"The value of such artificially-grown crystals shows the difficulty in attempting to mass-produce storage for mana," the professor continued. "You can see the striations here, completely different from a naturally grown crystal. Mana storage requires a medium that can transfer magic easily, and artificial crystals will leak from all sides unless sealed."

Suria listened in silence, for once not happy that the class had gone in a different direction. The woman who taught Foundations this loop mostly recited from the same scripts, but for this section deeper into the term, she had gone off on a strange tangent regarding crystals, even bringing in one that she was apparently very proud of.

So far the logic of it seemed lacking, at least as far as Suria could tell. An artificially grown crystal might leak, but mana crystals were usually encased in another substance anyway, so it shouldn't matter. Most likely she was just misunderstanding something, but unlike many professors, this woman actively hated questions, so Suria held her tongue.

"In order to make this clear," the professor told them, "you will each be growing your own mana crystals. Seed fragments can be purchased in Darmkael, and I expect you to keep in mind everything I said about selecting the appropriate grain. That's all for this class."

Many of the students grumbled as they began to separate, reinforcing Suria's gut feeling that this assignment was unreasonable. She thought back to the previous loops and remembered this section of the course being some lectures and readings about why mana storage wasn't generally a critical part of individual-scale battles. As she remembered, it came down to most conflicts ending before mages ran dry, outside of certain entrenched situations.

Part of her wanted to just ignore the assignment, yet Suria still dragged herself off campus to find what she needed. For one, simply ignoring her studies might attract attention, and for another, this loop might be her only chance to experience whatever this was. It was always possible that there would be some value in having grown a bad crystal, even if she couldn't see it.

When she reached the market, Suria was shocked to find that even the cheapest seed crystals, the kind the professor had advised them against buying, were at least 100 oss. She could afford one thanks to her stipend, but it would have been crippling in most other loops. The unfairness of it led her to stew between the different stalls until she abruptly realized that she knew the man standing beside her.

"There you are," Dsjaho-an said quietly. "Keep searching, don't look at me."

"What are you doing?" Suria whispered back. "We shouldn't be seen together."

"Darkmoon isn't monitoring the city carefully - Jeilin and I ran some tests and we're fairly sure of it. Do you know anything about what the professors are doing?"

"They don't tell me much of anything."

"Well, we're grateful that you've shielded us as much as you can."

"I wish you wouldn't talk about me at all," Suria said with a wince. "The risk of them realizing something is wrong..."

"Don't worry, I've perfected my contingency." Dsjaho-an smirked and flicked his necklace. "I tested it in the last loop and it was perfect: instant death at will. If they try to imprison me, I'll be gone before they can ask any questions. I wanted to offer you one. Not for a favor this time."

Surprised, Suria spent some time looking through the crystal shards to collect herself. She didn't like the idea, though she tried to consider whether it was just fear at wearing a device that could kill her. Having a method to quit the loop instantly certainly seemed like an advantage in theory, but...

"I'm under too much scrutiny," Suria told him. "Could you make one smaller?"

"It has to wrap around important body parts or it won't be as effective." Dsjaho-an frowned over at her. "It takes several days to make one, so maybe I'll start anyway. If you come to your senses, contact me and I can pass it along."

"How do I contact you?"

"Do you know Bub's Bobs? It's a good place to meet. We've used him in a lot of past cycles, even to acquire illegal things, and the old man has never once ratted us out."

"Alright." Suria realized that she was being surly and forced herself to smile at Dsjaho-an instead. "Congratulations on perfecting your necklace. Maybe you can show me next cycle."

"That's more reasonable." He grinned and stepped back into the crowd, then he was gone.

Doing her best to set aside the distraction, Suria purchased one of the cheapest crystals and took it back to campus. Growing a crystal could allegedly be done in variety of different ways, and she couldn't afford the expensive equipment the professor favored, so she was going to have to put something together. If she couldn't find a pentagonal inscription, she'd need to set up some kind of device.

A few days later, the next Introduction to Hazardous Naturalism class finally proved useful instead of merely interesting. Professor Abouric brought in a pile of small yellow stones, demonstrated how one could light itself on fire, then distributed them around the class.

"We're going to use these emberstones because the individual fires are relatively harmless," he explained as he passed them around. "If you fell into a quarry of emberstones, maybe you'd be seriously burned, but even all these couldn't burn down the lab. They'll serve as a good proof of concept for everything we've been studying, so consider this an examination. Any partial burns will result in a deduction from your score."

