"Can you wash off radiation?" No, but actually yes. You can wash off the matter which is still about to decay and release radiation. Every radioactive element has a half-life. That's why the female scientist wipes the dirt off the window. In the dirt are radioactive atoms which haven't decayed yet. Radiation is alpha-, beta- and gamma-particles. Beta and alpha are charged particales: Electrons and helium nucleus (2 protons + 2 neutrons) Gamma: high energy photons (like x-rays)

The dudes in the masks washing off the guy that drove the truck was part of my job, when I was in the army as a decontamination soldier. It's basically just water with some kind of soap to wash off the radioactive dirt. Even in exercise those suits are super annoying. Cold feet in the winter. Super hot in the summer. No air from the outside except for the filtered air through the mask, no wind to cool you off and you suffer in your own sweat. 😀 Can't imagine how awful this would be in a serious case. As a decontamination soldier you're basically always the last one to get decontaminated, because you do it for others first... hours upon hours in those suits.

ive watched the series twice since you posted the first episode. And I STILL cannot tell you the name of a single character. So dont feel bad. And to blow you mind. My father was 4 years in the fire department just outside of new york city when this event happened. and every 3 for 3 months the chief made him go onto the roof and measure the radiation. All the way over here they were detecting levels that were above normal. nothing dangerous. but still detecting it.

physicist not psychiatrist 😂 Ulana Khomyuk

Nuclear reactors run on nuclear fission and the sun runs on nuclear fusion. The Sun also throws out a ton of radiation, but Earth’s atmosphere blocks most of it, so we stay safe.

Deke_HFX

Yes, Alexei Ananenko, Valeri Bespalov, and Boris Baranov were the names of the three men who helped save Eastern Europe by going underneath the plant.

Freja Corbinne

The man with the forehead birthmark in the Kremlin meetings is Mikhail Gorbachev, who was the leader of the Soviet Union from 1985 until the country's collapse in 1991. Per my historical understanding the Soviet Union wasn't quite as violently repressive in the 1980s as depicted in this series. People weren't constantly being threatened with being shot for what they said or did the way they were during Stalin's years. Stalin died over 30 years before Chernobyl.

Freja Corbinne

Ulana isn't working at a power plant, she's a researcher at a nuclear science institute. She understands a lot more of the science around nuclear energy especially things like chemical, physical, and nuclear reactions, whereas the operators of the plant are engineers and specialize more in reactor design and operation. they're highly overlapping but still distinct positions. The reading at Chernobyl from the first episode was 3.6 roentgen. The reading in Minsk at the beginning of this episode was 8 milliroentgen, or 0.008 roentgen. The roentgen isn't used anymore as a unit because it's not useful in measuring things like the effects of radiation on materials or human bodies, as air is ionized differently than body tissues or other materials and this changes depending on factors like the type of radiation

I feel like I spent a lot of time in this showing wishing i could go back to mr professor man cause i get some hope from that pov lol

Jordan Clark

It’s even crazier when you think there’s nuclear power plants in America even now which I feel like there’s a lot more ways of preventing this from happening. But I guess you never know which is very scary

Jordan Clark

You may have known this but the man playing Legasov is Jared Harris who is the son of Richard Harris who played the first Dumbledore

Freja Corbinne

going into more detail would be spoilers for later episodes of this series but basically the specific types of failures that caused this accident is not possible in other reactor types

Freja Corbinne

the atmosphere blocks most of the elecromagnetic radiation and some of the particle radiation, the earth's magnetic field deflects or blocks most of the charged particle radiation (mainly protons and electrons but some ions). a huge number of neutrinos are also created in solar fusion reactions, and the vast majority of these pass completely through the planet uninterrupted. a ton of radiation reaching the Earth comes from sources far beyond our solar system. some of it from even beyond our galaxy. this is actually the stuff that increases cancer risk in astronauts and air crew, because these extremely energetic particles impact the atmosphere and cause a shower of other energetic particles that have their own cascading effects, and on downward until some of those particles hit you or something else. this is constantly happening and also causes computers to do weird things sometimes.

Dan Tydeman

It's so amazing to see all the people who were involed in actually saving this incident from being worse that it was. They were all heroes and i'm glad everyone gets to see the people who contributed to doing their part

Morten Stenseth

Strange, why did they not translate what they say in Russian in the english Subtitle, they do in the norwegian one

Morten Stenseth

Ill translate the message when the busses arives for you: Listen, listen, dear Kamerads!! The city kongress is wraning due to an accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant that the radiation in Pridjiat can be unfortunate/damadging. Our Party, opur instutations and milletery unit takes necessary measures to ensure the safety of people and above all children. Therefore, the residents must be evacuated immediately to The Yejsk region. It will start today at 27April at 1400 o clock. I reppeat, 14 o clock it will arive busses to all residential areas. Te Police will provide eskort. you must brin ID`s. Nessecerly articles and some food for the trip. managers of the factory and institutions must write a list over everyone who stays behind and be responsible for the operation of facilities and services.the houses and residences that are abandoned will be monitored by the police. Kaerads, before you leave your residents you have to rememer to lock your windows and turn of the water. Thank you for being calm, organized, and cooperative throughout the temporary evacuation..... and it starts over again.,

Morten Stenseth

I was there as he ruled and it was safer a lot safer then under Stalin, belive me.

My_Cousin_Mose

The bravery of the 3 men who went under the plant cannot be overstated.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this yet but at the beginning it’s 8 milliroentgen they’re detecting in Minsk. The unit of measurement they were using at the Chernobyl site was in just standard Roentgen. So while 8 milliroentgen is still significant that far away, it’s still much much smaller than what they’re getting at the site.

Clay F

I recognized the character right away as Gorbachev b/c of the distinctive birthmark and the context. Gorbachev won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for easing Cold War tensions.

GoldenGateBridge

You’ll never read this, but you had to have seen this in high school. That’s where I first learned about it and I’m about ten yrs older than you and went to an absolute trash broke-ass hs on Big Island, HI., which means we had very old text books. I remember flipping thru a history book seeing a photo of abandoned cluster of moldy towers, light poles, sidewalks, etc. in overgrown vegetation. It immediately peaked me and I saw called Pripyat, Soviet Union. That’s when I first read up on it. Of course we’ve learned more over time, but this show is so good and informative. Great work on your part✌️
