Author’s Note: This part of the story is written from Damian's point of view.

The palace halls whispered secrets I had long forgotten, their stone walls echoing with footsteps that seemed to mock my return. Five years in the wilds of the northern border had reshaped me into a man who trusted shadows more than light, a soldier who had learned to sleep with one eye open and his heart locked away. The opulence of Corwin felt like a distant memory reborn, the polished marble floors reflecting faces I once knew, but now they looked at me with curiosity laced with wariness. I walked among them as Royal Confidant, a title bestowed by the king himself, yet exile's mark clung to me like frost on steel. My skin bore new scars from raiders' blades and bitter winds, my hair threaded with silver that had not been there when I left. But the deepest wounds were invisible, carved into my soul by isolation, by nights spent staring at the stars and whispering Elias's name to the void, wondering if he still whispered mine.

Adjusting to court life was like slipping into armor rusted by time. The feasts overwhelmed me with their abundance, platters of spiced meats and honeyed fruits that turned to ash in my mouth when I caught sight of him across the table. Elias, my king, my love, my prince. He sat at the head, the crown absent but his presence commanding, his eyes finding mine in stolen moments that sent heat coiling through me. During council sessions, as ministers debated grain supplies and border pacts, I advised with the knowledge forged in exile's forge, my voice steady as I spoke of the north's harsh realities. "The people there fight not for gold, but for hope," I said once, feeling his gaze on me like a touch. Publicly we were king and confidant, but privately the air between us crackled with unspoken longing, a tension that built like a storm on the horizon.

Flashbacks haunted me in quiet hours. The outpost had been a brutal teacher, isolation my constant companion. Battles with raiders left comrades fallen in the snow, their blood freezing before it could stain the ground. Nights alone in a stone cell, the wind howling like lost souls, I would close my eyes and remember Elias; the way his body arched beneath me that last night, his moans filling the room as I thrust into him, slow and deep, spilling inside him with a groan that echoed my breaking heart. Those memories had kept me alive, but they had also taught me fear. Fear of losing him again to politics, to the crown's demands, to the whispers that could unravel everything. "I fear losing you again to politics," I confessed to him one evening in a shadowed alcove, my hand brushing his under the guise of handing him a scroll. His fingers lingered, warm and reassuring, but the pull back came from me, a little voice whispering caution even as my body ached for more.

The tension was exquisite torture. Stolen glances across crowded halls, his eyes dark with promise, sending a rush of heat through me that I had to mask with a cough or a shift in stance. During a feast, as minstrels played soft melodies, his foot brushed mine under the table, deliberate and teasing, and I nearly groaned aloud, my cock stirring at the contact. In the gardens, under the guise of discussing northern defenses, his hand grazed my arm, fingers trailing fire along my skin. "Soon," he whispered, his breath hot against my ear, and I had to step back, heart pounding, justifying the restraint with a murmur of "We must wait, my love. The court still watches."

Elias threw himself into his rule with a passion that inspired and terrified me. He enacted reforms with mercy as his guiding light, pardoning unjust exiles who had languished in the shadows for too long, inspired by the stories I shared of men broken by banishment. "This is for you," he said one night in his study, sealing a decree that would free dozens from the north's grip. "For us." I advised him publicly, my voice carrying the weight of experience as I spoke of how such mercy would bind the borders stronger than any wall. The ministers listened, nodding as Elias led with a blend of strength and compassion that made the realm flourish. Trade routes opened wider, alliances deepened, and the whispers about the new king's softness turned to praise for his wisdom.

Amara, the queen, supported it all with quiet grace. I had watched her from afar during my early days back, wary of the woman who shared his title, but she proved an ally in ways I had not anticipated.

One afternoon, as I waited outside the solar for a private audience with Elias, she emerged, her gown flowing like liquid gold. She paused, meeting my eyes with a knowing smile. "He has waited a long time for you," she said softly. "Do not let fear steal what mercy has given back." Her words lingered, a reminder that love's web in this palace was more intricate than I had known.