Suria dutifully followed the procedures she'd been taught, from using gloves to placing her emberstone inside a metal circle that restricted mana flow.

"Now, the essential lesson today will be using spells to control effects," the professor continued. "As soon as I get back to the front, I'll show you some inscriptions that can arrest a natural process. They're modest at the early stages, but in the proper glyph, you can seize hold of nature itself. There are legends about archmages holding back wildfires for hours that aren't just legends."

Once at the front of the class Professor Abouric began to demonstrate a variety of different inscriptions useful for stopping various processes. Some tried to interrupt a specific stage of the process, but others seemed to simply hold it back. It seemed quite odd to her, very similar to stopping time, yet it didn't feel at all like the same sort of magic to her.

"There are a lot of cases where interrupting a process is useful," Professor Abouric continued. "For example, you can be more precise with alchemy if you can bind a liquid or temperature until the exact moment it's needed. This inscription won't be worth anything for that, but when it comes to most fires, it'll stop them in their tracks."

He had been circling around the same subject for a little while now and Suria wondered if he was fishing for something in particular. Under normal circumstances, she would already have asked about the potential connection to time magic, but right now that felt too suspicious... then again, if her incipient mana sense was correct and this wasn't time magic, wouldn't avoiding that reveal knowledge that a normal student shouldn't have? Since the class was getting restless, Suria decided to just speak up and hope her instinct was right.

"How are we stopping the fire?" she asked. "It seems almost like time magic, but isn't that forbidden?"

"Actually, it would be difficult to tell the difference between these stasis spells and time magic," he answered smoothly, as if he had been waiting for that exact question. "For the record, a temporary time stop actually isn't forbidden and would be just as effective - if anything, it'd be more effective in more circumstances. But absent time magic, we have no choice but to learn a variety of stasis spells."

So had his plan been to draw the connection and hope that it somehow induced loopers to make a mistake? Suria wasn't sure that she'd been needed for that, but if she'd seemed cooperative, that was good for her. The professors hadn't called on her to do anything in particular in some time and she was worried that they might be increasingly suspicious of her.

Time magic aside, Suria did want to learn the stasis inscriptions: they could be used for something as grand as binding an opponent or as simple as keeping food hot. Based on what she had learned in her Evocation class, there would likely be strong similarities to time stop spells, if she ever learned those.

The thought made Suria fumble her stylus and very nearly set her emberstone on fire. Was she really considering trying to master such a spell? It seemed impossible: the runic requirement would likely be high, the inscriptions wouldn't be available in normal sources, and even if she managed all that, it would just draw suspicion to her. Yet somehow the idea had crept into her mind... she was trapped in here, forced to endure time magic repeatedly, so perhaps she could turn that ordeal into something useful.

In the short term, however, it was impossible, and in this specific loop it was likely suicide. Suria remained focused on the inscriptions at the front of class and had more trouble internalizing them than usual, perhaps because she was so distracted. When Professor Abouric came by her table he nodded in commiseration.

"You have the form right," he told her, "so the details will come in time."

"I'm not sure I can finish before the end of class," Suria confessed. "And I feel like I want to try the spells for moving animals, too."

"Normally I wouldn't suggest this, but you might want to try reading Flora of the Imperial Wastes." Professor Abouric leaned against the side of her table and lowered his voice. "Now, I personally thought it was a gripping read, but it might be a little dry for most. The important thing is that in her travels, the author goes over a whole range of inscriptions for stopping dangerous reactions. You can either repeat the ones I covered in class or find others you like better."

"Oh, thank you." So far Professor Abouric had recommended her three books during classes and all three of them had been very helpful. In a future loop, she'd have to take one of his courses that would be more relevant to her immediate goals, because she was sure it would be useful.

Before the end of class she managed to internalize one of the stasis inscriptions and even used it to interrupt her emberstone in the middle of its burn. She stared at the yellow stone and its frozen little flame, marveling that she had done such a thing. Unlike most spells, she could feel the natural order of the world pushing back, so she couldn't hold it for long.

Fortunately the professor saw her work and gave her full marks - an instant later Suria felt foolish for her relief, because there was so much more at stake. All her scores in the class would be wiped out when the loop reset, and she should have been more concerned about being discovered. Still, it felt good to have applied herself to a simple problem and managed to master it.

