All characters depicted in this story are fictional and 18 years of age or older. Everything portrayed is safe, sane, and consensual. This chapter focuses a bit more on Troy’s thoughts and perspective

The drive home after the picnic was quiet in the best way. Min was half-asleep against Yuki’s shoulder in the backseat, Theo hummed along to the radio up front, and I just let myself sink into the stillness. My body ached pleasantly from the hike, the smell of grass and sweat still clinging to my clothes, but my chest felt impossibly light.

It hit me then.... for the first time in a long time, I wasn’t running from anything.

When I’d boarded that plane to the UK, heart still raw from the breakup, I thought the best I could hope for was distraction. Maybe a degree, maybe a few surface friendships. Not this. Not a flat that felt like home. Not friends who felt like family. And definitely not Theo; the boy who’d once barely looked my way now reaching over at red lights just to squeeze my knee.

We tumbled back into the flat around late evening, sweaty and sun-tired, and collapsed in a heap. Yuki demanded tea, Min fumbled with the kettle, Theo raided the fridge for leftover snacks, and I just sat on the arm of the sofa, laughing at all of them. It was so ordinary it almost startled me.

This was the new normal. And I liked it.________________

The days after the hike blurred into something steady. Classes filled the afternoons, deadlines nipped at us, but we always found ways to fold into each other’s routines. We studied, we cooked, we fought over whose turn it was to do the dishes. Yuki dragged us into movie nights, Min got obsessed with a new video game, and Theo disappeared for hours into football practice, throwing himself into it until he came back sweat-soaked and grinning. Somewhere in all that, he became a rhythm in my day without me even realizing it..He became a rhythm in my day without me even realizing it. He’d knock on my door just to ask if I wanted to hit the gym with him, or come watch a bit of football practice after class. He’d hand me a fork when he caught me eyeing whatever he was eating. He’d fall asleep on the sofa during late-night Netflix, and I’d find myself covering him with a blanket before bed.

And then there were the softer things. The kind of things I hadn’t let myself imagine back when Luke was all I knew. Theo brushing his thumb over my jaw when he kissed me good morning. Theo grinning like a kid when I cheered too loudly at his bowling strike.

I didn’t realize how much I’d been holding my breath until now, finally letting it out. Finally existing in something that felt like it could last.

It was almost funny; the way Min and Yuki’s long-term comfort sat next to Theo and me still discovering each other. Where they bickered like an old married couple, we tiptoed around new habits, new quirks. But it worked. Min would roll his eyes when Yuki got overly sentimental, and I’d shoot Theo a glance that made him snort into his drink.

---------------One evening, after a grocery run that turned into an accidental double date, Theo and I carried the bags back up the stairs while Min and Yuki argued over whether to make curry or pasta.

“Bet they’ll end up ordering takeout,” Theo muttered under his breath, bumping my shoulder with his.

“They always do,” I grinned.

It was stupid, but that small, private joke between us felt better than half the grand gestures I’d lived through before. The tiny, unremarkable details of life with Theo became their own kind of intimacy.

Nights were my favorite. When the flat finally quieted, when Yuki’s laughter faded behind his door, when Min’s game controller clicked softer and softer until silence took over. That’s when Theo and I would sneak into my room or his, kiss until our mouths were sore, then lie tangled together whispering about nothing.

Sometimes it was dreams about travel. Sometimes it was stupid questions like which Pokémon would win in a fight. Sometimes it was heavier...about family, about fears, about what we thought we wanted next.

And sometimes, when his voice grew heavy with sleep and his hand slowed on my back, I’d just listen. To the rhythm of his breathing. To the solid weight of him against me. To the fact that he was here, and so was I, and we weren’t pretending anymore.

I’d been in a relationship before. But this felt different. Not a high I knew would crash, not a secret I had to protect. Not a love built on trying to fix something broken.

With Theo, it wasn’t about survival. It was about being. About finally stepping into a version of myself that didn’t have to keep looking over his shoulder.

I wasn’t naïve; I knew life had a way of twisting when you least expected it. But for the first time, I believed in the possibility of stability.

Maybe even happiness.-----------------

One evening, we were sprawled across the sofa after dinner, the four of us. Min and Yuki were bickering about some show they both pretended not to be addicted to, Theo was stretched out beside me with his arm behind my shoulders, and I just… smiled.

Because this was it. This was the thing I thought I’d never get: a life that didn’t feel temporary, or secret, or like it was waiting to fall apart.

Theo glanced at me, catching the stupid grin on my face.“What?” he whispered.

“Nothing,” I murmured, leaning into him. “Just… happy.”

His lips curved, soft and knowing, and he kissed my forehead before turning back to the TV.

Later that night, after Min and Yuki disappeared into their room, Theo and I slipped into mine. We kissed lazily, more tired than desperate, and ended up tangled together under the sheets. His breath warmed the back of my neck as he drifted off.

I should’ve gone to sleep too. But I lay there awake, staring at the ceiling, listening to his heartbeat at my back.

All of a sudden, my phone buzzed on the nightstand.

I reached for it carefully, not wanting to wake him. A single new message lit up the screen.

From Luke.

I can’t stop thinking about you Troy. Please, just talk to me.

My chest tightened, the room suddenly too small, too warm. I turned the phone face down on the nightstand, slid back into Theo’s arms, and forced myself to close my eyes.

But I couldn’t sleep the entire night.-----------------Everything Meant Nothing | Part 19: Cracks of Doubt

I bloody knew that bastard would pop up sooner or later

Josh

Just when things are starting to settle in Luke makes his grand appearance. Sorry, but I think Theo is 100% a better fit for Troy than Luke will ever be. At least he doesn’t have to be a secret when he is with Theo. This story just took a really interesting turn.

robert

Troy needs to chose Theo as his partner and let Luke go !

But as a writer, I’m guessing you love to stir the pot. I want a happy ending (you can read into that any way you wish 😂) damnit!

Devin

It’s time to tell Luke you have a boyfriend now and the relationship is going really well.
