Episode 20: Happy Birthday, Noodle
The afternoon sun was warm on my skin as the five of us walked together along the Seine. Jake kept pointing at random landmarks like a kid on his first trip, Stacey laughed at every joke he made, and Becca stayed glued to my side, arm looped through mine. Dylan walked on my other side, close enough that our shoulders brushed every few steps. It felt surreal. My best friend from America was actually here in Paris for my birthday, along with his girlfriend, my sister, and the man I loved. I kept stealing glances at Dylan, still amazed that this was our life now. No more hiding. No more pretending we barely knew each other when other people were around. At least not when Jake was not looking.
Jake threw his arm around my shoulders and grinned. “This city is insane. How have you not sent me a million pictures of this river yet?”
I laughed. “I have. You just never reply to my texts.”
Stacey nudged him playfully. “He does that. He gets distracted by every shiny thing and forgets to answer.”
Becca squeezed my arm. “Troy has been too busy living his best Paris life to send pictures anyway. Between the patisserie job and all the videos he films, he barely has time to breathe.”
Dylan’s hand brushed mine for a second as we walked. He did not say anything, but the small touch sent a quiet thrill through me. We turned toward a beautiful bridge with a perfect view of the Eiffel Tower in the distance. I pulled out my phone and snapped a few quick shots for LifeInParis, the group posing naturally as I filmed a short clip.
“This is going in the next video,” I said, smiling at the camera. “Birthday walk with surprise guests.”
Jake flexed dramatically in the background. “Make sure you get my good side.”
We laughed and kept walking, the conversation flowing easily between all of us. Jake told stories about the flight and how Stacey had made him watch every Paris movie before they left. Becca teased him about finally having a girlfriend who could keep up with his energy. Dylan stayed mostly quiet but chimed in with dry, cocky comments that made everyone laugh. Every time his eyes met mine I felt that familiar spark, the secret knowledge that later tonight he would have me all to himself.
We stopped for a relaxed lunch at a small bistro overlooking the river. The food was simple and delicious, fresh salads, crusty bread, and chilled rosé. Jake kept asking questions about my life in Paris, how the patisserie job was going, and whether I missed home. I answered honestly, feeling lighter than I had in weeks. Dylan sat across from me, listening quietly, his foot occasionally brushing mine under the table in a way that made my pulse jump.
After lunch Becca clapped her hands together. “Dessert time. We are going to Troy’s patisserie. Madame Claire’s eclairs are legendary, and I have been begging him to bring some home for weeks.”
Stacey’s eyes lit up. “Yes please. I have heard so much about these eclairs.”
We made our way to the patisserie a few blocks away. The moment we stepped inside the familiar smell of fresh croissants and coffee wrapped around us. Madame Claire waved from behind the counter, her face lighting up when she saw me with the group.
“Troy! And you brought friends today!”
Becca immediately started ordering. “We need eclairs, croissants, and whatever else looks good. It’s Troy’s birthday and we are celebrating.”
I was laughing at something Jake said when the door opened again. Lucien walked in, looking devastatingly handsome in a crisp white shirt and tight blue pants. He carried a small gift bag in one hand. His face brightened the moment he saw me.
“Troy,” he said warmly, stepping closer. “I was hoping I might catch you here. I wanted to drop this off for your birthday.”
He pulled me into a gentle hug and kissed both my cheeks in that elegant way he always did. I hugged him back, feeling a quick pang of guilt but also gratitude for how smoothly our friendship had settled after our conversation.
Before I could say anything Jake’s eyes widened with excitement. He stepped forward immediately, assuming exactly what I had been dreading.
“So this is the boyfriend who’s got Troy glowing in all his videos,” Jake said, grinning as he shook Lucien’s hand enthusiastically. “I am Jake, Troy’s best friend from back home. He has been keeping you a secret, but I have been dying to meet the guy who swept him off his feet.”