On her way out, Suria saw Xuhriha move in beside her. They'd spoken once or twice, ostensibly to exchange notes from the class, and nothing much had come from it. Something about the way Xuhriha was moving now, her skips a little too vigorous and her smile a little too wide, made Suria think that this time wouldn't be anything so mundane.

"Those inscriptions are hard," Xuhriha whined. "Did he give you a suggestion?"

"He did," Suria said with a forced smile. "I don't have the book yet, but I plan to get it from the library later today. You want to share it?"

"Yes, please. Honestly, today was not the best day for my notes..."

They headed out, chatting about the class, until they separated from the other students outside the Wyvernry. Instead of moving back across the moor, Xuhriha nudged their path into the woods, and before too long they had left all the other students behind and were standing in the graveyard again. It was eerily silent there, and if that wasn't enough, Xuhriha cast some sort of privacy spell around them.

"What is it?" Suria practically expelled the question along with her tension. "Is it really that urgent?"

"They got Dsjaho-an," Xuhriha told her sadly. "Soul-killed."

Uhuh, that’s reeeeally bad. And what’s even worse is that the week is over! We’ve been so spoiled with a chapter every day.

AA

This loop is so cooked. Suria’s braver than me for sticking it out. Well, dying might be just as risky in their minds since they still don’t know how the time loop works.

Msharlo1

I think the background about stopping reactions was a subtle lore drop about how they got Dsjaho-an. They stopped his reaction before it could kill him. It just shows that none of the loopers are a match for the thrones. I'm interested in how Xuriha knows he was soul killed. I'm liking the theory that she is a necromancer but it'll be like the tunnel people all over again.

Msharlo1

The only reason I would stay would be because I would worry about the thrones saving me and then soul killing me. I'd probably do something like purposefully get caught in that accident that keeps the healers busy early in the loops. The thrones are on the look out for improbable events, but are less likely to clock improbably bad luck? Maybe.

Tarim Shahab

I wonder if it is Xuhriha who did the soul killing and is using the professors as patsy. Maybe I'm completely off base but Xuhriha seems very shady to me.

rinnmusic

I wonder how Xuhriha knows that he was soul-killed, as opposed to that he used his necklace to kill his body or died in another way. Maybe she is listening in on the professors' conversations.

Msharlo1

I think it is a good point to do a re-read of the week to fully absorb all of the new content. Too much content released leads to less discussion and missed details

AA

I mean they aren’t watching her 24/7 or she would already have been caught so she could try to kill herself at night in her room using a quick method. But yeah I agree that everything is risky since they don’t have enough information.

Msharlo1

Had my huzzah moment and went "The Sword of Damocles" as I was looking up Adwyrma because I wanted to name the person who caused all this. If she didn't get soul killed it will make next loop interesting as I could see her rushing right back to the hall at the beginning having learned nothing in death. Which would set up a great dichotomy with Suria who skipped earlier loops but has now gone through all this new trauma. Especially since her escape could look very different with slightly different timing.

Clara

I bet next loop Suria will wait out 59 minutes before unlocking the doors just to be sure the thrones aren't interrupted

Msharlo1

I would probably just take the L and die next loop in the fight. That way if Adwyrma shows up again she might think that Suria was soul killed and thus not come the following loop.

Msharlo1

Maybe, personally I would be treating references to time looping (by Xuriha and Dsjaho) with much more hostility. "The first rule of..." style. Everything they wanted to convey could have been said without outting themselves/Suria. And while Dsjaho's artifact itself was probably the final nail in his coffin, because it is basically like wearing a giant sign that says "I'm a time looper and I think I'm so clever". I treat his assertion of safety with skepticism.

DrSubterfuge

Little bit suspicious that Xuhriha knows he was soul-killed. Did she overhear something? But I want to believe she's a friend so I guess I'll just take it at face value lol. I wonder what did Dsjaho-an in. Was his suicide device alone a tip-off? Or did he do something risky first. Either way, it seems it wasn't as good as he thought it was.

Clara

It would be pretty important to get ahead of the rumours among loopers though, missing a loop right after such a catastrophe and then coming back later would probably be bad for her reputation

Reed R Gale

I wouldn't be surprised if Xuriha is the amatuer necromancer they're worrying about. I wouldn't put it past her to talk smack about herself. But yeah, good observation in regards to Dsjaho-an and the class! I hadn't made that connection.

