Haven't done polls for awhile, and since both of my computer is fully tied up trying to get the last two scenes rendered (it ate up literally all of my RAMs lol) I figured it is a pretty good time to ask you guys one question I have been wanting to ask for awhile -

What is your sentiment on AI generated films?

There are a few things that I have to admit I simply struggles so much at doing, and it is sort of showing in Don't Grow and Drive - anything that involves a larger scene, more detailed city or destruction, it all eats up my computer's resources before I could even press the render button. (The largest file in Job Interview Gone Wrong was about 15 gigs, and it used 90gigs of RAM to even start the render). I have been quietly following the AI generations these days, in the size community especially, and I can tell the quality has improved ten fold in the past year or so, to a point where I am actually quite interested in using some of the technology to work on some films, especially projects that require a lot, a lot of computing resources (anything larger than a building, really). On top of that, it is certainly a lot faster to produce content compared to the workflow I have, which has multiple re-renders and spans out in many months the longer it goes.

Obviously it is absolutely not going to intrude in any of my main projects, especially since it is quite terrible at doing anything NSFW for now, but I am quite curious on how you guys feel about AI animated projects, whether you will outright reject and not watch them, or if they are acceptable as long as they are of good quality.

For example, I'm thinking of doing some of the projects that I wasn't really ready before - things like part 2 in the The Goddess' Arrival, Giga giantess projects, continuing / re-doing some comics in video form, and have them as the thursday updates while focusing on giving you all an amazing Sunday update each week on my main projects. But I will only consider doing that, if the majority of you are okay with it.

So, let me know! I am not sure what the update is going to be this Sunday, I've started sounding the massive project, but probably won't finish by Sunday so I will either publish another update for Don't Grow and Drive, or a final, final sound update (I know, haha!)

So I've been enjoying some of the stuff the deviantart artists are putting out there. Iamgrowing definitely has a keen eye for detail. Stories are well thought out, attempts to make character interactions are relatively smooth, camera perspective works, and the stories are like yours, they're not too rushed and they go at a steady pace. Couple of times they have done some stuff to just appeal to the masses and i'm not gonna lie, video quality went a bit downhill as a result, sometimes less is more for me. The thing i've seen with other people is rushed storylines, inconsistencies with progession of story in the video, words not matching mouth movement and characters voices sounding robotic or like they're reading off an autocue. Tool doesn't matter for me, i'm shit at AI creation, i've tried it and I just can't get it right, plus i don't have the money to splash, so I can't offer an opinion on which tool to use. As long as the story doesn't feel rushed, crammed or like too much has been thrown in just to appease some baying crowd demanding 'we want more of this', AI vids are alright by me.

I'm not gonna vote, as I don't think that be enough, so I'll comment instead. I'm very split when it comes to these things. For one, I'm a strong believer in hands on projects and hard work. Hence, why these are so good knowing that you made them. On the other hand, I do have a profile on DeviantArt, and browse ai art alot. I haven't posted anything in 2 years on my own profile. I'm only now trying out ai animations. In short, I'm okay with ai art and animations, but I don't want it to replace real talent related to film, filmmaking, and other people's beautiful art pieces.

FaTerGD

Thats very fair, and I've been browsing more and more of them too, I'm quite impressed at what they can do nowadays, and I'm very curious what "directing" them will feel like. Of course if I ever try out AI, I would never stop animating because of AI, all those nudity and NSFW scenes gonna be hand done by me and me only hahah. The reality tho, is that there are so much more tools out there these days that puts AI into play even if I'm using just blender, I think Davinci resolve is now AI powered - the software I'm using to colograde everything I make, I don't think I can escape having some sort of AI leaked into my work, but I also don't see AI development stopping, hence the thought of at least learning the skill 😉

VincentZ

In my opinion, AI is kind of tool which help your work more effiencey, I think some of character move could use AI. However, for some key story part, I think it's better that you create them since AI will make some small elements looks different between 2 frames, such as the background and clothes. Furthermore, I believe the most important thing is the vide has to represent you 'Fatergd', it must has something only works on you, not we use some AI tool can replace you, that's not good. There is one thing I believe Ai is a better worker, which is the bodysuit maker haha

FaTerGD

Yeah, I haven't watched them but I have just checked them out and yeah, their videos actually look pretty neat and it makes me wonder what it would look like with a full script and dialogues and building all of those characters!

