Baldemort

Tom Hanks really directed this masterful episode. It showcases an amazing Juxtaposition: Being a soldier experiencing war, having PTSD on the train about the lives that Winters has taken to then be immediately met with compassion from a kid who looks up to him as a savior. Truly Oscar worthy.

Dan M

This episode sums up Winters as a leader beautifully. In the report that he prepares for Colonel Sink regarding the battle at Crossroads, he never talks about himself or what he did. It’s all about the men of Easy Company and what they accomplished as a unit. He is totally selfless. And while he is gracious in accepting his promotion, it is so obvious he doesn’t want to be behind a desk tapping at the keys of a typewriter. He wants to be with Easy Company on the front lines, leading them and mentoring them. He is truly admirable.

Dan M

In one sentence, your post above describes what we were all probably feeling the first time we saw this episode. Breathe in, breathe out…we’ll get through this together.

Robert da Spruce

It’s tough seeing the toll the war is starting to take on the men. Especially Buck. You are correct about Winters promotion. He was the commanding officer of Easy company. Then he was promoted to Battalion XO (executive officer) second in command under the Battalion Commander. And yes, Leicester is pronounced “Lester” 😄 And WTF is Jimmy Fallon doing here? 😂 Looking forward to the next episode

Clay F

Good reaction. Thanks. I think you are the first reactor I've seen who knew what SS were. You also have some familiarity with The Battle of the Bulge. An advantage of having a history teacher as a reactor. Stay warm.

Jimmie V

Ah, and now we move to the back half of the series which is the strongest.

Brad

As always with your reactions I want to wrap you up and make sure you're ok because I know that you have such a beautiful heart. Winters was the XO of the whole battalion that means he has to look out for 9 companies in the battalion, he was the true leader that we all want to have in not just the service but in all aspects of life. The battle of the bulge that we're going to embark on together is so hard to watch because the men had to endure more that anyone should have to but I thank GOD for these men all the time and I still get emotional when I watch this series every time, I'm 58 and a Desert Storm Vet and can't imagine what these guys had to go through, God Bless Easy Company and all the men and women of WW2.

Phil

As many times as I’ve seen this series, I never skip the intro. Best intro ever! Dyke is the replacement for Moose, you’ll learn more about him as the series continues.

Robert Durant

"I'm curious to see what Spiers does going forward." Oh girl you are in for a treat in the next few episodes particularly episode 7 "The Breaking Point". Spiers definitely won't let you down. And yes this episode ends with the beginning of the Battle Of The Bulge. The next two episodes will be the hardest test Easy Company will have to face in the war having to fight against not only the enemy itself, but their surroundings, the weather, lack of supplies and ammo, and poor leadership. We also get to see in episode 6 the introduction of one of the war's unsung heroes who helped so many soldiers during the hell that will be Bastogne. Be prepared to have the tissues ready, you're going to do a lot of crying from here on out.

celilmandir

Winters was in charge of 2nd Battalion, which are companies D, E and F, he wasn't overseeing the entire regiment.

Please no spoilers

Another awesome reaction. As far as the SS goes, you are right there were different groups of SS Troops, some wore all black and some were part of an Infantry regiment that were called the Waffen SS. They served a variety of different roles in the German military but were a separate branch from the regular German Army. The last episode I made a comment that the Germans had brought some of the front line troops back for rest before putting them back on the line. Some of these troops were the Infantry SS units. Bastone is definitely a huge part of the Battle of the Bulge. The German troops had launched this attack in an attempt to split the Allied lines and retake the Port of Antwerp. Ironically enough we are approaching the 80th anniversary of this battle. Some of you questions will be answered in the next few episodes.

TeeZee22

Don't really have anything to add. Just want to say it was another good reaction that made the show even more interesting to watch!

Baldemort

Gee lets just spoil the rest of the show why dont ya.

