Topher, I might disagree with you about the final scene! I actually think that final scene was not about the others being like "oh my god! two boys sleeping next to each other? they must be gay, off with their heads!" at all and more about Tanrak and Barth being afraid (therefore paranoid) that their sexuality will be discovered even by such an innocent action. You mentioned that the reaction of the characters is bigger than what is actually happening, but the characters don't look angry. Disapproving? Yes, probably because they broke curfew and a little ostracizing from the students, but not homophobic anger (yet). The reason I thought it was about Tanrak and Barth, is the way that Barth's voice was muffled to Tanrak when he was speaking to him, the way Tanrak looks like he's about to have a panic attack (anxiety that is bigger than being discovered sleeping near your friend), and the way Barth's eyes are rapidly flickering around the other characters trying to interpret their reactions almost paranoid. You can see that as Barth's eyes flicker around them, the camera is panning to their expressions like he's trying to interpret it for his own peace of mind. I think Tanrak is very paranoid and repressed about his sexuality that the idea anyone saw him sleeping next to a boy he obviously finds interesting and attractive almost sends him into a panic attack. That's why I think the final scene feels so dramatic almost claustrophobic, because it's not about the reaction of the others interpreting it as gay and therefore being homophobic, but Tanrak and Barth's fear of their sexuality being discovered. So in a way the reaction is bigger than the scene, but I think it's Tanrak and Barth's reaction.
