Personally Dany’s arc was rushed and not having 10 episodes in Season 7 and 8 is to blame. The bad writing kinda showed around Season 5 but it really showed in Season 7.

Alexander Ocean

I might be coping a little because I love this show lol, but I actually think what they were going for makes sense, it just feels way too rushed getting there. Daenerys burning King’s Landing doesn’t feel random to me so much as her worst instincts finally winning. Fire has always been how she handles things when she feels threatened or rejected, and by this point she’s lost basically everyone, she’s not loved in Westeros, Jon has the better claim, and the city doesn’t see her as a savior. So when the bells ring, it’s the moment she realizes love isn’t coming, and she chooses fear instead. And Grey Worm going along with it tracks for me too. He’s not a moral compass, he’s a soldier, and Missandei was the last thing keeping him human. So yeah, the show absolutely didn’t give this arc enough time to breathe, but the direction itself doesn’t feel out of character to me. It just needed more space to earn it. Just my opinion. Still my favorite show ever.

Burak Yağız

We understand you girl we’ve all been there😄

Morten Stenseth

Tyrian snitches on the same guy who saved him when no one else in the world would who was also his friend...for what, telling Jon he would be a good king...makes a lot of sence, how is that even betraying her, why would it even mattter so much for he if Jon became king.....such a BS episode..

Ducactus

I agree it absolutely makes sense but was just rushed as hell (as you said), it's been a while but i'm pretty sure the writers were offered a few more seasons to flesh out the actual character arcs but they declined because they wanted to move on from Game of Thrones and treated the final season like an absolute pair of hacks and rushed it to get it over with. You pretty much said everything i would have said when it comes to why Dany snapped when the bells rang etc. The way the characters ended up being makes perfect sense we just didn't get to see enough of them ending up that way, sometimes it's more fun to just pretend we've skipped a season and ended up in season 8

Vishnu Vatheriparambil Mohandas

You summarised this season so well in your intro. The best summary of season 8 I've ever watched in the reaction channels.

Ducactus

Tyrion snitched because Varys was trying to poison and kill her, not because he said Jon would be a better king

Vishnu Vatheriparambil Mohandas

Varys trying to poison Dany because she's not the right ruler. Meanwhile Varys served Robert Baratheon, Joffrey Baratheon and Tommen Baratheon (Tywin Lannister) without any issues following their orders. He would have served Cersei as well if he hadn't left King's Landing with Tyrion😂

Justine Le Houx

I’m with you! I would have loved the kind of tragic figure messiah complex on Dani if it hadn’t been 0 to a 100… we could see some moments here and there but not enough. It’s not that the idea was bad, just how it was done.

Ducactus

Robert wasn't a lunatic, after Robert died then killing Joffrey would have made Tommen (Tywin/Cersai by default) in charge as you said, and killing Tommen would also have made Cersai in charge (as it did when Tommen did a swan dive). Killing Dany would have left Jon as the only eligible heir so there's not really any inconsistency in that. There's loads of stupid stuff in season 8 but this isn't one of them

WanderingBecauseLostLol

Greyworm was the only character on Dany's court that still seemed true to his character. He lost Missandei so he's snapped back into his Unsullied no-fear mindset and has always been ride or die for Dany regardless of her choices, so I respect his character's actions more than most others. Dany's lost the plot though 🤣

mRAC

"Today we are watching more game of thrones".......SIGH I love how that sentence just have lost all hope of excitement since season 5 :) We need to get you through this and then watch hotd and 7K afterwards, it will really lift your spirit :D

Michael West

You are exactly where I was after my first watch. It just was sad and frustrating. We have these epic episodes leading us here, then it just falls apart. I never had any issues with taking Dany down the “mad king” path, but it wa so rushed and haphazard. Nobody except Jon, Arya and the hound were anywhere close to being true to their character. I still love the show as a whole, but this was so disappointing. I do want to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed your reactions. You are so quick with the plots and intelligent commentary. I think you will really like the books. Truly been a wonderful journey. Thanks for letting us tag along.

Dresdon

MAN ITS SO HARD TO WATCH ! Cant wait for you watch the next GOT shows lol Also dont feel bad. Everyone hated these last 2 seasons. There is good moments but I think anyone watching couldve come up with a better story. The actors even all hated it and werent exactly hiding it.

Zach VanDyke

one issue i have with this last season which is a minor issue in reality but really annoys me is how many times they reuse lines from earlier seasons. i swear they do it nonstop as if they ran out of anything clever to say that is actually original.

