before he could go, I reached out and caught his hand.

“Theo,” I said, barely above a whisper. He turned back. His face was half in shadow, eyes unreadable. My fingers were still wrapped around his hand, warm against mine. I should have let go. I didn’t.

I opened my mouth to say something; I don’t know what but I knew I didn't want him to leave this time.He didn’t ask. He just stood there. Looking at me like he was waiting.

And then, slowly, he sat down on the edge of the bed. The mattress dipped under his weight. His leg brushed mine lightly through the blanket. We were so close I could feel his breath. Neither of us moved.

My heart kicked harder in my chest.

“I don’t know what this is,” I said, finally. “But I don’t want you to leave.”For a second, he didn’t move. He just looked at me;his face still unreadable, but softer now, like something behind his eyes had shifted. His hand was still in mine. I wasn’t sure if I was holding him or he was holding me.

Theo leaned in just slightly. Barely enough for me to notice. Then a little more.

My breath caught. My heart felt like it was thudding straight into my throat.

He didn’t rush it. He paused when he was close, eyes flicking down to my lips, then back up again. I could feel the warmth of him, the steadiness of his breath, the hesitation. Then I felt it shift. His breath hitched, deeper now, less steady. His face was inches from mine. His eyes flicked to my mouth, then back to my eyes again. “Troy…” he whispered, voice low, thick with something unspoken.

My chest rose once, shakily.

“Kiss me,” I said, barely audible. “Please.”For a heartbeat, nothing happened.

Then his hand lifted; slow, unsure and cupped the side of my face. His thumb brushed gently along my jaw. And when he leaned in, it was like the whole room exhaled. His lips met mine softly. Carefully. Like he was still afraid I might change my mind.

But I didn’t.

I leaned into it.

The kiss was slow. Barely parted mouths, a warm press of lips, a pause. Then another..deeper this time. I felt him breathe into me. Felt the way his thumb slid to my cheekbone like he needed to memorize the shape of it. His other hand steadied against my blanket-covered thigh, anchoring himself there.

My fingers gripped his wrist lightly. It wasn’t like the kiss I’d had with Luke, behind the shed. Or the one hidden behind a tree when no one was looking. Those were fast, nervous. Fleeting things made of fear and adrenaline.

But Theo kissed me like he wasn’t afraid of being seen with me. Like if Min walked in right now, he wouldn’t pull away. He’d just hold my face a little closer.

His lips lingered. Not urgent or asking for more, they were just there; soft and steady. With me. Like he meant it. Like he wasn’t hiding. Like he didn’t care who knew. And maybe that was what made something twist in my chest...not fear, not nerves, but something quieter. The terrifying ache that he actually meant it.

Then, just as slowly, he pulled away. His forehead rested against mine for half a second longer. Then he pressed a kiss to my cheek...feather-light, almost reverent and stood up.

“Goodnight, Troy,” he said, voice quiet, barely more than a breath. And then he walked off.

I stayed still, staring at the ceiling, lips tingling, heart racing. I wasn’t even sure what had just happened. Not really. But my body felt warm all over, like he’d left something behind, a touch I could still feel even after he’d gone.I smiled to myself, stupid and quiet in the dark. There were butterflies in my stomach, the kind that made me feel like a teenager all over again. My lips still tingled from his. My chest felt light and heavy at the same time. Maybe it did mean something. Maybe it was more than just a kiss. Maybe he wasn’t just being kind or careful or soft with me because he had to be. Maybe it was something else. First off I love this story so much, next it is about time they kissed and wow what a kiss telling so much, last I can not wait to see where this leads to next. These guys are so perfect together I am eager to read more. Thank you Troy

Frank

I agree with J!! and yeah, what a kiss they had--I felt it in my toes!

Devin

Gosh I hope Troy isn’t feeling more than what’s there. The kiss sounded sweet, not passionate. No tongue, just nice. I hope Troy isn’t reading more into things that Theo is doing be simply be kind. This could be another disaster. Unless Theo gives a sign or makes a direct move, I would be very cautious about feelings.
