So many lies, fake news, and propaganda everywhere. Always has been. This is a bit of a tangent. I learned this very young, in fourth grade, when I was invited to sit in the audience of a kids' game show with bands and comedy sketches. It was all staged. The crowd going wild during the intro, the laughter at the sketches - this was the fifth take of the same boring joke. It wasn’t even the same audience the whole time. We were only there to clap at the intro, watch a few sketches and see a band play. We didn’t get to participate in the fun competitive games at all. Those were different kids, later broadcast in the same episode. If you've ever read a news articale about a topic you are an expert in or have actually been at the event they report about, it's scary how much nonsense the media puts out into the world. All this to say... it's crazy how we form our opinions on such important matters as Chernobyl, the states we live in and so on. So easily manipulated and victims to misinformation.

Very well said! This show definitely made me question how much we're actually told... Our world is full of deception at this point!

If they had shut everything down like the less experienced workers wanted to do, it would have been safe - but the test would have been a failure.

The containment facility that was supposed to last a 100 years was hit with a Russian drone during the invasion of Ukraine. It damaged fairly deeply into the shell and it's currently a big undertaking to get it repaired amid the war. You can find the footage online of the hit.

If you want more Chernobyl content there is a companion podcast with show runner Craig Mazin. It breaks down what was added, what was left out for each episode. There is also an interview with Dyatlov on YouTube. The show and podcast definitely portrayed him as a villain and I understand shows need heroes and villains, but after watching his video I saw him differently. One example is in the show we see him refusing to help with the investigation, when in reality he actually spoke with the other engineers in hospital to try and figure out the cause.

Oh and just to clarify, I am not saying Dyatlov is blameless. I think he was just another pawn on a corrupt chess board.

the graphite tips as i understand it basically acted like a plug. they were the first thing to enter the location that would have halted the reaction, getting in the way of that process and momentarily boxing off the reaction that is happening, causing that reaction to spike beyond control. think of light bouncing around in a sealed box with mirrors for walls on the inside. if there is a hole in the box, the light can escape. but is that hole is plugged to make the inside of the box a perfect mirror, the light has nowhere to escape. its the same concept for whats going on with the reaction, only when that cant escape, it breeds even more reactions.