Louis

Season 8 should have been 10 episodes, mainly focused on the white walkers and defeating the knight king. Season 9 should have been 10 episodes mainly focused on the assault on kings landing. And the fight for the iron throne. Just my opinion.

Vishnu Vatheriparambil Mohandas

Robert wasn't a lunatic but he was beggaring the realm. Joffrey was a lunatic and yes Tywin was in power while Joffrey and Tommen. So Varys if really cared for the realm would have worked to remove Tywin from power and continue his Targaryen restoration plan. But I don't remember him doing anything about any of it.

Charlie

Really great intro, I completely agree with everything you said, hopefully the next intro can be just as composed and articulated but it will be difficult.

Vishnu Vatheriparambil Mohandas

Golden company plot was just destroyed and totally under utilised. You know Golden Company was founded by a group of Targaryen bastards who were legitimised. They called themselves the Blackfyres and rebelled against the trueborn Targaryen line multiple times known as Blackfyre rebellions. They then went to Essos and lived there in exile and formed the Golden Company so that one day they can come back to Westeros to claim their throne. But season 8 just made them look like a useless bunch

Charlie

This episode could’ve been one of the best episodes of tv oat if it had the right build up and was done in the way it deserved.

WanderingBecauseLostLol

I remember when season 7 was announced with 7 episodes everyone immediately called it that the last 2 seasons were going to be rushed and bad 😭

Kerry Knight

We could have had a season with Arya and The Hound traveling south.

Charlie

I think tyrion had to snitch on varys because he saw him talking to jon, if jon told dany she would know it was tyrion who told varys

Vishnu Vatheriparambil Mohandas

If Dany went mad, she would have gone directly to Cersei and killed her first. But here we see Dany wasting all her time burning the city giving Cersei enough time to escape. If Cersei would have left early, she would have made to Pentos successfully 😂 None of this episode makes any sense

Josh M

You are not being too harsh at all lol. I know some people have not been happy about the comments talking about how much they hate season 8, but I like to think that most people would have the same reaction whether they knew about the fan response or not. There's no excusing some of this writing in my opinion. Like you said, Dany cooking Cersei and killing civilians in the process makes sense. Dany cooking JUST civilians makes no sense.

Vishnu Vatheriparambil Mohandas

Dany once locked up her dragons her children because a baby girl was burned. Now Dany doesn't care for innocent lives? Really? She felt bad for crucified slaves in Astapor that she tried to give them water in the walk of punishment. When Jorrah said she can't win the war without getting blood in her hands, she said "blood of my enemies. Not the innocents". Where is that Dany character? We lost her somewhere around season 5

Vishnu Vatheriparambil Mohandas

Jamie Euron fight was included just because their actors suggested it. They both are Danish actors and friends so they wanted a fight scene. This season is just fan service and cast service.

Charlie

At least the music is still consistently awesome

bard

The showrunners said that Dany's turn was their idea and not something they got from GRRM. I don't see book Dany acting like show Dany at all. To me show Dany has never really been like her book counterpart.

Vishnu Vatheriparambil Mohandas

There goes Hounds whole character arc. He was after hatred and violence his whole life. Then he started changing with Arya storyline and then post near death with the sept group and brotherhood and all that. And now he's back for vengeance again towards mountain? Another fan service

HauntedAtoms

12/10 favorite intro, hands down

Mike Smith

It wasnt until she went over the sea that she started to rapidly lose everyone close to her. It was when that started you can see that down spiral begin with her.

Cat Indigo

SFX department to the writers: we still have a metric butt ton of pyrotechnics... Writers to SFX department: cool we'll make it work.

Fyre SPell

This is what happens when the author doesn't finish the series. But yet, Wheel of Time is a complete series and they only produce 3 seasons. I'm still as disappointed at that as I am as GOT season 8.

IcySystem

Turned off the WoT series after a few minutes. Didn't enjoy it at all.

IcySystem

More crashing out please! :D

flawlessmisery

dreaded this moment since you started the series.

