No you absolutely don't need to watch House Of The Dragon first.. It was released years after Game of Thrones as a prequel and it's still not done anyway... Just look at the map, keep remembering the names and you're good to go

The annoying thing is George hasn’t finished the books for either… Thankfully at least the content for House of the Dragon is done but dude still hasn’t finished Fire & Blood in its entirety.

There’s 0 need to watch HOTD first, you’re gonna be mad because the cinematography in HOTD is SUBSTANTIALLY better. But they also haven’t even finished it yet. GRRM also wrote Fire & Blood (The Source Material for HOTD) after the GOT book series. You already started GOT, the names are complicated, the dates and places matter, no need to over complicate and restart. Just my opinion 🤷🏽‍♂️

So basically, the throwaway comment littlefinger made to Ned when he came into the court was him saying that Neds older brother gave him a scar because of Catelyn, and ended with something like she's a special woman, there is some lore there but its more in the books than the show if you want to Im happy to give a brief summary with no spoilers!

Okayy so Catelyn was originally in betrothed to Neds older brother who was the original heir to Winterfell but he was executed in Kings Landing by the mad king, him and his Dad (which was mentioned in the convo with Ned and Jamie). their execution started the rebellion and after the rebels had won when Ned returned to winterfell he married Cat, it was always a marriage to consolidate the allegiance between the riverlands (where Cat is from) and the North. she was originally dissappointed because Neds older brother was known to be the taller handsome one but she fell in love with him after seeing "good sweet heart beneath his solemn face".

LIttlefinger had a crush on Catelyn and made a remark about her towards Neds older brother while they were betrothed and thats why he got the scar

I personally think it was like a jab to Ned almost to say I know your marriage, how it came to be etc, especially amongst all those Lords of the small council but in a very sly way

Sayings or names like taking the black or Khaleesi, the mad king are mentioned multiple times later on and you will get more detail on it. Don't worry not getting it the first time.