Lucien blinked once, momentarily confused, but he recovered instantly with perfect charm. He smiled politely and shook Jake’s hand. “It’s nice to meet you, Jake. Troy has told me so much about you.”
Jake looked thrilled. “Really? Good things I hope. Troy, man, you have been holding out on me. This guy is clearly the reason you’ve been so happy lately.”
Stacey smiled warmly at Lucien. “It’s so nice to meet you. Jake has been talking about Troy’s mystery boyfriend the entire trip.”
Becca glanced between all of us, clearly enjoying the chaos but staying quiet. Dylan stood a little behind me, his expression calm on the surface, but I caught the quick flash of jealousy in his eyes when Lucien’s hand lingered on my shoulder.
I felt my stomach twist with guilt. Dragging Lucien into this lie to protect the secret from Jake felt wrong, but right now I had no choice. I forced a smile and played along.
Lucien handled it gracefully, his usual calm confidence making the moment feel natural. He chatted lightly with Jake and Stacey, answering questions about how we met with just enough polished detail to sound believable without giving away too much.
Stacey turned to Lucien with a bright smile. “We are heading out for Troy’s birthday dinner tonight. You should totally join us. It would be great to have the whole group together.”
Jake nodded enthusiastically. “Yeah man, come with us. We want to hear everything about you two. Troy has been keeping secrets from me for months.”
Lucien started to politely decline. “I would love to, but I have a meeting I cannot miss.”
Jake waved it off. “C’mon, it’s your boyfriend’s birthday. One meeting can wait.”
Lucien looked at me, a flicker of understanding in his eyes. I felt a rush of guilt for pulling him into this, but I also knew we needed to keep the act going. I smiled and nodded.
“Yeah, Lucien,” I said, trying to keep my voice light. “Join us. It would mean a lot.”
Lucien paused for a second, then smiled warmly. “Alright. I will rearrange a few things. I wouldn’t want to miss Troy’s birthday.”
The group cheered and started making plans for dinner. I felt the weight of the lie settle heavier in my chest as we left the patisserie and began walking toward the restaurant. Lucien walked beside me, charming and polite as always. Dylan stayed a few steps behind, quiet on the surface, but I could feel the tension radiating from him every time Jake asked Lucien another question about “us.”
This was supposed to be a simple birthday celebration. Instead it was turning into something far more complicated, and I had no idea how we were going to keep pretending for the rest of the night.
________The restaurant was a beautiful but relaxed place tucked along a quiet street not far from the Seine. Warm golden lighting spilled from inside, and the outdoor tables were filled with couples and small groups enjoying the evening air. We were seated at a long table near the back where the light was softer and the conversation could flow freely. I sat between Becca and Stacey while Jake took the spot across from me. Lucien sat next to Jake and Dylan ended up directly opposite me. The arrangement felt both perfect and dangerous at the same time.
The waiter brought menus and a bottle of chilled rosé. Jake immediately started ordering appetizers with enthusiasm while Stacey laughed at how excited he was about everything on the list. Becca kept stealing glances at me, her eyes sparkling with amusement at the whole situation.
Lucien leaned back in his chair, looking perfectly at ease in his white shirt. “This place has one of the best duck dishes in the area. I come here often when I need a quiet dinner.”
Jake’s eyes lit up. “So you two must have come here on dates, right? Tell us how you guys actually met. Troy has been so vague about it.”
I felt my stomach tighten. Lucien glanced at me for the briefest second, a calm understanding in his eyes, before he smiled smoothly and took the lead.
“It was quite simple actually,” Lucien said, his voice warm and polished. “I walked into the patisserie where Troy works one morning for my usual coffee. He was behind the counter arranging croissants and looking completely focused. I made a comment about how the city looked better through his eyes in his videos. We started talking and it just flowed from there. He has this way of seeing Paris that makes you fall in love with it all over again.”
Jake grinned, completely hooked. “That sounds exactly like Troy. He always had that artistic side even back home. So you watched his LifeInParis videos before you even met him?”