celilmandir

This episode was directed by Tom Hanks himself, evidenced by the frequent inclusion of typewriters in many scenes, a trademark of Hanks. He also has a cameo as a Red Devil in the barn scene after the rescue, though he's difficult to spot in the back left. The reason why the Germans were firing their machine gun is never really explained, though some suggested they could either simply have been practicing, or they were getting some zeros on certain landmarks within their field of fire, useful to know what kind of elevation you'd need to hit a specific spot in case of an attack. During the assault on the dike, the red smoke is some artistic liberty taken by the show. In reality the men all started running at the same time, but Winters was an exceptional athlete who simply outran the rest of his company, and according to some others who heard him talk about the combat later that day, he felt hyper-focused, and it seemed to him that everyone else was moving in slow motion, both his men and the Germans as well. The shout "Wahai Mohammed!" by the British Red Devils originates from an earlier campaign in Tunisia, where some of the Brits saw a local man shouting these words at his donkey to get him to move. The Brits took a fun liking to the cry, turning it into a rallying cry of their own, used both in battle and in bar fights - they were quite fond of getting into brawls with the US Airborne guys. It was said that if any Red Devil heard the cry while out and about in town, he'd drop everything and anything he was doing to go find where it came from and jump into the fray. Winters is now in charge (assisting Strayer) of 2nd Battalion, which is composed of Dog-Easy-Fox companies. 1st Battalion is Able, Baker, Charlie, and 3rd Battalion is George-How-Item. These 9 companies form the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, which in turn is one of many regiments of the 101st Airborne Division. At the beginning of the war, there were roughly 8,400 men in the 101st, since Airborne divisions tend to be smaller than regular Army divisions. Initially, the division comprised of the 327th and 401st Glider Infantry Regiments and the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment. Later, two new parachute infantry regiments joined the unit: the 501st and 506th. And overall throughout the entirety of WWII, more than 25,000 men were part of the 101st. Moose Heyliger claimed that, for the rest of his life, he could not remember what the challenge response should have been when the sentry shouted out to him before shooting him. I guess when you're a sentry and might be nervous a bit, hearing "IT'S MOOSE!" might easily be mistaken for some German words. I always loved how Doc Roe is chewing up Winters and Welsh about the morphine. In situations like that, the medic is the 2nd in charge after God, regardless of the ranks of anyone involved. When Bill Guarnere comes back limping with the letter from Moose, and Winters tells him "No more joyriding," it refers to an incident not shown in the episodes, happening some time between Ep4 and Ep5. Guarnere was leading some men along the front lines along the Rhine, they were spread over almost a mile, so to make his task easier of going up and down, he stole a motorcycle from a nearby farm, but a German sniper took a shot at him and hit him the right leg, fracturing the tibia. Guarnere was sent back to England, but not wanting to be reassigned to another unit (which could happen if you were away too long) he put some black boot polish over his cast and tried walking out of the hospital, but was caught and forced to stay. He told the docs he'd just go AWOL at the first chance he got. He was eventually allowed to leave about a week later, but was court-martialed and busted back to the rank of Private for his behavior. However, the paperwork never made it back to Easy Company so he rejoined it with his rank of Sergeant. Malarkey is especially upset about the cancellation of the passes, with the money he won, he'd have gone on ONE HELL of a weekend bender.. His $3600 back in 1944 would be worth almost $65,000 today.. Lt Rice who drove the jeep with the ammo at the end made several ammo runs to supply the 101st as much as he could, until he was ordered to stop by his superiors after his 8th ammo run which he literally did THROUGH the Germans lines, as they had already encircled the place. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his actions, which probably contributed in no small amount to the successful defense of Bastogne. Jimmy Fallon, not being a good stick shift driver, and being nervous acting for Tom Hanks, couldn't get the jeep into gear and needed to have 2 guys off-camera push the vehicle to get it moving. I always laughed when Col Sink tells Winters "Don't worry about administration.." when all he does in this episode is basically type combat reports and inventory lists.. Yes, Lt Dike is Moose's replacement commanding Easy. You'll grow to absolutely love this man, don't worry.. ;)

Dan M

No, I never get tired of listening to the opening theme. It fills me with a sense of pride every time.

Dan M

The SS wore different uniforms throughout their existence, but the all black is the one that most people associate with them.

Clay F

Enjoyed your comments.

celilmandir

Glad you do, my friend! I enjoy sharing them.

Lee Aguera

Such a good reaction. Such an amazing show. I'm so glad you're enjoying the show, even if it's incredibly hard. But I still hold Band of Brothers to be the single best show ever made. Keep up the great work! And if you need to, take breaks, you're right that the second half of the show is the heavier stuff.

EDinMCO

Dude, spoilers!

sammy

Couldn't watch it i will wait for you tube i guess

EDinMCO

Another great reaction. You are an astute observer which will pay dividends as you progress through the back half of this series. I also want to re-post this caution since you’re watching BoB on Netflix: Some of the episode descriptions contain spoilers. Avoid reading them if possible.

samcro92

Winters new position, basically when he was in charge of easy company he was like their teacher and they were his class of students, now he's basically been promoted to principal and he has multiple classes to look after, but easy will always be the most important to him.

Kevin Sisco

Is it supposed to be muted and blurry??

Ron A

yes, just start your own copy of Band of brothers and pop the window out "picture in picture" and drag it over the video and press play when she does. then you can watch the whole episode with her (and you can decide how big you want it, or if you have two monitors you can have her on 1 and the show on another). it has to be that way because she does not own the copyright. so if she did not blur the episode HBO could take down her patreon.

Kevin Sisco

Got ya. That makes sense.

Ron A

the assult winters did on the crossroads are still studied today in military acadamies in western countries. we studied it in Norway, we had some american dude that came over on a Nato excersice and they broke down the crossroads tactics for how to assult with a small troop against unknown (but probably stronger) enemy. Wnter is a great leader and tactician. he always look out for his soilders so it had to hurt to not be in the thick of it with them everyday. the next two episodes are rough.

Larry Darrell

I’ve come to look forward to your comments, thanks.

celilmandir

Thanks my friend, I enjoy sharing these little bits of info that add context to some of the scenes :)

A slower episode this one, but beautifully directed, and I think by Tom Hanks too. The calm before the storm, as we see where the company is at, mentally and physically; and its good to focus on Winters here, and see that he isn't this perfect superhero commander, but someone who feels everything he does, and copes with it in his calm, collected way - how I don't know. The metro scene is masterful, especially when they flick to the French kid, and immediately to the teenage German boy, as we see him smile, then immediately the smile fades as he knows its his last breath. That stuff would live with you for sure. And to then see Buck and how he is struggling too, silently while the film is going, not taking any of it in, is harrowing stuff. Neal McDonough, who plays him, has these really piercing eyes, and they capture everything that Buck is dwelling on in that moment. He's one of my faves in this show, especially with what's to come. Also as you speak about the SS troops they get here, kill and take prisoner, I like Winters leaving the soldier who will escort the prisoners away, with one bullet, as I think in an earlier episode, he mentioned he was Jewish; so his anger will be at the surface there, and it needs quelled. This coming arc is brutal, and will test everyone to, and beyond their limits.

Ziro the Hutt

Yeah I've had the soundtrack there for at least 15 years, probably more. Its one of the greats.

Ziro the Hutt

Ha yeah I forgot, Hanks has a collection of typewriters, so nice to see how he incorporated them into this episode as a way to recall what Winters went through.

Rob Jaycox

Yes, as you stated, what makes this series stand above about every other war film, is the no music and use of hand held cameras during the fight scenes. I am really enjoying the job you are doing reacting to this.
