I apparently checked it out last year on Libby but never read it and now my library no longer has it… I shall resist reading this post to avoid spoilers

Hey, this collection was also formative to *me* when I was 14!! I can see it on my shelf from where I'm sitting... This may be a sign to reread.....

A friend of mine had a copy in high school and lent it out to everyone who sat at our lunch table! I remember my favourites being Incoulata, Bougainvillea, Prom Night, Love Will Tear Us Apart, and Princess Prettypants so I was also pretty biased towards zombies it seems, or at least towards Scott Westerfeld and Libba Bray lol. My library doesn't have it but it seems to be at a used bookstore I like so I might also need to reread it now.

omg when i saw the notification for this post my immediate thought was "no way... could it be..?" and it was!! i never read the full anthology - i borrowed the book while i was at a week long meetup for writer teens and read a couple of the stories. the thing about me is that unicorns are My Thing, and zombies are decidedly Not. HOWEVER....... love will tear us apart did absolutely permanently change my brain chemistry. something about being a queer teen at a time where there aren't a lot of stories about other queer people available to you... and then you read this and it's like a bolt of lightning. man!!!!!!!!!!! it's so good. i think the thing about unicorns and zombies is that both can be very interesting and potent storytelling components, but they Have to be wielded correctly. zombies have an advantage of being Formerly Human, like vampires and werewolves, which makes for very tasty (pun only halfway intended) narratives that are easy to cook and serve. unicorns do not have the human component and are literally a whole different beast. they have a very long and strong history with lots of symbolism and interesting threads, but i feel like so much of the mainstream idea of unicorns (especially in that particular time) was very centered around rainbows and glitter. this always annoyed me as a unicorn elitist, but ah well. i trust peter s. beagle and very few others to do unicorns Right and it's probably this neuroticism that made me hesitant to finish the anthology proper.

I know I read this, but apparently I forgot everything except the vibe of the editors' intros, the celebrity zombiesitting, and who deflowered the princess. I haven't read Holly Black recently, but at 13ish I imprinted hard on Tithe. There's a scene where the heroine tells the fairy knight love interest to to 'kiss her ass' and since she uses his True Name (not understanding its power), he drops to his knees in a McDonald's.

A Thousand Flowers literally IS for the freaks, it Awakened something in me when I first read it lmao... I actually own an ebook copy of this book, definitely gonna reread!

I remember seeing this collection in my HS library but as someone not particularly into zombies I skipped it. This list did send me scrambling in search of my favorite anthology of fantasy short story from my teenage years which I could not remember the name of. I could only remember the one story about a selkie which was the first time I remember reading and enjoying explicit sex in a book, but that doesn’t go into a search engine easily. After rediscovering other forgotten anthology friends (Monstrous Affections or Steampunk!, anyone?) I eventually found it in Rags & Bones: New Twists on Timeless Tales. Appropriately, the selkie story is “Awakened” by Melissa Marr. Well titled for my teenage experience. I think it was actually my sister’s book, not the library’s. I wonder if she still has it.

it has stayed so fresh in my memory for YEARS! the terrible baby having a green penis and testicles in particular... girl what was going ON

oh I love this, it's so neat that you also went running to find a vividly remembered teenage story!

I'm not familiar with Beagle's work, although I know the name; what do you like about his unicorns?

I own this as an ebook that my mother gave me! I've read it a few times – I really like some of the stories but I'm just not really a horror person. Should try it again though

p.s. seeing alaya dawn johnson’s name triggered something in my memory and it turns out another super memorable book of my teens was by her! i’ve been trying to find it for yearssss without any memory of the author, title or even character names! The Summer Prince! romantic and horny about body mod technology and set in solarpunk brazil, i remember it being such a breath of fresh air in my YA diet
