Episode 19: Jake In Paris

“Troy!!!”

My heart stopped for a second.

Jake was here.

In Paris.

For my birthday.

And Dylan had known the whole time.

Jake rushed forward and pulled me into a crushing hug. I laughed in pure shock, hugging him back tightly, my brain still trying to catch up. His arms felt stronger than I remembered, solid and warm, the kind of hug that reminded me how much I had missed my best friend.

“Jake… what the hell? You are actually here?” I said, voice cracking with surprise and joy.

Beside him stood a pretty girl with warm eyes and a bright smile. I had no idea who she was, but she was looking at me like she already knew everything about me. She stepped forward and hugged me too, quick and friendly.

“It is so nice to finally meet you, Troy. Jake has not stopped talking about you the entire flight.”

Becca came over and wrapped her arm around my shoulders, laughing. “I told you I had a surprise for you. These two showed up at my door an hour ago demanding to see you.”

I looked around the room, still stunned and happy, my mind spinning with the realization that Dylan had known everything. He had sent me here on purpose so I could walk straight into this surprise without suspecting a thing. The grocery bags, the detour, the way he had smiled at me… it all made sense now.

Jake grinned, slinging an arm around my shoulders. “So where is my asshole of a brother? I told him not to tell you we were coming, but I figured he would at least show by now.”

I laughed, still catching my breath, trying to keep my voice casual even though Dylan and I had just been kissing on the street minutes ago. “I have no clue. I just came back from a walk. He probably got held up somewhere.”

Jake raised an eyebrow but did not push it. “Typical. That guy is always late to everything. Anyway, happy birthday, man. We are staying for a few days and we are going to make this the best one yet.”

The girl, Stacey, smiled warmly. “Jake has been planning this for weeks. He wanted to surprise you properly.”

I nodded, still grinning, my heart full even as my mind started racing ahead. Jake and his girlfriend were here. In Paris. For my birthday. And Dylan had known the entire time. Which also meant the two of us were suddenly back to sneaking glances and acting casual whenever Jake was around, pretending there was nothing going on between us at all.

I had a feeling this birthday was going to be a very interesting one.

Becca clapped her hands together. “Alright, everyone sit. I have rosé chilling and some snacks. We are celebrating tonight.”

We all moved to the sofa and the small living room area. Jake flopped down heavily, pulling Stacey with him. I sat across from them, still trying to process everything. Becca disappeared into the kitchen.

Jake introduced the girl properly. “This is Stacey, by the way. My girlfriend. I wanted to tell you on our calls, but I thought it would be better face to face.”

I smiled at her. “It is really nice to meet you, Stacey. Jake has clearly been hiding the best parts of his life from me.”

She laughed and leaned into Jake’s side. “He talks about you constantly. I feel like I already know you.”I looked at Jake, really looked at him for the first time since the hug. He had changed. His arms were thicker, his shoulders broader, and there was a new confidence in the way he carried himself. I grinned and pointed at his biceps.

“What are those?”

Jake flexed both arms dramatically, showing off. “You mean these guns?”

I burst out laughing. “Holy shit, you actually listened to your brother for once.”

Jake laughed too, dropping the pose. “I finally listened to my brother’s advice and started hitting the gym hard. Who knew that asshole would be right about protein and all that shit?”

I smiled, but my mind flashed instantly to late nights with Dylan. The two of us tangled in his sheets, him eating a protein bar in bed and shoving one into my mouth with that cocky grin. “C’mon Spaghetti Noodle, we need some of that protein to go to your cute ass.” The memory made heat creep up my neck. I pushed it down quickly, trying to focus on the conversation.

Jake kept going, still grinning. “But I am happy he was on my ass telling me to lift. He kept saying I would get a girlfriend if I actually put in the work.”

Stacey smiled and nudged him playfully. “To be fair, I love you for you, not for your muscles.”

Jake giggled and kissed her cheek. “Sure babe, sure.”

Before I could reply, the door opened. Dylan walked in carrying a birthday cake box. My stomach did a little flip at the sight of him. He looked calm and composed, exactly like the Dylan who used to pretend nothing was happening between us back home.

Dylan glanced around the room, his eyes landing on Jake first. “What is that I hear? Did my little brother finally take my advice and admit I was right about something?”

Jake stood up and dapped him up with his other hand. “There he is. Nah, I was just telling everyone how much of an asshole you are.”

Dylan smirked, placing the cake on the coffee table near the sofa. He looked at me, voice neutral and casual, as if I was the same Troy from the basement a year ago. “Happy birthday, Troy.”I felt a small blush creep up my cheeks but played along perfectly. “Thanks, Dylan.”

Becca came back from the kitchen carrying a bottle of rosé and several glasses. She smiled at Dylan. “Hi Dylan. Nice of you to finally show up.”

Dylan looked at Becca and nodded politely. “Hi Becca.”

Becca poured the rosé and passed the glasses around. “To Troy’s birthday and surprise guests. This is going to be fun.”

We clinked glasses and took sips. The conversation flowed easily. Jake started telling stories about the flight and how Stacey had dragged him to every duty-free shop along the way. I kept glancing at Dylan across the coffee table, noticing how the black tee stretched tight across his pecs with every small movement. Dylan kept looking back at me, his eyes dark and hungry, like he wanted to fuck me right there in front of everyone and call it birthday sex.