FaTerGD

Hahahah well yeah AI wouldn't be able to create a video without direction haha, I might give it a try next week if people here are okay with it and see how it goes ;)

Lex

I'm torn on this like the others. I don't want to dismiss AI outright, especially for growth, it can do wonderful things when used right. But it has its limitations as well. Just be prepared to throw a lot of things out if they don't work, so people don't think you're just churning out slop.

C-La

Do NOT use AI. It is killing our planet and it is always of a lower quality than true animation. I would immediately unsubscribe if you ever made an AI film.

M8TS

You have far too much skill to be considering Ai. I would definitely not be coming back if it turned to that as I have with plenty of other artists that went down that route. Not just from an idealistic standpoint but also in what Ai is doing to the planet, I can't in good conscious support it. It's also just a little appalling that a skilled artist like yourself would want to downgrade yourself to the slop that Ai art is. I would rather those bleh edits we used to have of gifs of women on DA and morphs than the Ai stuff. Sorry if I'm at all coming off as harsh. It's just something I have very strong opinions on. I sincerely hope you don't go down that route. But if you did. Don't expect me to stick around.

FaTerGD

Really?? I will have a look at theirs! I do believe there is a difference between slopfest and actual decent works tho, would you make a judgement if I give it a short go just for fun? :)) Don't get me wrong, I'm not modifying any of my future contents from my animation to AI, just thinking of a way to bring you guys more content haha

FaTerGD

I know, I lowkey want to prove to people that AI can't just all be slops but then once again, I don't know if I can hahahah. One thing is that I am a little frustrated myself at how slow I am turning projects, feels a little bad to keep you all waiting all the time while I drag the word E out of Daisy's mouth 🤣

FaTerGD

Interesting! Do you believe that AI can never produce non-slops? I am curious because I see AI as simply a tool, like it does what the person behind it want it to do. I do get the "slopfest" tho, I have personally seen many of them over the past few years until recently I see a possibility of using direction to make them not "slops" Don't get me wrong, I am NEVER changing into AI from my animation, my thoughts are essentially trying a few concepts I know I cant really do using them, like a side hobby if you want to call it like that. Do you think the skills I have (thank you by the way) can't be applied on them? What would be your view / requirement that would make you convinced that it is no longer a slop? Absolutely zero offense, I am just very interested in seeing this massive divide on the topic, while also seeing it improve and wonders at what point would people change their minds (or never) haha

FaTerGD

On the planet part... honestly I feel like my renders are eating up just as much energy, just in a smaller scale lol, running 2x computer at full power all day all night 😭 Have you seen any AI content that has a better quality at all? Do you think you will ever? And the one reality I have to say, is that there are many many things that just by default include AI these days, like I can't escape them even in my animations in the future, like AI made models, AI pro-processing, AI lipsyncing, AI based destruction / shaders, would you look at my animations differently, if say, the colorgrading was partially done by AI that I can not change? (Davinci Resolve is AI now in the new updates for example)

FaTerGD

And just to you, what do you consider as "AI Slopfest"? Is it anything made by AI or is there something that you see that make you conclude it is AI slop?

FaTerGD

Thanks! I am just a bit pissed that I can not physically do some stuff that a lot of people want, like physical limitation of not enough computing power for things like destruction (also a reason why I usually stick to mini-giantess in most of my work, with a hint of final city wide destruction) I always wanted to make Salome's second part of Goddess' Arrival, even wrote scripts for it but... I can not make it good enough to my standard, thats why I thought of using AI for the help

C-La

On the energy thing, yes, your renders may use energy on a small scale, but they are not contributing to the profits of something that is destroying our planet on a large scale, you know what I mean? No, I have never once seen AI content that has better quality, and I am on the internet *a lot.* AI may improve to the point that it may be better in the future, but that still is not a justification in my mind to using a tool that is so wasteful of our resources, and also shortcuts artistic creativity. Lastly, if you cannot avoid using some AI because the greedy companies that make the animation tools you use are shoving it down animators' throats, I understand that, so be it. Just please try to keep AI usage to a minimum as much as you reasonably can.

kj555666

Personally, I don't think AI should exist as anything other than a tool, and only as a tool. As another commenter mentioned, Pixel pants went the route of using it for everything. I am no longer subscribed to Pixel Pants despite being so for years. I thought it was a one time thing for them. it was not. I will pay for AI content as long as it's used as a tool, only a tool, not for the whole thing. If it's used as a tool for the things your PC can't handle thats more than fair. I think it should used for at most 20% of the work. This is just my personal opinion, not what I believe is objective fact.

