I love this special. It's got a magic combination of funny, warm and just a little but spooky. Mackenzie Crook has very definitely read his MR James (a superb English Ghost story writer of the late 19th and early 20th Century). This special (and some of series 3) is dripping with a bit of his style of haunted landscapes and haunted treasure hunts. If you like spooky and want to watch something to give you some cosey creepy feelings I can really recommend the BBC Ghost Stories for Christmas as something to react to in the future. They are amazing (and Mackenzie Crook has *definitely* watched them given how the Detectorists is). They stay with you, especially the old ones from the 1970s. Can't wait for series 3!

The Helmet Lance walks past is the Sutton Hoo helmet. Arguably the most famous British archeological discovery. There isn't a kid who's been to school in the UK since the 1940s who hasn't had a picture of it in a textbook at school. The story of it, and how the rest of the artefacts there were found is pretty amazing and was even made into a film; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dig_(2021_film) Worth a watch if you enjoy this sort of stuff.

Small prophets and its not really that similar. I imagine they are gonna do another series, its quite open for one

i mentioned the Sutton hoo special of time team, it would have fitted in nicely before this since its also saxon and from my neck oft the woods although im a bit north (about an hour and a half drive) im still in metal detectorists club area and plenty of finds around Norfolk and Suffolk. If blackadder replaces fawlty towers (it must be in the running still) it would have introduced you to tony robinson (baldric) too although if you do get enough time an episode of time team that either finds gold, saxon artifacts or even viking artifacts might still be a good watch. 32:12 in your reaction https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sutton_Hoo_helmet

Great series ❤️

lance said he even stopped hearing Birdsong so it was showing the curse was lifted when he heard the blackbird singing. I get a lot of blackbirds here, watching me in the garden each year and throwing them earthworms and they Iove calci worms and such, then they bring their young over who then also get used to me and the cycle continues

lisa, the coins were an offering, is the word

Small prophets is awesome. It's definately a good replacement for this when its finished. Similar feel (though not in the countryside).

Karlitos

"the Egyptian curse was for real!" - ummmmmm 😂😂😂 good episode and good reaction!

Joanna

The reason it feels disconnected from series to series for you is probably because you're watching it without a gap. It wasn't like that when it first aired. The time jump had happened in the real world. The Aestel that Lance found is based on a real life, famous one called called the Alfred Jewel. It's the handle of a pointer used to follow text when reading. It's at The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. https://www.ashmolean.org/alfred-jewel

Joanna

Forgot to say that a British Christmas special may or may not actually contain Christmas!

Greg and Lisa React_Official

ooooh! I didn't even think of that. That makes a lot of sense. And OMG the real Aestel is amazing!!! thank you for sharing that ~ Lisa

Karlitos

Oh definitely not! I was in a church built with the skulls of 1000 monks in Portugal, I didn't take anything from there either. Was pretty creepy.

Greg and Lisa React_Official

Oh how fun! I bet the fear of curses was real amongst some of the detectorists...I think that's super cool if he studied some of MR James' books and we would LOVE to watch the BBC ghost stories! I love stories that stick with you...sounds so spooky! ~ Lisa

Christian Rolfe

Russell is in it, well the actor anyway, its mckenzies but he plays a smaller role. A few other actors that are in a few things but nothing you've reacted to

Christian Rolfe

Oh Michael Palin who you might know from monty python

Abergynolwyn

It’s odd to imagine time and space as a fabric, woven and folded with myth and legend betwixt and between magic and reality. Who knows if we create the universe around us L’ or mere performers of destiny with recompense valued not . G’ your missus is a little treasure ❤️

RJ

Oo canny wait to sit and watch this! You'll have to be sure to watch the movie special after series 3 too!

Greg and Lisa React_Official

magic, legend and energy are real...to me. That is the question Abergynolwyn isn't it? Do we create it, is it destined, all planned out ahead of time...shifted by the choices we make or controlled by something else? It's all a fun mystery isn't it. Let's just say, I relate to Sheila. ❤️ Lisa

RJ

I think because it's feature length (75 minutes), they called it a movie! Came out in 2022.

Abergynolwyn

It’s certainly a wonderfully enigmatic creation Lisa .Shiela Sage 🙂

Lee Dellbridge

To be fair this aired just 3 weeks after series 2 finished. So there wasn't much of a gap.

Lee Dellbridge

Yeah some places have it as episode 7 but it was years after episode 6.
