I cant watch till later. Did she do the 1980 version or the 2005 version?

It’s been a minute (more like 10 years or so) since I’ve seen this movie, so my memory of the plot is a bit “foggy” 🤓. Looking forward to revisiting it with you later tonight. This movie should be a good lead up into The Mist, which I’m REALLY looking forward to.

Haven’t seen this since it originally released…when I saw it at a drive-in! (So, not the ideal environment for a thoughtful viewing.) Cannot wait for “The Mist,” though, which is one of my favorite horror films and a perfect pairing with this one.

You’re right. It is an oddly comfortable horror flick. It’s one of my favs… but it wasn’t at first. I wasn’t too taken with The Fog the first time I saw it. I didn’t think it was too scary and wondered why it was considered such a Classic beyond it being a John Carpenter film. Just thought it was OK. Then I watched it again and realized something. The opening scene with John Houseman telling the Ghost Story around the campfire. That is what the film is. That’s what the film tells you it is in the beginning. It’s a little cozy spooky campfire story. That’s the feeling I get every time I watch it now. It really is a comfortable little film.

The original Scooby Doo Cartoons actually predate this movie by a decade so the movie has no influence on them. The film was inspired by taking elements from certain specific historical events and combining them with certain life experiences of John Carpenter and others to come up with the tale. All too elaborate to go into here. l loved your use of the word nostalgia to describe this film. I saw it when it first came out and promptly dismissed it. Watching it now does bring back a sense of nostalgia 46 years after the fact. It was good to see young Jamie Lee Curtis two years after her break out role in John Carpenters Halloween. Now you have to watch this one for Halloween next month. As far as jump scares and tension it makes this movie look like kindergarten. Mayor Williams was played by Curtis' real life mother , Classic Hollywood and Legendary actress Janet Leigh who starred in Alfred Hitchcock's ground breaking movie Psycho 20 years earlier. She was one of the most beautiful actresses to ever grace the screen and was a true power house in her own right. Now you have to watch Psycho as well!

Did you think you'd ever react to a movie about Leper cons?

If you’re interested in more John Carpenter films, then you should definitely check out… Christine (1983) - another atmospheric gem in Carpenter’s catalog. Incredibly spooky and terrifying. Based on a Stephen King novel, same as The Mist. Halloween (1978) - obviously, next to The Thing this is Carpenter’s best and most masterful. Starman (1984) - Carpenter’s Sci-Fi masterpiece. This is his Close Encounters.

John Carpenter was actually in the movie for a brief appearance as Bennett at the beginning when we meet father Malone. Adrienne Barbeau who was Stevie, was married to John Carpenter at the time of filming this movie. I had the pleasure of meeting her earlier this year, she was so kind and we have a nice time just talking. She was the voice of Simone in Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island, so funny you mentioned Scooby-Doo. Janet Leigh was also in this movie as Kathy, you would have seen her in Psycho.

Thomas Manning

My guess is the movie that people were asking for this off of is the thing, also by John Carpenter.

Jeff Turner

Janet Leigh (Kathy) is Jamie Lee Curtis' mum IRL

Just watched the reaction, and this film gets creepier and creepier every time I see it. I’m always amazed at John Carpenter’s subtle low-key genius and the amount of terror and suspense that he can create with so little. Alfred Hitchcock was considered the Master of Suspense before and then, IMO, John Carpenter took that mantle. If you haven’t seen Halloween (1978) then it is a MUST. I also highly, highly recommend Christine (1983)

Sweet… sweet Halloween candy. ;-)

One of my favourites as a kid. Widows Bay on Apple TV has the same cosy horror feel.
