Fun fact. When Viggo Mortenson (Aragorn) kicked that helmet he actually broke his foot when he did it and that scream was real lol

Did Gandalf actually die? Yes and no. Since someone already told you the wizards are basically angels, Gandalf himself can’t exactly die. He’s an immortal being who has been around since the creation of the universe (same with Saruman and Sauron). But his body died. So he was sent back and given a promotion from his previous role as gray wizard to the first in the ranks of wizards (white wizard). Not going to go into all the details, but the lore of the wizards and other immortals is really interesting.

pretty sure gandalf the white is only a few days old... gandalf the grey was like 2 thousand years old. I said it was 900 before but ig he was even older. (Thats how long he walked on earth as a wizard)

also i think aragorn was raised by the elves, that's why he knows them all so well and fits in with them

Thanks for the reaction. The image for syncing was great. Aragorn is a ranger and thus a good tracker. Further, he much better than the typical ranger. Agree they should have killed Gríma (Wormtongue). Like you said, he knows too much. Two beauties = Arwen and Éowyn.

I take it you will not be inviting Smeagol over for fish Friday lol.

Excellent comment! (I'm the one who gave that context in the last movie's comments) Yes it's much easier to understand when you think of them as divine spirits rather than people. They HAVE mortal bodies but they don't need them. I don't know exactly how they could have done it but it might have been a little less confusing if they dropped a little of that lore into the film adaptation somehow. Until I read the Silmarillion I didn't really understand why Sauron was killed in the prologue but now he's this eye thing and not a person. I think I accepted Gandalf returning because in my kid brain he's magic and magic can just do whatever it wants I guess. But having this context of them being spirits makes it all actually sensical. It also makes the consequences of Saruman's betrayal really spooky to think about - if/when he loses his moral body, the Valar will never allow him to return. His spirit is just kind of trapped in limbo for all eternity. Yikes.

Andy Serkis enjoyers let's gooooooooo

I figure it might be fun now that Gandalf has been reincarnated to give just a little extra of his back story from the Silmarillion. His true name was originally Olórin (roughly translates to "dreamer" or "within dreams"), and though he served under many of the Valar the one he spent the most time under was called Nienna (which translates roughly to "she who weeps"). She is the Valar associated with grief, pity and mercy. This is probably why Gandalf is so patient and empathetic!

I'll add a bit to clear up the confusion on Aragorn - he IS a man, but he comes from a very special race of men called the Numenorians. This gets a little confusing but very basically, Arwen's father Elrond is actually half-elf half-man. He had a twin named Elros. Without going into all the mess and details the Valar basically told them both that since they were both elvish and human, they could choose whether they want to live as one or the other (this is also why Arwen is allowed to make this choice, it isn't something all elves are allowed to do). Elrond chose to live as an Elf, Elros chose to live as a man, and Elros became the first king of Numenor. Their line was blessed with long life, and Aragorn is descended from them! So he is still mortal but has double the lifespan of the average man. It also means he's very very very distantly related to Arwen but eh 🤷 after game of thrones does this phase us lol Speaking of men, I do hope you read the books someday. These films are a fantastic adaptation but for some reason they did my boy Faramir so dirty. I think you'll like him a lot more in the books.

This has always been my least favorite of the trilogy. So much time is dedicated to Helm's Deep and I like the battles in both other movies better. Still a fantastic movie! Most of your questions about Gandalf, Saruman, and higher powers are all answered in the first few chapters of the Silmarillion. Which is to The Lord of the Rings as Fire & Blood is to ASOIAF. And 3:49:05 is the correct pronunciation btw.

Nick Lackie

Yeah, I do think they could have explained a little better what happened to Gandalf, but at the same time that opens up a big can of worms that they probably didn’t want to take the time to explore.

Kemi Stanton

Yeah and iirc I know they can only pull so much from the Silmarillion, I'm pretty sure they didn't have the rights to it so idk how much they could pull reference wise

Deke

lmao

So are we not getting versions where we don't need our own copies ? :(

Licha Reacts!

I do plan on posting the edited versions but they take quite awhile to edit! ♡

the Merry and Pippin stoner comedy is an underrated side quest of this series