John Zimmerman

Jon on the Iron Throne? But ask yourself Licha, WHO has the better story than him? :D

Ambrosio Sanchez

cersei is not crafty, she's just evil. because she is willing to do evil things that other people won't doesn't make her crafty. I feel like most of the character's IQs are overblown. Like in szn 1 Tyrion puts his own life in the hands of a complete stranger in his trial by combat, great plan. Littlefinger threatens Cersei to her face and almost dies on the spot ("power is power"). Etc

zulu

I'm always eager to know how all the people who complain about Dany's turn being rushed imagined a longer buildup. I get the complaint, but if there was an entire more season worth of episodes of Dany getting angrier and angrier, the same people would complain about the show becoming too predictable and lame. When you are getting close to such a plot twist, you have to decide between making it feel predictable vs rushed. Also, through the seasons we already had countless examples where Dany's hasty and agressive reactions had to be toned down by her advisors. But now she hasn't got any advisors left.

zulu

As much as I wanted it to end differently for Jaime, in hindsight I totally get what they went for. Jaime's arc feels like the story of a drug addict. He always managed to break free of Cersei while being away from her, progressed to become a more decent person, but still kept regressing when he got back with her. His final regression is a potential tragic reality, just like with real drug addicts. I find it bold and respect it that they didn't end his arc with a fan service happy ending, but rather chose to show us the tragic reality how things can turn out.

Eve Griffin

Agree - the 2nd watch of GoT for me was actually the best. You can be removed from the insane theories and impossible expectations the show held and see why some choices actually made the most sense. This was never supposed to a fairy tale. Power corrupts, it turns men into things that they aren't. I loved it start to finish. A major theme in the show is internal battle - that we all hold good and bad inside us (kill the boy, "be a dragon", you must choose and live with that the rest of your days") and a million other references- and how we let outside factors direct our actions. Dany said it "let it be fear." She wanted in her mind, "for the greater good" as twisted as that logic is to show true terror and what she was capable of. Then rule and remove tyrants but she became clearly blinded and lost her whole initial idea of liberation. Did we need a full 10 ep season to get there - YES we did. But once I got over the speed, i got it.

Eve Griffin

literally couldve done without euron entirely or 90% less of him.

Eve Griffin

we did lose her - she started to change in S5. I think that's sometimes sadly what happens. Power corrupts and turns many people. She had the predisposition for it and it was hard to watch but I saw her making sus decisions in S5. It wasnt sudden.

JH__

i didn’t like the first season but the 2nd and 3rd seasons got way better reviews

Fyre SPell

The first season was filmed during covid so I agree it was lacking. The third season was some of the best TV I have watched.

NF

His dialogue is character assassination. Claiming to be a hateful person like Cersei is the script writers telling us something that conflicts with what we’ve actuslpy witnessed. Even at his most evil he wasn’t hateful, it was “the things I do for love.” When Cersei was humbled and humiliated she wanted immediate revenge against her enemies. When Jaime was humbled and humiliated and Brienne tried to motivate him with revenge he said “I don’t care about revenge.” The execution of his arc is horrible even if they wanted some sort of relapse bitter arc. Ideas for stories and arcs are a dime a dozen, it’s how you execute the ideas that matter and his was horrible. I’m not even including shoehorning in Euron as some end game final battle.

Ryan Ryvenclaw

Missandei said Dracarys, gotta honor her last wish.

zulu

You missed my point. I was talking about what I think the intention was by making Jaime go back to Cersei in the end and how it doesn't automatically "ruin his story arc". What you listed are fair examples of bad low-level execution of this arc and bad dialogue writing, I totally agree with you on those.

Vishnu Vatheriparambil Mohandas

What sus decisions did she make in season 5 that implied she's going to commit a genocide?😂 In the books she don't even feed any nobles to her dragons or execute Mossador. The show runners tried really hard to make her look ruthless. There is a line in the books where Dany says like why did gods make kings and queens if not to protect the people. The same Dany who worried for dying slaves in walk of punishment. She saud she don't want the blood of innocents on her hands. If she was ruthless person she wouldn't care about the charred bones of a girl. She wouldn't have locked up her children her ultimate weapon her dragons. Character change is not like that. That's why one of the best writers George R R Martin even didn't do that in the books. Such a person who cared for innocents, all of a sudden feeding people to dragons, saying that she will burn cities to the ground, won't then all of a sudden commit genocide. That's not how character arc works in a story. I'm sorry

Cole Troutman

yeah man its all cope. It's sorta like you're putting more thought behind it than the writers themselves ever did. Idk.

zulu

This Jaime / drug addict parallel is depicted across the earlier seasons which were based on the original material. After all of that, you can either give Jaime a similar redemption arc like Theon got, or you can let it slide into a regression arc. I can respect the direction they chose, even though they sadly messed up the execution.