Lucien nodded, taking a sip of rosé. “I did. I found them charming and honest. When I realized the boy behind the camera worked at my favorite patisserie it felt like fate.”
Becca leaned forward with a playful smirk. “Fate or a very convenient coincidence? Come on, Lucien, you can tell us. Did you plan that first meeting?”
Lucien laughed softly, the sound rich and genuine. “I wish I could take credit for being that clever. No, it really was just good timing. Troy was kind enough to let me stay and chat while he worked. The rest happened naturally.”
Stacey sighed happily. “That is so romantic. Troy, you never told us any of this in your messages. You kept saying it was nothing serious.”
I forced a small smile and shrugged, trying to keep my voice light. “It started slow. I did not want to jinx it.”
Across the table Dylan’s eyes met mine. The look he gave me was lingering and heated, the kind that made my skin feel too tight. He said nothing, but the intensity in his gaze told me everything. He was jealous. He was trying to hide it, but I could see it in the way his jaw tightened and the way his fingers gripped the stem of his wine glass a little too firmly.
Jake kept the questions coming, completely unaware of the undercurrent at the table. “So what is the best thing about dating Troy? Because let me tell you, this guy is a handful. He used to steal my snacks and blame it on the dog when we were kids.”
Lucien chuckled and glanced at me again. “The best thing is how genuine he is. He does not try to be anyone else. When he films those videos he is just Troy, living in the moment. It’s refreshing. And he makes me laugh more than anyone I have met in a long time.”
Becca raised her glass with a teasing grin. “To Lucien for putting up with my brother’s chaos. And to my brother for finally finding someone who can keep up with him.”
Everyone laughed and clinked glasses. I joined in, but my eyes kept drifting back to Dylan. He was smiling politely, playing the part of the distant acquaintance perfectly, but every time our gazes locked the air between us crackled. I could feel the jealousy simmering under his calm surface, the same possessive energy that came out when we were alone. It made my pulse race even as I tried to focus on the conversation.
The food arrived in waves. Beautiful plates of duck, fresh salads, and perfectly cooked vegetables. The wine flowed easily and the laughter grew louder as the evening went on. Jake told stories about our high school days that had everyone in stitches. Stacey shared how she and Jake had met at a mutual friend’s party. Becca kept teasing Lucien about how calm and composed he seemed compared to the rest of us. Lucien handled every question with charm and humor, never missing a beat, never letting the act slip.
I kept stealing glances at Dylan. He would look back at me across the candles, eyes dark and full of everything we could not say out loud. The tension between us kept building, quiet and electric, hidden beneath the surface of the cheerful dinner.
As the plates were cleared and the last of the wine was poured, Becca raised her glass again.
“To Troy,” she said warmly. “Happy birthday, little brother. We are so glad you are here in Paris living your best life and that we could all be here to celebrate with you. And to new friends and old ones. May this year be even better than the last.”
Jake lifted his glass high. “To Troy! And to the man who finally got him to smile like that in his videos. Lucien, you are a legend.”
Stacey and Lucien joined in with warm smiles. “Happy birthday, Troy.”
Dylan raised his glass last, his voice steady but his eyes locked on mine with that intense, heated look that made my breath catch. “Happy birthday, Troy.”
The table erupted in cheers and clinking glasses. I smiled, feeling the warmth of the moment surround me even as the secret tension between Dylan and me continued to simmer underneath. The dinner had been perfect on the surface, full of laughter and love, but I knew the real celebration, the one only Dylan and I shared, was still waiting for me later tonight. We lingered over the last of the wine and dessert, the conversation growing softer and more relaxed as the evening stretched on. Jake kept telling stories from back home, Stacey laughed at every one of them, and Becca kept refilling glasses with that mischievous glint in her eyes. Lucien stayed charming and easygoing, fitting into the group as if he had always been there. I kept catching Dylan’s gaze across the table, those lingering looks that made my pulse quicken. He would give me a small nod or a brief smile, playing the part of the distant acquaintance perfectly, but I could see the heat behind his eyes.