FaTerGD

Yeah I don't think I'm gonna change any of my animation projects to AI for sure, I want to try and see if I can turn this AI tool into something good for the community, would you want to see something say, written by me, directed by me, but made through an AI generation program? Honestly I am trying to figure out the definition of "slop" in the AI field, I get that it has that name attached because of people pumping out terribly done content, by the masses, just because they can. Is there a possibility for AI to not be a slop you think? or is it most just that all things AI touches becomes a slop (if you know what I mean)

FaTerGD

I do have to buy those Nvidia cards for better capacity tho... in a way I am sort of still contributing to those companies that are pushing AI... That's very interesting actually, I have been browsing on X and have seen many recent AI videos popping up (from maybe March this year?) in which the quality is better than a lot of animations / renders out there. Some people even claim that AI is the savior of "render-slop" because there are still a ton of content out there that are... well, not amazing. Interesting that there are such a polarizing opinion out there tbh. Artistic creativity is an interesting topic actually, because some would argue that creating the work (idea, script, audio, dialog, composition, etc) is the creativity while execution (renders, animating, lipsyncing) is work, while others would argue that because animating is creating, it is still artistic creativity. I don't know which side I'm on, but I do feel like creating the story and the plan took up more of my brain than animating them

Cargie

Speaking personally I have seen some well done AI animations but they just never hit the same way as yours or other animations done by hand. I value seeing the hand of the artist. when AI takes over an artists work their other skills atrophy and they just become slop generators. It’s your choice of course but if you went to AI I would most likely stop backing this patreon

FaTerGD

What if I ended up doing both? 😅 I'm not saying I will enter AI by replacing my animations, but rather an addition, if you know what I mean

kj555666

What I Personally consider 'AI Slop' is like buying a finished colouring book where a machine has coloured in all the pages for you, it's cheap, messy, and doesn't need any human effort or creativity. AI as a tool is like using it to quickly draw the rough sketch lines or background perspective grids, and then you do the main stuff like the actual line art, character details, colouring, and directing. Basically Slop is when the AI does the whole thing with a single prompt and no human refinement. Using it as a tool means letting it handle the foundational work (like rendering huge background cities that crash your PC) while human creativity is the driving force.

FaTerGD

Interesting! I get what you mean. There are a ton of them out there that write a prompt for a giant woman to do xyz, pumping out a dozen a week, I guess fits perfectly as "ai slop" in your opinion. What if say, hypothetically I wrote scripts, designed the character, did storyboard, wrote dialog and camera direction, used AI to make a flattened video (fake log) and colorgraded it in post myself. Do you think that will still be considered AI slop or is the human involved enough for it to become just a tool?

M8TS

I personally don't think Ai art will ever not be slop to me. Even the highest of quality stuff i've seen for it are just innately abhorrent to me. Especially in the sense of what it's "taking away" from humanity. It's a direct threat to the very basic concepts of humanity. Art has been an expression of the soul since the beginning. Generative Ai is gross to me in that it steals the essence of many people's creative minds and melds it into a soulless heap. It doesn't matter how "good" it looks to me. It at its core will always be that, and thus will always be something I fundamentally disagree with. I could also get into the vast political/environmental reasons and what not. But that would make this post obscenely long and I don't much feel like arguing with people here on a Patreon post (those that might respond to it in a negative way) But I will say when some of the best creative minds in the art world, for example Hayao Miyazaki, orrr Hideo Kojima see it and are against it. Then that sort of speaks for itself. Not to mention some of the gross practices that have been done (not saying you would do this) with people stealing the voices/likeness of people who don't want to have said things stolen, and even doing so from people who are no longer alive, like what heartlessly happened to people like Billy Kametz. If you are insistent on making it a side project of any kind . I would very much hope it's not behind any kind of paywall in general. And I would also very much not like to see it. Oh and as a more personal aside this being purely selfish. Fuck AI because it means I can't buy new Ram for my PC

M8TS

I would much rather wait a year (or years) for a good high quality handmade animation, game, show, movie etc. I've done it before, I can do it again.

