Great episode! Love Ash's and Natalie's perspective about the LaDS controversy and why this game has such a hold on player emotions. Literally nobody is catering to this market except for LaDS (there is one competitor I'm aware of on the horizon, but there is no release date yet) and I feel like this is a major reason why this controversy has gotten so much scrutiny - for better and worse, Infold is setting the precident for this untapped "girl gooner game" market (and yes I do mean "and" because they do some great things and some stupid things). One of the limiting things about producing such a high quality podcast is that it can only ever be a snapshot in time. This conversation does a great job of covering a specific time period in the controversy, but the situation has evolved! Long story short, in subsequent weeks, due in part to positive actions by pro-Valko fans (like raising money for wolf conservation organizations), more discussion has come out from branches of the Chinese government and media about how while Valko's marketing was a miss, upon further investigation the character itself wasn't "guilty" of promoting things like domestic abuse. There has also been reporting about how while the game is rated 18+ in China, minors have been going to some wild measures to get accounts, and then spending thousands of their parents money on the game, leading to more discussions about how to keep kids out of spaces they're not supposed to be in. If this fantastic episode piqued your interest in the situation, I highly recommend checking out the @AngelsCornerr YouTube channel. She has a few episodes out explaining the situation as it progresses, what it means for the lore and creative integrity of the game, and the evolving conversation in China. While this whole situation is bleak, honestly, I'm not ready to bury my werewolf husband's code yet. I think the Chinese game market could seriously suffer if harassment campaigns like this end up controlling what developers can and can't release.

Excellent episode. If any patreon-exclusive is made freely available in the near future, I think it should be this one with a bullet. Important information for this audience to have. The one thing I think I'd add is just that EA Sports specifically isn't just attractive because of how big it is, but also because SA has pursued sports in general extremely aggressively (and, unfortunately, Sports Entertainment, in their ongoing relationship with the WWE). Concerning the first half of the show: extremely informative, and a nice followup to some of the ongoing concerns of this show (specifically the erotic games series). Hard to address topics like this without supporting American anti-China propaganda (or the reverse), but i think the line was very nicely walked here.

Am *I* a discerning gooner? 🤔 I read an article about this a month or two back, but this was an excellent deep dive into what's going on.

Great episode! I’ve never played LaDS but I downloaded it onto my iPad today thanks to this fun discussion! Can’t wait to try it out today! In the years just after high school, I would play a lot of emulated, fan-translated otome games and the mention of them is what got me on board. And while the gacha aspect is a bit of a turn off for me, I think Ash and Natalie are right that there just really isn’t anything else out there, at this scale and in this way, catering to the dark romance fans or romance fans in general— which, as we can see by how big this game is— is a huge oversight. Im a library worker and the biggest draw toward reading right now, aside from the typical James Patterson bestseller thrillers, is Dark Romance and Romantasy! The EA discussion was indeed bleak! Aside from the obvious ethical problems with the whole thing, on a selfish level, I am a huge fan of BioWare’s games and I just can’t see a scenario where this bodes well for them. Already they have struggled with their most recent two releases— Veilguard already being a victim of pressure to make a live service game (and as I understand it— a few other scrapped iterations) before reverting to a single player experience that feels a bit hollow. I cannot imagine a future in which that doesn’t get WORSE with this new move.

Game? Downloaded. Tea? Spilled to anyone who would listen to me go on a half hour tangent. Ash and Natalie were amazing, thank you both so much!!
