Since you glazed over Baela this episode a little sidenote you might find interesting during the whole succession thing. The discussion of the placement of a male above a female line is like an never ending one. They never really adressed what happened before the great council were Viserys was chosen. So King Jaehaerys had three sons. Aemon, Baelon and Vaegon. Vaegon was a maester during the great council and he declined the throne, so he was out of the picture. The important ones were Aemon and Baelon. Aemon is the father of Rhaenys. Baelon is the father of Viserys and Daemon. When Aemon as the oldest one and the heir died Jaehaerys switched to Baelon instead of declaring Rhaenys the heir. Which already sparked outrage by some including the Queen, Corlys and the Baratheons since Rhaenys mother was a Baratheon. Then Baelon died and the whole argument started again which led to the great council where Rhaenys line and therefore Aemons line was overruled yet again. So for maybe 50 years this hovered above the realm where Corlys tried to put the most senior line on the throne again. So then you could think, can we stop this fighting between the lines and just put the one on the throne that descents from both lines. And if you do this you have Baela and Rhaena added to the argument. Assuming Jace, Luke and Joff are not descendents from Laenor, makes Baela and Rhaena the only descendents from Aemon's line through Laena and added to that the descendents from Baelon though Daemon. Baela is the firstborn from the firstborn from the firstborn. With her you would have the most senior line on the throne and would have combined both brother lines.

the thing jace is saying is valyrian record say the only valyrian dragonlords can claim dragons so since targaryens are the last dragon family they are the ones who can ride but even tho they do have targaryen blood, velaryons (laena and laenor) were able to claim dragons recently. velaryons were also valyrians and maybe the history were a lie to keep the dragonlord families in power
