What else I’m enjoying

Thursday was Art House Theater Day. While you may have missed the free popcorn available at many art houses across the nation, the truth is that every day is art house movie theater day. This weekend, consider supporting your local art house theater. In a moment of intense artistic censorship via corporate apparatus, the art house is a sanctuary. (Want to watch the movie above? It's Nights of Cabiria)

I’m actually going to my local art house cinema today because of their summer music festival! They’re playing Stop Making Sense this weekend, so a friend of mine and I are going on opening night.

interesting to hear the popularity of popeye in japan. the popeye magazine that was being referred to is actually still in publication btw! it’s a pretty great source for japanese men’s fashion, lifestyle, photography, etc.

I've been a fan of the Italians Do it Better record label for many years and I was intrigued that they seemingly took a "whole roster" approach to soundtracking some indie game. Now that you're also telling me that Wheel World is worth playing, and you didn't even mention a "killer OST" as a vibe crutch, guess I better play it now!

Is it possible to add timestamps to the patreon-only segments in the descriptions? I'm catching up now on the extended episodes, and while I could find the content on the first episode just fine, I can't seem to find it on the second episode after scrolling back and forth.

I loved the Gameboy Donkey Kong game, it served me well on countless car rides. I had hoped that the switch release of Mario vs Donkey Kong would be that again, not realizing that that was a follow up to a different game for the gba.

Hey Chris. I was reading up on the credit card / Collective Shout nonsense, and saw that The Verge had put up an edit correcting their claim that Consume Me! was hit through the censorship wave. Wanted to inform you since you reported on that this episode. I was also wondering - I heard that Japan deals with less issues from payment professors ascribing morals to economics, with the cause behind that being the konbini payment system - purchasing items online, getting a barcode, and taking that barcode to a convenience store and paying with cash. But from what I read, the konbini system is still handled through third-party payment processors. Just not Visa and MasterCard. So my curiosity is - wouldn't that have the same net result? Isn't it still *possible* that payment processors can interfere with what they deem as immoral purchases, and it's more that the current processors just don't do that? Are there any things we can do to shift our economic systems and remove power from shitheads like Peter Thiel? Bit bigger than video games, but with things as they are it's hard to not be.

Really excited for the next episode, it's honestly a topic that somebody could have hours long discussions about and that could be taken in so many directions.

Love the history of arcades & early Nintendo history. I appreciate Jeremy's insights. I'd also recommend Acquired podcast's "Nintendo's Origins" episode for a deep dive of the history of Nintendo's Famicom & SNES dominance.
