The argument of the importance of reference rages on, reference is without a doubt one of the best ways to draw, the fact that some artists can intuitively just remember what something looks like and draw it will always stun me.I'll admit-- and its not something I wanted to admit because I was made to feel bad about it back in the day-- I've used my self as reference for art.I've used my own breasts, my own facial expressions, poses, and even pictures of my own high heels for reference. But a while back a former friend told me there was nothing worse than people who self reference, that its egotistical. I didn't particularly buy it, their mentality that is, but it's stuck with me.So I want to ask you guys what you think, does self referencing make you egotistical? Or does is it just the quickest way to get pictures of the exact poses you like? Please lemme know what you think cuz I'm interested in hearing what your perspective is on it.

Coming from a non artist perspective, I don't see any issue. It doesn't seem any better or worse to Google a pose reference than it does to just hop in front of the camera and go at it, at least as far as I'm concerned.

I think it depends from motivation: if you think its better or it's just comfortable or you want see yourself in your art.

Whoever said it was wrong is a fool. Self-referencing is not egotistical because you're not actually portraying the character as yourself; you're just using the most easily accessible model.

Nothing wrong with self reference. Didn’t Leonardo da Vinci use his own smile to finish the Mona Lisa? I see no issue with you using yourself as a reference to draw characters. Like Dov said you are not portraying the characters as yourself so no it’s not egotistical.

Sounds like a crock to me. I think of it like putting a bit of yourself into your art. You won't see a complaint from me about it.
