Episode 4 Author Commentary I wanted to portray the weight and limitations carried by Wan and Yoon(the baby king) as members of the royal family living in the 21st century. In a palace that appears so glamorous on the surface, are they truly happy? Story Breakdown (Spoiler-Free, This is just my personal opinion) 1. Wan tried to brush off the kiss by claiming it only happened because of the cameras. But let’s be honest—we all know he meant it in that moment. Either way, the wall kiss dominated newspaper front pages for days, and both the cabinet and royal relatives wanted the royal family to make an official statement as soon as possible. The Prime Minister Min argued that, “There's nothing unusual about a young pair falling in and out of love.” But underneath that statement was another layer of confidence. He already knew Heeju’s dating history and knew she tended to lose interest easily. 2. Wan was furious when the Buwongun Lord demanded that Heeju leave the private residence. But if he wanted the attacks against her to stop, compromise was inevitable. At that point, the public had already noticed that Wan and the royal family were at odds over Heeju. If the two of them continued staying together outside the palace, headlines about conflict within the royal family were practically guaranteed. In the end, Wan made a compromise: in exchange for the royal family officially recognizing their relationship, he agreed to live apart from Heeju for the time being. 3. Heeju wanted to marry as soon as possible, gain royal status, and use it as leverage in her fight against Seong Taeju over the succession of Castle Group. What the two of them needed now was intense media attention and public support. If the public became passionate supporters of the “21st-century Grand Prince’s wife,” even the royal family would struggle to stand against public opinion. Heeju decides to lean into the attention and go on a public date with Wan to deliberately stir up buzz. And, as always, Wan agrees to her plan. One subtle but interesting detail here: Wan seems much more pleased with Heeju’s naturally free-spirited style than the “elegant future royal wife” look the steward Kim tried to dress her in. 4. Heeju gradually learns just how restricted Wan’s life really is. No wearing uniforms to cheer at games, no eating casually outdoors, and even raw food is forbidden because it might upset his stomach. In Korea, there is a well-known concept called *의식주*—the essentials of life: clothing, food, and shelter. In English, the closest equivalent would probably be *basic necessities of life*. Seen through that, Wan’s entire life is controlled by rules: Even what he wears must follow regulations — 의, clothing What he eats is heavily restricted — 식, food Even where he lives is determined through political compromise with the cabinet and royal relatives — 주, shelter The sequence of scenes—from the baseball stadium date to the restaurant, and even Wan’s flashback—explains the “forbidden world” Wan lives in. 5. In the restaurant scene, Wan, Heeju, and Jeongwoo each reveal a different attitude toward the royal family’s “forbidden world.” Jeongwoo treats that world like a weapon. Even with the Grand Prince sitting right there, he crosses the line and tells Heeju not to marry him. He knows better than anyone that Heeju is the type of person who has to do what she wants. Deep down, he probably believed she would never truly survive restrictions of royal life. In that sense, his confidence feels almost arrogant. Wan, on the other hand, quietly hands Heeju the sashimi he himself cannot eat and watches her enjoy it with a soft smile. Seeing her freely experience all the things he never could, perhaps—even if only briefly—Heeju became a small kind of freedom for him. And Heeju? She just happily ate it. A total rule-breaker, honestly. Little by little, Heeju’s bright red sneakers begin to shake up Wan’s world—a world built on endless rules and restrictions. 6. After hearing Chief Court Lady Choi’s story, Heeju begins to truly understand just how tragic Lee Wan’s life has been. His obsession with safety and constant anxiety were not simply personality traits—they were scars left behind by a lifetime of losing family from a young age. Abandoned by her mother and raised within the Castle family—people who were practically strangers to her—Heeju learned to survive by keeping people at arm’s length and building walls around herself. In doing so, she never really had the chance to learn how to look closely at someone else’s pain. And for the first time, Heeju feels something unfamiliar: compassion. At the same time, Wan forced to endure yet another uncomfortable moment with the Queen Mother. There is not a single person in the royal family truly on his side, and even as the woman he chose gains overwhelming public support, the Queen Mother dismisses it without hesitation. Watching this, Wan likely feels that familiar helplessness all over again—the same helplessness that has followed him for years. Then, at the exact moment he is struggling to steady his emotions, Heeju calls. Without meaning to, Wan answers coldly. And then Heeju says the one thing he may have wanted to hear most: “I’m on your side.” At first, those words probably gave Wan something instinctive—an immediate sense of strength or relief. Then came something harder to describe: the overwhelming realization that, for the first time in his world, he finally had someone who stood on his side. But first emotions are always awkward. Instead of expressing what he felt, Wan—without even realizing it—simply hangs up the phone. 7. While driving back to the residence where Heeju is staying, Wan spots her red supercar speeding down the opposite side of the road. Without hesitation, he turns his car around and starts following her. Then he helps slow her down as much as possible, trying to keep the situation from becoming even more dangerous. When Wan was emotionally at his lowest, Heeju unknowingly became a light for him. And when Heeju and her nephew’s lives were in danger, Wan threw himself into danger without hesitation. In the moments when they needed someone the most, they offered warmth, protection, and unwavering support in their own ways. Little by little, the two of them are growing deeper in each other’s lives.