Emotionally, the depth between Elias and me resurfaced like a river thawing after winter. I opened up to him in fragments, late at night in hidden corners where no ears could listen. "Exile scarred me," I confessed one evening, his hand on my chest as we stood in the shadow of a tapestry. "Five years in the wilds broke my trust in crowns, in promises. I fear the court won't destroy us." Elias pulled me closer, his lips brushing mine in a kiss that was soft and reassuring. "My rule begins with mercy…for you, for us," he vowed, his voice a balm that soothed the raw edges of my soul. "I will prove it to you every day."

Amara's encouragement came subtly but powerfully. I overheard her speaking to Elias in the gardens one day, her voice carrying on the breeze as I stood guard nearby. "Thorne's loss taught me that love endures in memory," she said, her tone laced with quiet sorrow. "Let yours live, Elias. You have earned it." It was a moment of vulnerability that humanized her, a queen who had borne her own pains with grace.

The tension built to a fever pitch. Stolen glances turned to brushes of hands that lingered too long, sending sparks through me. In a deserted corridor after council, his fingers grazed my thigh under the table's cover, and I had to bite back a moan, my cock hardening instantly at the contact. Longing wove through every interaction, a romantic undercurrent that made the air thick with promise. I dreamed of him nightly, waking hard and aching, remembering the way he had tasted, the way his body had clenched around me during those secret meetings years ago. "My king, my love, my prince," I whispered to the dark, the titles a litany of devotion that had never faded.

Finally, the dam broke. That evening, as spring's warmth began to melt the last snow, Elias summoned me to his chambers. The door closed behind me with a soft click, and he was there, waiting in a silk robe that clung to his form like a lover's caress, the deep crimson fabric pooling at his feet. Firelight danced across his skin, highlighting the planes of his chest, the curve of his neck. He looked every inch the king, commanding and beautiful, yet his eyes held the vulnerability of the prince I had first loved.

"Damian," he said, voice low and inviting. "Come to me."

I crossed the room, pulling him into my arms. The kiss was deep, romantic, a slow exploration that spoke of years waited, of love that had burned steadily through darkness. My hands slid beneath his robe, feeling the warmth of his skin, the steady beat of his heart. He moaned softly, pressing against me, his hardness evident through the silk.

We moved to the bed, the robe falling away to reveal him fully, glorious in the firelight. The silk whispered to the floor like a sigh of surrender, pooling at his feet in a crimson wave that left him bare before me, every inch of his skin bathed in the hearth's golden glow. His body was as I remembered, yet marked by the years…lean muscle honed by rule's demands, the faint scar from a childhood fall tracing his rib, his cock already hard and curving toward me, flushed with need. I laid him down gently, the mattress yielding beneath his weight as if welcoming him home, and I followed, my mouth trailing kisses down his throat, savoring the pulse that leaped under my lips like a secret rhythm only I knew.

His skin tasted of salt and warmth, a flavor etched into my soul from nights when exile had tried to erase him from me. I lingered at the hollow of his collarbone, tongue dipping into the divot as he sighed my name, "Damian," soft and reverent, a sound that sent heat pooling in my core. Lower still, my lips found his chest, the firm planes rising with each quickened breath. I circled one nipple with my tongue, teasing it to a peak before drawing it into my mouth, sucking gently at first, then harder, teeth grazing just enough to make him arch off the bed with a gasp that echoed through me like thunder.

"Elias, my love," I murmured against his skin, voice thick with emotion that had simmered for five years, never dimmed, only deepened. "I have waited so long for you, my king." The words were a confession, a vow renewed in the quiet intimacy of this chamber, where the world outside ceased to exist. He pulled me up then, his hands framing my face, kissing me again with a hunger that matched my own, tongues dancing in a slow, sensual rhythm that spoke of all the nights we had lost and the ones we would reclaim.

His fingers explored my body with the same reverence, tracing the scars exile had given me, each touch a balm to wounds that had never fully healed. "Show me," he whispered, his breath hot against my ear, sending shivers down my spine. "Show me you never forgot."

I rose then, standing before him, the firelight casting long shadows across the room. My hands moved to my tunic, fingers undoing the laces with deliberate slowness, letting the fabric part to reveal my chest, the muscles tensed with restraint and desire. His eyes darkened, drinking me in as I shrugged it off, letting it fall to join his robe on the floor. The air was cool against my skin, but his gaze burned, a faint promise of being together at last hanging between us like the sweetest torment. My trousers followed, sliding down my hips, freeing my cock to stand proud and aching for him, the years of longing faintly etched in every vein, every pulse that beat for this moment alone.