Becca brought out plates and a knife for the cake. “Alright, birthday boy gets the first slice.”

Everyone started singing happy birthday, clapping and laughing as I blew out the candles. The vanilla cake smelled perfect, exactly the one I loved. I cut the first piece and looked at Dylan for a second.

“Thanks for the cake, Dylan.”

Dylan nodded once, sitting down in the chair opposite me. “No problem. Figured you would like the vanilla one.”

Jake raised an eyebrow, taking a big bite. “Wait, you two actually talk now? I thought you barely saw each other in Paris even though you live five minutes apart.”

I quickly jumped in, trying to keep the lie smooth. “We sometimes run into each other during morning walk or grocery runs. I must have mentioned I like vanilla during one of those.”

I looked at Dylan again. He gave me a small, almost imperceptible nod, his eyes soft for just a moment before he masked it. The cake was perfect, exactly the one I loved. He had remembered.

Jake took another big bite and groaned in approval. “Damn, this is good. My brother actually did something right for once.”

I smiled, the sweetness of the cake spreading across my tongue. Dylan leaned back in his chair, completely relaxed. “Yeah, I train clients all day. Do not really get time to hang out.”

The words hung in the air. We were keeping the “we barely talk” act going perfectly, but the tension between us was palpable. Every time our eyes met across the coffee table I felt the pull, the secret knowledge of what we had become in private. Dylan’s gaze lingered on me for a fraction of a second longer than it should have, and I had to look away before Jake noticed.

Becca brought out plates and a knife for the cake. “Alright, birthday boy gets the first slice. Dylan picked vanilla because he said it is your favorite.”

We kept the conversation going, laughing and catching up, but the tension between Dylan and me never faded. Every casual word, every polite smile, every time we avoided looking at each other for too long only made the secret burn hotter.

Becca poured more rosé and passed the glasses around while Jake launched into a story about how he had finally started taking Dylan’s old workout plans seriously. “I used to think my brother was just being an asshole sending me all those gym routines,” Jake said, flexing his arm dramatically. “But look at me now. I actually have muscles. Stacey keeps telling me I look like a different person.”

Stacey laughed and leaned into him, her hand resting on his thigh. “He does. I keep telling him that he should thank his big brother.”Dylan smirked from his chair across the coffee table, that cocky glint in his eyes. “Took you long enough. I have been telling you for years that protein and heavy lifting would fix that skinny frame of yours.”

Jake rolled his eyes but grinned. “Yeah yeah, Mr. Personal Trainer. You are still an asshole for bombarding me with those workout routines.”

The conversation flowed easily around the table, Jake and Stacey sharing stories about the flight and how they had planned the surprise for weeks. Becca kept refilling glasses and laughing at Jake’s jokes. Dylan stayed relaxed in his chair, joining in with the banter, but every time he looked at me across coffee table I felt the spark. We were playing the part perfectly, acting like distant acquaintances, but the tension was thick enough to cut with a knife.

After a while I felt a bit of cake icing on my pants from an earlier clumsy bite. “I am going to clean this off real quick,” I said, standing up. “Be right back.”I slipped into the small powder room and closed the door behind me. I had just started wiping the spot with a damp cloth when the door opened again. Dylan stepped inside, closing it quietly behind him. The space was tiny, forcing us close together. Before I could say anything he grabbed my waist and pulled me against him, kissing me hard and deep.

I gasped into his mouth, hands fisting in his shirt. “Dylan… Jake is right outside.”

He kissed me again, slower this time, possessive and hungry. “I know,” he murmured against my lips. “But I needed to wish you properly. Happy birthday, boyfriend.”

The word “boyfriend” sent a shiver through me. I pushed him gently, heart racing, but my body leaned into him anyway. “You are going to get us caught.”

Dylan smirked, eyes dark. “Just one more kiss.”

He kissed me one more time, quick and filthy, then pulled back with a satisfied look. We both took a second to steady our breathing before he slipped out first. I waited a few heartbeats, wiped the last of the icing off my pants, and returned to the living room like nothing had happened.

We rejoined the group and continued pretending. Becca suggested we all hang out tomorrow to celebrate my birthday properly, exploring Paris together. Stacey’s eyes lit up. “I cannot wait to see the city. Jake has been promising me this trip for a while now.”

Jake looked at Dylan. “No excuses, bro. You are joining us too. We’ve got to make this a proper group thing.”

Dylan nodded casually. “I’ll try my best.”

Jake then turned to me, grinning. “And I really want to meet the man who has got you so in love lately. You have been glowing in all those. Whoever he is, he must be something special.”

I felt my stomach tighten. Dylan’s gaze flicked to me for a fraction of a second before he looked away again. The tension between us crackled silently under the surface while we both kept smiling and nodding like nothing was wrong.Becca poured more rosé while Jake launched into another story. I kept smiling, laughing at the right moments, but every time my eyes met Dylan’s across the coffee table the air felt thicker. We were playing the part perfectly — distant acquaintances, barely talking — but the secret between us burned hotter than ever.

I had a feeling the next few days were going to test us more than either of us expected.

I’m sorry, my heart broke for Troy. The veil needs to come down and the truth needs to be spoken. I feel like it’s the 60’s and the truth can’t be revealed. His brother is going to be happy for them, but disappointed he wasn’t told sooner.

I love the reunion but the hiding is gonna prove difficult