August Banks

Regarding Dany’s arc, you really have to zoom out and look at the whole Targaryen pattern. Her father was the Mad King ; completely gone, burning people alive, and ultimately killed by Jaime. Her brother Viserys was unhinged, abusive, and would’ve sacrificed Dany or anyone else to get one inch closer to the Iron Throne. From the moment her dragons were born, Dany’s drive for the throne only intensified. The losses, the isolation, the Targaryen legacy. By the time she heard the bells that mix of power and pressure had pushed her over the edge. And fear was how she decided she would rule. To instill that fear, she cooked a 1/4 of Kings Landing. The love and adulation of the people is no longer required.

DEKU

Bye cersei 🤣🤣🤣🤣

My_Cousin_Mose

I know you like WoT but I couldn't get past the first 3 episodes. I felt the changes they made were not only unnecessary but also seemed to disregard the lore.

My_Cousin_Mose

I have always hated the ending they gave Sandor. When he went to take Sansa from the battle of Blackwater he talked about getting away from fire and war. When he was with Arya he spoke of becoming a sellsword in Bravos even though his brother was in the Riverlands. He mentioned one time that if they ran into The Mountain that they could both cross a name off their lists but he never sought his brother. The Hound wanted to LIVE. So yeah I completely agree. People online clammored for "Cleganebowl" and the showrunners gave it to them. If the writers had just wrote a good ending to his arc people would have loved that too.

My_Cousin_Mose

He was wrong at every turn but only because after season 5 the showrunners gave him a -5 to his intelligence score. Old Tyrion would never have trusted Cersei.

My_Cousin_Mose

Little nitpick here- earlier this season the dead dragon destroys the wall with dragon fire. Episode 3 Jon is using walls as cover to avoid dragon fire. And this episode the fire is blowing up buildings. All I'm asking for is a little consistency.

My_Cousin_Mose

When you were calling Rick Grimes a simp those were fighting words lol. But it's warrented now. Gendry and Jon- SIMPS!!! And I agree that it would have been cool to see Gendry have an awesome battle and become a true Baratheon....but he swung his hammer like 5 times and then turned into a simp immediately after getting laid. Also- I agree with most of what you say in the intro. And I agree it might be the smart play for Dany to kill Jon but it would be an evil move. Dany always talks about breaking the wheel but assassinating good people because they get in your way just makes her another Cersei.

Funkystar

No i think if GRM ever finishes the book he might have the same idea for her, because why show us all her impulse behaviour and soo much mention of her dad and the targeryan gene? I think the show had the right idea but oh man did they fuck it up by pushing everything to 💯 I don’t know man I just wanted my favourite tv show to end on a positive note i can’t even watch the reaction because it hurts😔😭

Funkystar

Damn it I had a whole bunch to say and it just disappeared I’m soo pissed😭😭 what I was saying is. Dany going mad and burning kingslanding may have been the end goal bc if you go back to S2 finale of Dany vision with the warlock they show the throne room roof gone and ashes. Clearly red keep is done!! Just like now. And brann vision before he finds 3 eyed raven. They showed dragon flying over kingslanding the exact image we see now. Soo maybe GRM gave them notes how he invasionen the show to end but they didn’t build it up good enough or proper design the plot soo it was a mess!! That’s what I believe anyway.

Funkystar

And dany behaviour changing season by season. I would not be mad at it at all man but they just said fuck all the build up and proper plot storyline let’s just get this show over with. fucking D&D they will forever be on my list!! Destroyed one of the most iconic tv shows because they wanted that Star Wars contract!! Mfs the show was originally supposed to be 10 seasons soo it all made sense and it would have been a good ending🤷🏾‍♂️ it hurts man honestly it really does

Funkystar

Guys I always try and see the silver lining for my own sanity😭😭 let’s just be grateful for the journey instead of the ending💔 game of thrones Season 1-6 was epic in every aspect S7 was okay and first part of S8 I didn’t hate!! I will not acknowledge S8E4-6 IT DOES NOT EXIST!!! Now let’s just skip the finale and go straight to house of the dragon😅

My_Cousin_Mose

After 6 months of watching this channel I'm still unsure what a "baddie" is lol. At first I thought it was a good looking woman. Then I learned it could also be used to describe a badass woman (I think). But now Licha called Jon, Grey Worm and Davos all baddies. I can't figure this one out on my own.

