King Sejong the Great created Hangul in 1443 and proclaimed it in 1446, while establishing the Jiphyeonjeon for scholarly research. He implemented progressive welfare policies, including 130 days of maternity leave for enslaved women and 30 days for their husbands, and hosted Yangro-yeon banquets for the elderly regardless of status. He strengthened national defense by expanding firearms units, reforming marksmanship, and establishing the Chetamin special forces, alongside securing the Four County Posts and Six Garrisons. In science, he appointed Jang Yeong-sil to develop the Jagyeokru, Angbuilgu, and Cheugugi, while publishing Nongsa Jikseol, Chongtong Deungnok, and the medical encyclopedia Hyangyak Jipseongbang. He revolutionized the legal system by introducing a public polling system for tax reforms and the Three-Strike Rule (Samsimje) for capital crimes. To this day, he remains the most respected figure in Korea alongside Admiral Yi Sun-sin. Known for his superior intelligence, scholarly passion, and deep love for his people, his commitment to national security was evident in his final warnings to remain vigilant against the Jurchen to the north and the Japanese to the south, fearing that the nation's discipline might falter after his death.
