I said that TWC7 would start in February, and I'll stick to that promise, but there's one final issue we need to deal with yet: the title.

I was fond of "Wakerite" myself, because there's a bit of somberness to it. My primary concern was that people would read it as a mineral, waker-ite. But someone has pointed out that it could also sound like a sleep medication, and I'm afraid they're right. =/ That wasn't on my mental radar at all, but that's probably how it will read to many people.

While I generally feel that later titles are not very important from a marketing perspective, I think this is worth revisiting in general. I want the series to have fun titles.

I've considered all kinds of things since I started writing this book. I considered "Ascentpath" for quite a while to just emphasize the ascension. "Graverise" was on the list for a while before I decided it felt too necromantic. "Zenithspire" or "Zenithvault" both have a nice sun motif, but might be too obscure (some readers vocally prefer direct titles like Bloodshadow). I've also considered just modifying the current title slightly and going with "Wakespire".

What do you think? No poll this time, because I'm really all over the place with this one instead of considering several likely titles. Whatever the case, I hope to pick a final name for the competition and the book, then we can settle in.

Let me end with some good news: I think I'm entirely done with all TWC7 edits (barring something new and these title issues). So there are few obstacles left to beginning a regular chapter posting schedule.

Titles are hard... Of those, Zenithvault has the best ring to it in my opinion

Jerek Kimble

Wakerites might be sufficient to get the meaning you are looking for. Or Wake Rites.

holothuroid

It's apparently Shift+Enter to get new line... Honestly, I thing the titles are the weakest parts of the series. I cannot even remember the order of the books without looking it up. Soulhome, yeah, that makes sense. Rainhorn? They do hunt some, but is that really the central part of that story. Archcrafter is alright, although a bit bland. Chasmfall is cool, they go the chasm and all. Bondsfungi? Bloodcrete? Yeah, those do appear, again are they central to the story? I don't have a suggestion for you. Sorry.

Glaurung

Wakespire sounds good to me

Jerek Kimble

Zenithvault seems good too, barring any knowledge of why there’s a vault

Jerek Kimble

Since I’m assuming it’s similar to the rites like funeral rites.

Discordia

The previous names all have been simple and direct so I think a direct name such as , Ascension would be nice Though that might be too mundane for some

Mpkfresh

I’m leaning toward Wakerite or Wakespire. I read the first as Wake-rite so it didn’t bother me but the second can be Wake-spire, like a monument maybe, or Wakes-pire, like a funeral pire. Both sound cool.

Corwin

With Wakerite I would look at what it is used for. And maybe tie it into either the character or the room it is used for

Jerek Kimble

Pyre is the funeral pyre, no?

Imp

I like wakerite for a few reasons. One? Wake rituals sounds good. Two, I LIKE the titles that sound like sublime materials, so the whole mineral/medicine angle is a plus for me.

Imp

Bonus points if you slip a sublime mineral or medicine with that name in too

Slightly Morbid

Wakerite really sounds like a mineral to me. Zenithvault sounds like an oxymoron. A vault doesn't seem to be the place for the highest point in the sky. I'm more into Wakespire or Zenithspire. But honestly, name isn't that important for me regarding a book in the middle of a series. I can do with any of them.

goi

I could see Authority being a fitting title to really get the whole point across

Mpkfresh

Yea but it you sound the same. I’m saying that either would give the same feel of relating to death.

Airathalis

I like Wakespire or Zenithspire. I think Ascentpath or Graverise are the worst options of the bunch solely because they lack smooth flow compared to other titles suggested and other titles in series. I still would probably prefer Wakerite over all though given that its made clear what it is/how to pronounce early in book based on chapters we have so far

Brandon C Yee

For me at least Zenith titles are fine. Wakerite I read as "Wake"+"rite" like awakening rites. I'm guessing that since we're going to Authority → what an Authority has power over →rights/rites ...then it is a pretty clever play on homophones.