Becca checked her watch and sighed happily. “This has been such a lovely evening. I think it is time we head back.”
Jake stretched his arms above his head. “Yeah, we should get going too. Stacey and I have an early start tomorrow to explore more of the city.”
Stacey nodded, smiling at everyone. “Thank you so much for letting us crash your birthday plans, Troy. It has been wonderful meeting everyone.”
Lucien stood up gracefully, adjusting his shirt. “It was a pleasure to spend the evening with all of you. Thank you for including me.”
As we gathered our things and stepped out into the cool night air, Jake turned to Lucien with a playful grin. “So, Lucien, are you taking Troy home to celebrate the night properly? It’s his birthday after all. You two should enjoy the rest of the evening together.”
Lucien smiled, calm and composed as always. “I would love to, but I have an early meeting with foreign clients in the morning. I should get some rest so I can be sharp for it.”
Jake and Stacey both booed lightly in unison, laughing. “You guys are acting like an old married couple already,” Jake teased. “Come on, it is Troy’s birthday. One late night will not hurt.”
Lucien chuckled softly, shaking his head. “Another time, I promise. Tonight I will leave Troy in good hands.”
He turned to me, his expression warm and kind. He leaned in and kissed both my cheeks gently, then handed me the small gift bag he had been carrying earlier. “This is from Jessica and me. Happy birthday, Troy. I hope you like it.”
I took the bag, feeling a quiet pang of guilt mixed with gratitude. “Thank you, Lucien. Really. For everything.”
He gave me one last soft smile, then turned and walked away down the street, looking back once with a small wave before disappearing around the corner. The group started walking toward Becca’s apartment, the evening air cool and pleasant around us. Jake kept his arm slung around Stacey’s shoulders while Becca walked beside me.. Dylan stayed close on my other side, his hand occasionally brushing mine when Jake wasn’t looking. The conversation stayed light and easy, everyone still buzzing from the dinner and the wine. Jake teased me about Lucien leaving early, and Stacey laughed along, saying she hoped they could all do something together again soon.
When we reached Becca’s building, Jake and Stacey stopped at the entrance to say their goodnights, hugging everyone before heading off toward their Airbnb. “See you tomorrow, birthday boy,” Jake called over his shoulder. “Don’t stay up too late.”
Becca hugged me tightly and winked at me. “I suppose you’ll be spending the time at Dylan’s apartment.”
I nodded and pretended to walk upstairs along with her as Jake and Stacey were still walking down the street. The moment they were out of sight I stopped on the first landing, heart beating fast. Becca waved and disappeared. The stairwell was dimly lit and quiet. I turned around just as Dylan stepped out of the shadows at the bottom of the stairs.
He moved quickly, cornering me against the wall with his body. One hand slid around my waist, pulling me flush against him while the other cupped the back of my neck. Before I could say anything his mouth was on mine, kissing me deeply, possessively, like he had been holding back the entire night. The gift bag from Lucien dangled from my fingers as I melted into the kiss, my free hand gripping his shirt.
Dylan pulled back just enough to speak against my lips, his voice low and commanding. “Where do you think you are going, noodle?”
I breathed hard, cheeks flushed. “I was pretending to go upstairs so Jake doesn’t suspect anything.”
He smirked, eyes dark with heat. “Good boy. But the night is not over yet. I have been waiting all evening to give you your real birthday present..”
I shivered at his words, my body reacting instantly to the promise in his voice. Dylan kissed me again, harder this time, his hand tightening on my waist as if he could not bear to let go even for a second. The stairwell felt small and intimate, the city quiet around us.
He finally pulled back, forehead resting against mine, breathing ragged. “Happy birthday, Troy. Now let’s go home so I can show you exactly how much I love you.”
I nodded, heart racing, the gift bag still in my hand and Dylan’s promise burning in my ears. The night was far from over.
And my heart raced at the thought of what waited for me the moment we walked through his door.
