Teaching an angry rat to love is an epic task~

CatCouch

She's more beautiful than she thinks!

CatFromDream

I guess I'll go die in a ditch. <3

CatCouch

Best place to be with Kristine She probably spends time in a ditch, haha

pj wolf

So does she just reject all compliments are does she truly not believe them?

CatCouch

She is nihilistic, so she is more likely to not believe them. Idea behind her is she doesn't see the color or joy in the world and must be shown that life is actually kinda cool~

Rat - Chiku

Yeah, she pretty and I like her, and I want to see how long it takes before she does something!

CatCouch

Keep telling her nice things until she snaps Or starts to feel a little bit of happiness inside and opens up~

Rat - Chiku

Keep telling her nice things and open her up~ Got it!

GrandiaF

dems some cute faces~

CatCouch

She's a cutie~ She just doesn't know it

Obi-Wan Fur-Nobi

Hostility really suits her. Threatening to throw me in a ditch only makes her look better 😭

CatCouch

It makes her even more cuddle-able~

CatCouch

The best kind of personality for a rat girl~ At least she's not yandere!

I think you might mean another word that "nihilistic". Because that would mean she doesn't care, because to her nothing matters. So if nothing mattered to her, then compliments would roll off her because the compliments don't matter, in one sense. Everything, Everywhere, All At Once was a good study on nihilism, both it's positive and negative sides. But if she's rejecting compliments, then it's likely she just has low self-esteem and responds with anger because she believes people are lying to her.

CatCouch

Her concept I started with is she doesn't see color or joy in the world. She has limited color in her design to fit with her colorless view of the world around her. Her name comes from the Ben Folds song "Kristine From The 7th Grade" The lyric "'Cause this world can be Wonderful too, yeah Do you ever see it that way, Kristine?" inspired her name. She does have a lot of tsundere elements in her attitude too.

pj wolf

Hm. Maybe compliments are the one thing that pierces the veil of nothing mattering or however she got that way. And if you got the inspiration from a song called "Kristine from the 7th Grade" that might even be a bigger tell because it might feel like some kind of teenage ennui that lasted way too long. Of course, I could be wrong entirely. It is your character after all.

CatCouch

I do have a reason for Kristine Rat's personality and eventual story! It's a bit long, sorry in advance if you do want to read, haha The song is a political song about a fictional girl Be Folds knew in the 7th grade that grew up to get lost in culture wars and misery of current politics. These are the lyrics: ----- "Are you the same Kristine I knew from seventh grade? No, it's definitely you Just with a new last name Someone who laughed a lot Is what I remember the most But the face in your profile Suggests maybe not so much anymore Yeah, I got the emails These last two years every day And I just don't reply because I'm not really sure what to say Kristine from the seventh grade The anger, the all caps And all the pseudoscience The misspellings, they must be on purpose We went to a good school, Kristine So what would you imagine I might Take from this deluge of memes The cryptic, dark Bible quotes Guns and dead fetuses Seriously, Kristine, are you okay? 'Cause this world can be Wonderful too, yeah Do you ever see it that way, Kristine? From the seventh grade There's a break in the rain A perfect time for a walk The smell of wet leaves And warm smiles and hellos These things exist in the real world, you know Oh, what a shame, Kristine This disease that makes strangers of friends But if these days it's really "us's" and "them's" Maybe you should just take me off of both of those lists 'Cause it's such a short and sad And beautiful life Do you ever see it that way?" ----- The song hit me hard as it was performed at the Kennedy Center and Ben Folds was the artistic adviser there for the orchestra. He left after the current politics started that you probably are aware of now since it's still news, haha I put both the song and my feelings about the Kennedy Center situation into Kristine Rat. So she acts as the Annie And The Mirror Goat world equivalent of someone that lost the joy in her life and views the world around her as meaningless. In Annie's world there are a few factions that have conflicts for the story with each other and Kristine is one that takes no side as she views it all as meaningless. She offsets the more positive vibes I have in a lot of my characters too!

pj wolf

Man, if this character was based off current politics, and this girl basically (or at least tries to) believe in nothing because believing in something burned her? Then yeah, that might explain the anger. The lyrics seem lovely but do hit hard a little. The armor of cynicism can seem tough but it's so, so brittle. I think if someone were to try to put in the time to maybe rescue her, it would take a while because she doesn't want to believe in anything anymore to protect herself. So of course she'd read something negative into something so simple as a compliment.

CatCouch

This is a bit of what I want to explore. Of course along with all the usual lewdness in my art. But having a OC that is legitimately angry and turns away from affection can lead to some fun character development over time