Patrick

I like Ascension. And Authority Wakespire maybe

DiAlpha

Wakerite sounds fine to me honestly, not to call into question your other titles but they weren't words people would understand without the books context. So it's par for the course imo and I think it's 1000% okay

sarahlin

While that would be a solid title, I've used a compound name for every book in the series so far and I feel like I should stick to that.

sarahlin

Ah, "pyre" is a very useful word for this context.

Felix Smit

I like the original the best, to me it has a similar 'feel' to bloodcrete. Wakespire is a decent alternative. I enjoy how the previous titles were references to major aspects of the books without spoiling anything. With regards to this I would avoid anything "~vault"; if an old cache or heist is a part of the story I would constantly be waiting for it and if its not in the story then its probably not relevant enough to be a good fit. Ascentpath sounds good and I kind of expect that Theo will be acsending soon. So no worries there. A compound with "Zenith~" is a bit lengthy in my opinion, maybe apex something could work better. I dont know how I feel about graverise.

Jacob Moore

Maybe I've been playing too much RuneScape lately, but Wakerite reads like Waker-ite to me. I like the idea though, I would just modify it to make it less ambiguous. Like Wakespire.

Nikolay

Wakerite is the best sounding one to me, short and to the point. Maybe because I am not a native English speaker, it didn't occur to me at all to read it as Waker-ite. I wonder, could a synonym for wake work instead? Vigilrite?

Conrad Wong

I would have read 'Wakerite' as 'Wake Rite' in the context of the series so that's fine, IMO. Wakespire is good. Ascentpath sounds generic, Zenithvault and Zenithspire are okay.

Lamsey

I'd be in favour of using "wakespire" to refer to the competition building, and continuing to use "wakerite" to refer to the ritual itself, with the former becoming the book title.

Robin

A vaulted ceiling would be at the Zenith of the room in a way, kind of makes me like the contradiction you point out though 😃

sarahlin

While I probably wouldn't use that combination, "vigil" is a very good suggestion!

sarahlin

This is an interesting idea, but I'd have to go back through the book and be careful about editing it, instead of doing a find and replace...

Cameron C

I like wakespire personally. You could also do the Waking Rite maybe?

Guilty343

Wakespire Ascentrite Zenithspire Capstone Pinnacle Apexrite Apogeerite Nadirite Apogeespire Vigilspire Crescendo This is tough Wakespire, Vigilspire, might be some of the better options. Apogee or Lagrange would be cool to use but they don’t exactly roll off the tongue and probably wouldn’t be super relevant to the story.

benjamin ireland

You could do like "the wakerite" and change the context of the word, but then it doesn't fit the metanym of the rest of the series

Craig

All your names are great. I have no opinions other than thank you for writing

sarahlin

Haha, I think I should probably work on the name some more, but I appreciate your support!

bcdp

I am not a native speaker either. And i totally read it as mineral. And when that was excluded in the post here, as "awakening ritual". I don't know the real meaning (didn't read the book yet), but I wouldn't have associated it with words like vigil or pyre until I read the comments. So I get the impression, that the people that are okay with the title either have more context or happened to have the right association at first reading. Wakespire doesn't have that problem, but yes, words like vigil or pyre have a stronger association right away.

terran hirons

Pyrerite? Also you could release your early chapters without a title for the book, just put a temporary heading? Im just fiending for more chapters lol

Runcible Technician

To bad you can't do anime splashes to differentiate Wake/Rite! (Anime protagonist bursting through title screen). Style choises will get you every time.

sarahlin

I love that one in theory, but it would read as the material "pyrite". Don't worry, it's not like chapters are trapped behind this issue! You'll be getting more next week regardless, though I really hope to have settled on the final names by then.

Slightly Morbid

Wait, the "spire" part was supposed to be associated with "pyre"!? I read it as a a tall and extremely steep mountain or possibly a tower. But I mean, I don't really care that much about the name. And if the name seems a bit off, it can always be explained in the text. Like letting Theo be surprised by the real meaning of the term, because he had expected it to mean something else.

Alison Stoneklifft

Out of all the ones you've mentioned I'd agree Wakespire seems direct enough

Haven Lee Murphy

I'm going to go with wakespire, I really like that title. That said, the Zenith titles are pleasant as well. It's rather easy to see the dilemma as well.