My_Cousin_Mose

Lol I feel your pain on losing your comment. Those 2 visions very possibly were foreshadowing of this. We can't be sure but if that's the case then it shows you can't just have a good story you have to execute it properly. I don't place all the blame on the showrunners though. George was supposed to keep writing the books but he let them pass him.

My_Cousin_Mose

No way on skipping the finale I want to see one last crashout lol. I'm looking forward to HotD. I loathed the ending of GoT so much that I've refused to watch it until now. I've punished myself enough though, my holding out has clearly not influenced George to finish his books.

ramon carter

looks like she gonna wait and binge it

Lee Smith

I think a fun thing to morally consider after knowing jons parentage is his final crossroads convo with Ned and the calculus Ned is making about why he is choosing to wait till after Jon joins the nights watch to tell him about his mother

Paul Huffman

Don't feel bad about the negative feelings. When it came to the fandom, when these episodes were being released, most flabbers were gasted!

Brandon Morris

I think it's fairly obvious reading the books that Dany is going to go mad queen. The TV show goes pretty far to show everything in heroic lighting with her, but when you just have words on pages and no epic music and get to see more inside her head it's a lot better laid out. Long before we ever got to season 8 I expected Dany was going bad because of the books, but I think the show runners were far too interested in stuff being shocking and not interested enough in stuff making sense.

Tyson Wilson

I think the intention with both book and show was always to make Dany go insane there is too much emphasis in the show on "Half the Targaryens going mad" or the cruelty of the Mad King and how that stain will effect Dany as well as her making rash and ruthless decisions against the council of her advisers. The issue is the final seasons of the show are so rushed that this transition into madness wasn't that believable .

Nomaan

Completely disagree. The books used that line once… anyone who has read the books can clearly tell the Mad Queen is clearly Cersei and Dany is her complete opposite.

Nomaan

Why do people say this? Can you provide any passages from the books where u think this would happen?

Flexorcist

Tyrion was never great.. he has a blindspot for family and people he loves.. he was blindsided by a whore

Dan Tydeman

When I first watched this episode I burst out laughing when she started cooking all of the civilians, its so badly done I just couldn't anymore xD

Johnny R

In season 4 bran has a vision of drogon flying over king's landing. So they knew since season 4 at least.

Brandon Morris

It's been a pretty long time since I read the books, but the reason I always assumed she was going mad was because of how often she either lucks her way into things working her way or is counseled into making the right decision after thinking of fire and blood. Couple that with the talk of betrayals, euron coming for her dragons, young griff posing as a targ to suplant her, and her being a good fit for nissa nissa and it seems likely to me that she is going to be broken and chose the path of fire and blood and need to be put down. This is the only quote I remembered enough to look up, it's barristan talking about her; She wants fire, and Dorne sent her mud. You could make a poultice out of mud to cool a fever. You could plant seeds in mud and grow a crop to feed your children. Mud would nourish you, where fire would only consume you, but fools and children and young girls would choose fire every time.

Dale Gwynn

It is known that the writers and producers of this show had other projects waiting for them so I think they hurried to end the series. IMO there could have been so much more and the story lines could have been taken in a lot of awesome directions. Season eight just seemed rushed to me. But sadly HBO did the same with the end of The Sopranos. The ending of that series was... well... to be nice, very unimagined. story lines for main characters were left open with no resolve. I am not a writer obviously but IMO your not supposed to let the audience decide what happened.

Dale Gwynn

now here is my question Did Varys use his little birds to try and poison Dany? I say yes.

Dale Gwynn

When Varys was talking to Jon about the Gods flipping a coin, why didn't he even ask Varys how he found out who he really was? Or did he just figure someone snitched and move on?

Dale Gwynn

Remember her bestie's last words... Burn em.... and she did

Karina

Your Gendry Baratheon take is the dumbest critique I’ve ever heard. Yes the ending was rushed because of the stupid show runners didn’t want to do it anymore, but You critique the things that actually make sense. You are just trying to be negative at this point.

Tylor

You paused on the part I always start crying at. Because why? Literally why. So many innocents for no reason. She became her father.

Tylor

I think it’s moreso that there’s a fine line between ruthlessness, which Dany absolutely is in both the books and the show, and madness. And I believe the directors chose to show that a few actions (her dragon dying, missandei dying, the adrenaline/heat of battle) can make that fine line snap. I don’t really think it was right or wrong of the directors to go this route I just think it was poorly done.
