Seems like a lot of decent ideas taken in utterly shitass directions. Like, yes, working on forming bonds within your community does often mean getting help with day to day tasks! Yiu AREA more likely to form a lasting bond with the potential rando in your friend's house than you are at the bass pro shop or whatever, but this is all taken to such mercenary extremes! Maybe you have a convo and make a new friend?? is that not enough? Like, you don't have to manipulate your friends into yardwork, either? I'd love to come over and help with yardwork! Just ask! The train walk sounds like a more ridiculous version of a thing my bestie & i would do in NYC, where we'd try to walk the length of manhattan then train it home. But that was the subway, and we were navigating and chatting and eating the length of manhattan, partially because we liked to walk and talk and we were broke teens. Do i cherish that time? fully. would i fucking sell it as morally superior to going away to a resort with your bestie? no, wtf. I am extremely apprehensive about owning a car, resentful that i may need to rely on one, but that's a systemic issue, not a personal fucking failing if/when i buy one. I mean, that's the tldr of this whole thing, right? "Self righteous white couple distills hundreds of hours of 'sustainable living' content to 'only YOU can end systemic overconsumerism'"

starting to think this book may not have been written by someone who has ever struggled with making ends meet.

Witches are Uranium

reading this review and thinking about this book literally made my eye twitch in anger but also I have a really big question for the authors. WHERE THE FUCK IS THE HEDONISM???

oh dear god thank you so much, i had to read this book for a class and I HATED IT SO MUCH--but could never really articulate why, thank you for hitting it on the nail o7

There's a specific genre of self help books that I like to call "if you're disabled, fuck you" and I see this book fits in very well. The pushups example is particularly ludicrous considering the advice could be "invest in a few good blankets and coats" which is what I did when I spent winter rarely ever putting heat on. It saved us around £300 or so.

that's FASCINATING that this was assigned reading, can I ask what kind of class it was? and uuuuh what on earth the instructor was trying to use it to teach?

mercenary is SUCH a good word for the attitude here, and yeah it absolutely comes down to the rampant individualism. systemic change isn't nearly as important as changing how you, the reader, feel about your spending!