FaTerGD

Wow, very strong opinion there, appreciate the honesty! I heard the RAM prices have come down recently, right? haha, hopefully it will go back to the old days (I will probably need to upgrade my RAM at some point) None of my work is behind paywall recently, honestly, it is all going to be released eventually, Patreon is just here so I could make a living haha, I want to share the works to everyone who enjoys it :) But in a way, wouldn't you think generative AI is what's enabling average joes to be able to produce things that companies invest millions on, like people who never had time or money to express their creative minds because they don't have a team of investors, a company of animators, VFX, post, photographers to make their idea come to life? The reality of how I see it, it doesn't matter for us to scream "fuck AI", AI is here to stay, they opened the Pandora's box and they can't close it, I believe thats why people have been calling to trademark / CC yourself, your voice, your face, so other people can't take it away for free but it is definitely not going to stop it from happening, unfortunately, its a world we live in, access vs privacy. The scary thing is that, while I am stuck on making one building explode because I don't have $100,000 to invest in a monster machine or a team of VFX artists, some others are creating things that I dream to be able to do in blender, seeing buildings fracturing, seeing interactions that it is gonna take me a whole week to animate, it makes me wonder what could happen if I were to apply my creative direction on it.

FaTerGD

I really appreciate at honestly, I hope people are as patient as you because I am SLOW 🤣🤣🤣

kj555666

That's definitely using it as a tool. let people know that's how it was made, and a lot of reasonable viewers should accept that, but of course there will always be people that see the word 'AI' and immediately reject it, regardless of context, intent or how much you actually use. But for the audience that cares about your work, seeing hands-on direction, storyboarding, and post-processing should make all the difference. AI tools in the creative field were designed to help fill in the gaps and lay the foundation, what you described is it's intended purpose as a tool, not a crutch.

FaTerGD

Honestly that would be the maximum amount I'd use AI for tbh, I am way to controlling to write a random prompt to get AI to spit out things I don't want half of the time, I heard there are ways to put in your own storyboard these days and have full directorial control, makes me itching to use it to make shots I want to see haha. But like some others say, AI is still extremely polarized, I have to tread very carefully and of course not stop developing any of my work because of AI, in the end blender do give me the most control, despite also giving me the most work hahaha. I only wish someone can develop some sort of AI building / destruction thing I could use to solve my problems, and I can do the rest myself. I absolutely suck at modeling so that's something I probably won't be doing for the foreseeable future lol All i want is to use any tool I can find to create my story and my vision

kj555666

Hm, I don't know much about blender, but I have some friends who use it. Have you looked into Natural Language AI Modelling? Apparently there are tools like 3D-Agent & MuleRun AI that are supposed to let you type in a prompt inside blender itself and it will reshape models automatically according to your instructions (like vertices and stuff). they also mentioned RBDLab and FXForge.

FaTerGD

Yeah RBD lab is what I'm using, but I don't make the city models (and sometimes their topology is really terrible, lol) The issue actually comes down to fractures, like the more realistic I want it to be the more pieces I have to do to a building, that balloons the file and ram up to like insane level, my 128gig ram couldn't take it at one point from all the pieces I made from one building I can't begin to imagine what happens if one crashes into two in the same scene hahaha It is actually a bit easier to fake when you get larger, then the buildings just drop into pieces, but most of my animations end up being size 1 for 1 against the buildings and that makes things very complicated 😭 Thats why I see those AI generated video of destruction and went, damn, imagine that in my works, it'd look absolutely insane!

kj555666

Yeah, thats fair. If 128GB is too little, there's not really any other options (that I as a non-animator am aware of.). And with RAM prices through the roof (Ironically because of AI Data centres), getting more RAM is also probably not the best Idea cost wise. Well, I've given my two cents, I do create content my self so I understand the temptation. Stick to what you perceive the difference between a tool and Slop is and it Should be fine. I wish you all the luck.

FaTerGD

The other option is learning nuke from scratch... it is something I want to so eventually but that process is gonna take a whole year haha But thanks man, given there are still such a strong sentiment against it I might just dip my toes in to see how it works 😅 but one thing I know I personally would not let a slop to happen on my watch 😵‍💫

FaTerGD

In a way, that can be solved by artisitc, clear directions (for sameness) and self crafted characters and obviously strict review to make sure there are no drifting right? 😆 But I get what you mean on AI slopfest, the fact that people ask for prompt after someone make something just means they want to copy it 🥱 which makes the whole thing worse