Reed R Gale

I really like this segment. It highlights just how useful the Thrones are as resources, while also illustrting them as the greatest risks. Very narratively useful. Anyway, I trust a cutie, so RIP Dsjaho-an. Sorry your contingency failed. I wonder if it was the reaction theory as Msharlo mentioned, or if it was a hesitation or something.

Joe ?

Oh man potential theory. They mind ripped Suria day one and then erased her memory of it. Maybe they didn't get the full picture, because the process isn't perfect. They judged her to have a low that level because of her delayed start, and they saw that hidden loopers have revealed themselves to her. This makes her the perfect looper to use as bait. Naturally the other loopers would see something is going on and want to contact her. Also I just realized that with all the other loopers being young nobles, the plan was probably meant to lock the magically talented nobility of the world in a time loop with the perception throne guy. They'd act as hostages and easily moldable proteges, and he could use them to rule the world by training them up and sending them home to influence their home countries. Suria's inherent time affinity stole his slot in the spell though.

Accursed

I was so close with my guess, I thought it would be Jeilin not Dsjaho-an. Still, as long as some of the Akrashics(who i imagine in red shirts for some reason) don't I'll feel clever.

Kalliope

Oh, fantastic. I do think that talking more circumspectly or obtusely would be wise. But maybe that wouldn't be enough to fool anyone in any case ...

TheShadowSlayer_

Yuuuup. The professors are already on the lookout for suicide agents, and there’s no way they couldn’t detect that. The question is if they found him BECAUSE of the necklace, or because he was overconfident. I figure some random kid walking around with a suicide necklace is suspicious as HELL.

Hades

The mind rip theory doesn't make sense. Suria knows a good chunk of the loopers and most of them are still walking around. If they'd done that they could have rounded up, interrogated, and offed almost all of them, Suria included, since she's actually technically the least useful and influential of all the loopers.

Joe ?

Not if they're using her as a lure. Xuriha hasn't revealed herself to anyone but Suria. What if there's more hidden loopers? If they had ripped her mind, they'd know she isn't powerful enough to be a threat, and that she hasn't yet gone down the depravity spiral. That means if they needed someone on the inside, she's the best bet. Actually now I'm wondering why they don't just alter the loopers minds so they report to them at the start of each loop to work as double agents.

Msharlo1

Rumors about what? Adwyrma can and probably would throw shade at her but it would be pretty one sided and she could always claim early death. It isn't like she owes them anything or has any agreements to uphold.

Boom Shakalak

Thanks for all 5 chapters this week. They were all very good 👍

Keid

I'm assuming that the suicide device was corroboration but the more worrying possibility is what if the Thrones were simply monitoring every remaining vendor of seed crystals? Suria and the loopers have begun to grow more comfortable that not everything could possibly be being monitored, Dsjaho-an even mentions him and Jeilin running tests, but they should be keeping their guards up for active traps that they could be being funneled into. If rather than observing the city they had observed the very limited number of new locations that they sent first year loopers to (and older loopers who want to investigate the change) then they could've caught that whole conversation. In response, they wouldve soul killed Dsjaho-an on sight, knowing about his contingency, and then, knowing Suria didn't have a contingency from the conversation, dangled Suria out in public as bait to attract more loopers, watching her more closely Suria and Xuhriha might both need to die right now to have any hope of survival.

Keid

So the thing with the artificially grown mana crystals was clearly a trap, but I wonder if it was a trap in more ways than one. Like, growing the crystals might reveal something about the mana of the person growing it, whether they have a much larger mana pool than would be expected from their runic capacity, or maybe crystals grown from someone's magic can be used to determine what types of magic they have become accustomed to. But, more importantly, it seems to have funneled first-year loopers to a few easily-monitored locations. The thrones may not be able to monitor the whole city, but can they monitor a small handful of shops that actually sell seed crystals of the required level of quality? Almost definitely. The conversation with Suria might even be what tipped them off about Dsjaho-an, and if they had heard that conversation they would've eliminated him without bothering to attempt capture, before he was even aware of it, so his contingency wouldn't work. I feel like this has to be an abort loop situation for Suria. If she can manage the resolve then her force spell that can spike tiny monsters should be able to travel through her eye to her brain. Xuhriha is probably at risk now too just for casting the silencing spell.