Wonderful job Troy. Finally they have rekindled the needed trust and they will return to being lovers, Amara is amazing telling them both to embrace it

I am love, love, loving this story so much! Great to see Elias and Damian reunited and I really like how the character of Amara has developed. However, one issue that hasn't been dealt with: the need for an heir. I am hoping you will reslove this somehow in the next few chapters but in a court like the one you have depicted - medieval / early modern - the pressure on Elias and even more Amara to produce an heir would have been immense, especially as it does not appear that Elias has a brotehr (unless you have him stashed away somewhere). A 5-year marriage between adult king and queen without producing a child would have been scandalous. Elias' ministers would be demanding something be done. Just a thought.

Hi Michael, thank you so much for such a thoughtful and generous comment. I’m really glad you’re enjoying the series and that Elias, Damian, and Amara are all landing for you as characters. You’re absolutely right about the historical pressure for an heir in a medieval or early modern court. In a more traditional political drama, that tension would be unavoidable and, honestly, a fascinating plot thread. I did think about it while outlining the story. In the end, though, I chose not to foreground the heir issue because I wanted the emotional core of the series to stay focused on desire, reunion, and intimacy rather than dynastic politics. With Part 25 serving as the ending, I felt that introducing or fully unpacking the heir question that late might pull attention away from the resolution I was aiming for. It’s one of those areas where historical realism and the expectations of gay erotica don’t always align cleanly. That said, your point is completely valid, and in another version of this world, it would have made for a strong and very believable conflict. I really appreciate you raising it and engaging with the story on that level. It means a lot.

What a scene to behold! Elias and Damian together again in the King's bed. I am surprised and happy at Amara's acceptance of Elias' love for Damian, but she might be feeling a bit lonely at night, however, she knew from the beginning that she would be alone in this marriage to Elias.

a soldier who had learned to sleep with one eye open and his heart locked away. This line made me stop and think, it's not only soldier's, but every gay/bi man.

Okay... so this is long, and a touch dramatic, so skip it if it's too much. That line— “Show me you never forgot”—honestly just wrecked me. It’s like someone finally reached back through all the years and hit a nerve I’ve been trying to keep numb for two decades. I have a life I love. My wife and my kids are my whole world, and I’m 100% devoted to them. But the heart is a complicated place, and in the deepest part of mine, there’s a fire for another man – a good-looking, loving, passionate, intelligent, funny man - that never really went out. Twenty-something years ago, the world just didn't know how to make space for us. Because of the expectations and the pressure from our high-profile families, we were warned repeatedly, then suddenly ripped apart. I was forcibly stationed at this "northern border" of a traditional life, long before I was ever ready or willing to leave his side. Reading about Damian and Elias brought it all back—not like some faded memory, but as this actual, physical ache. I can still feel it in my bones. I’m still carrying those "invisible wounds" from a love that was stolen because the world wasn't ready for us yet. Letting myself remember him like this isn't a betrayal of the life I have now; it’s just the truth of who I was and the love that made me who I am. Even after all this time, his name still feels like home. I know I’m never going to get my "return to the palace." I’m going to stay at this border post and keep doing my duty with love and integrity. But in the quiet hours, when I’m alone with my thoughts, I close my eyes, and I’m right back there with him. This chapter reminded me that a love that deep doesn't just vanish. Troy, thank you for writing the reunion I only get to have in my dreams. It’s a comfort to know that even if we were forced into different lives, the part of me that belonged – no, belongs - to him is still alive, still burning, and still his. This chapter didn't make me love my long-time spouse any less—it simply validated the fact that one love doesn’t have to erase another. Thank you for giving a voice to those of us who are loyal to our present but also belong to our past. It’s a comfort to know that a love like that never truly dies; it just waits, perfectly preserved, in the quietest part of the soul.

Frank

Thank you, Bo for your beautiful response to this chapter. I can relate to much of what you wrote, especially your last sentence.