Keid

Two other thoughts: 1. Did Suria ever actually receive the promised letter from Maut-mai? If this ever happens again is exploring the world a safe option for avoiding danger, or did Maut-mai get eliminated because she ran, and has Suria just been too busy and overwhelmed to notice? 2. Could Professor Abouric actually be pro-looper and trying to help them by giving anyone who seems interested in time magic an innocuous-seeming title that contains relevant inscriptions? Drazen apparently specifically noted some kind of betrayal and some kind of miscalculation, and then in this loop, after being confronted by the reality that he is a non-looper in a loop, processed to take a shuddering breath and wordlessly attack Abouric first, from behind, with, "a lethal spell." Could the realities of the loop be of Abouric's designs with Drazen just being an unwitting accomplice? Flora of the Imperial Wastes seems like a study of plants that just so happens to contain lots of methods of stopping reactions. And Abouric did specifically mention that a short-term timestop would be an effective and legal alternative method of halting reactions that is generally applicable and not limited to any one situation... And it also seems likely that a book about flora wouldn't instantly be flagged as having time magic inscriptions. That book doesn't seem like a trap, since most non-loopers would also check it out with that kind of recommendation, but it also seems too specifically helpful to be pure coincidence. Maybe Abouric's looper-hunting efforts are just an effort to weed out the worst of them?

Keid

Dsjaho-an died after taking a risk to reach out to Suria to offer her help, nobody actually knows what happened between Suria and the Thrones after the Convocation Hall incident, but they know that she temporarily disappeared with them and then was put up in new housing with a stipend. In a whole extended-length loop, surely someone is going to raise questions about all of that an suggest that she might have been slowly leaking information to pick off people she doesn't like or thought she could get away with. And they already view her as being so standoffish... Letting that fester for however long the loops last after all of these deaths does actually seem risky, even before Adwyrma is accounted for. Suria might be better off just leaving in the first 2 minutes and not even bothering to hide the body, that way if Adwyrma rushes there again she is out of harm's way. The cat is probably already going to be out of the bag on confirmation that soul deaths extend the loop, since they will have been several soul deaths this loop and I'm guessing it's going to extend a lot more than it had previously.

DrSubterfuge

I'm skeptical that Suria is being used as bait. She got the Thrones to argue against using surveillance on her when they sent her to the party, and presumably the same logic still applies: it isn't undetectable and is too likely to tip their hand. Definitely kind of creepy that Dsjaho-an died so soon after talking to her, but the guy was acting like he was invincible. It isn't hard to imagine that he was just hoisted by his own petard.

Keid

I mean, the remote scrying that they might have used for the party has such issues, but that doesn't mean that all potential surveillance methods do. Just before that I believe Professor Huen mentioned Rije tailing a looper and observing two of them interacting and discussing the loop. It seems likely that he has some sort of enhanced stealth and/or enhanced listening spells in play to make this easier. There is no reason they couldn't employ similar methods at the seed crystal shops and just to physical watch Suria like they watched the unnamed buisiness-looper.

Storyflower

A stasis spell should work two ways. There is no reason to surmise that freezing time would only work in one direction (unless it is slowing time). This could be a way to send materials to the next loop from the previous one.

DrSubterfuge

We do indeed have an example of more mundane sounding surveillance. But nothing says that they had to have used it at the seed crystal shops either.

Msharlo1

How is the crystal thing a trap? I'm not really seeing it. I took it as a reference for how dsjaho got caught (his device used a leaking crystal which made its existence obvious)

Keid

A portion of the class curriculum that was usually taken up by a lecture implying that crystals are somewhat useless was replaced by one in which it was suddenly mandatory to do, requiring obtaining a variety of unfamiliar resources and circumstances in a way that can't just be avoided without drawing attention. That kind of deviation seems unlikely to simply be a coincidence in this particular loop, and it seems like there are a lot of ways to collect relevant data from this assignment that loopers wouldn't have any idea how to obsfucate.

Exarion

I don't like this Xuhriha girl. And if I were in this world and one of the loopers, I'd try to assassinate all the professors involved in this nonsense. Aside the marble guy, the others are still human and should be susceptible to mundane dangers that would kill other humans, no?

Biotricsx

WHY is Suria blowing her cover? Wasn't she concerned they had a bug on her? When Dsjaho-an talked to her...and when Xuriha talked to her. I would have thought she would just say, "Sorry I dont know you." to Dsjaho-an or something. Secondly, either the professors overheard Dsjaho-an and Suria talking, but they would have mindread her in that case....or Xuriha did something to Dsjaho-an. Maybe its just a coincidence.
