That's right. It's the best romantic comedy of my life @^.^#

There was a whole hate campaign from the moment the teasers dropped. After considering everything, there really was no actual distortion of history. People just really wanted to bring this drama down for some reason. Fortunately, it still pulled the highest rating for a drama on korean tv this year, and is now the most watched korean show on disney+. It's just sad that the actors never really got to celebrate their success and are kind of just stuck in limbo without a proper goodbye to their characters and the show

As the second son of the royal family, Ian was accustomed to enduring everything behind the scenes. No matter how talented he was, he couldn't be seen as more prominent than his older brother, the Crown Prince, so he always had to hide and suppress his true self. That is why he deliberately shot a 7 during the final arrow exchange in a friendly match back in high school. (Hui-ju knew this at the time, which is why she mentioned it to Ian in Episode 2—about losing to an opponent he could have beaten.) It was because he knew that if he had won, his father would have hated the fact that he was so outstanding.

나 나

That is also why Hui-ju left such an impression on Ian when they first met at the archery range. As the Grand Prince, he had no choice but to endure everything, but Hui-ju was someone who fought against the whole world to get ahead (as mentioned in the web novel). It was Hui-ju, who could do what he couldn't, who drew him in. So, in fact, Hui-ju was Ian's first love from the very beginning ㅋ

The drama maintained the No. 1 position in both the drama and actor buzz rankings throughout all six weeks of its broadcast. More than 94% of the reactions were positive. After the drama ended, it also ranked first in the May Gallup Korea survey for “Koreans’ Favorite TV Programs,” which is considered a highly trusted indicator in Korea. And It recorded a 5.1% preference rating. In this Gallup, a 5% rating is generally considered a benchmark for determining whether a drama was a major hit. Exceeding 5% means the drama was very well-loved and highly popular among the general public. Among all dramas aired throughout a year, it is very rare for one to surpass 5%. Usually, only about two TV dramas per year exceed that mark. By any standard, the drama was undeniably a huge success. But, one of Korea’s most notorious online communities(더쿠) targeted the actors and fueled the controversy. Although those allegations were allegedly unfounded, malicious commenters continued to bring them up to criticize the actor, and journalists repeatedly reported on them, making the issue appear much bigger than it actually was.

서연 조

However, the accusations of historical distortion are not true. They are simply false claims pushed by haters. Even before the drama aired, they had already been spreading misleading narratives and making all kinds of strange accusations. Some journalists also published sensational stories to gain clicks, regardless of whether the claims were actually true. There is even an official statement explaining, with clear evidence, why the drama is not historically inaccurate, but the haters are not interested in facts. Their real intention seems to be attacking and harming IU and Byeon Woo-seok rather than seeking the truth.

IU is an extremely famous celebrity in South Korea. While she has a large fanbase, she has also faced hate comments and rumors for many years. Some people(더쿠) have continuously spread criticism and various allegations about her for nearly two decades. However, over time, those claims have turned out to be unfounded. The controversy surrounding this drama appears to follow a similar pattern. Despite what her haters may want, IU has consistently continued her career successfully and will keep moving forward.

Episode 5 Author Commentary Wan’s trauma begins with the pain of not being able to protect someone precious to him. And Heeju is the one who teaches Wan how to protect someone. Story Breakdown (Spoiler-Free, This is just my personal opinion) 1. The unexpected major accident became the trigger that brought back the buried trauma both of them had been carrying. Wan lost his mother right in front of his eyes in a car accident when he was a teenager. Of course, it was not Wan’s fault, nor was it a situation where he could have saved her. But the fear of almost losing someone precious once again came rushing back from deep inside him. Heeju, too, was hurt once again. Even though the car accident that nearly killed her became headline news, not a single member of her family came to visit her at the hospital. 2. During this process, Prime Minister Min learns about the contract marriage. Believing there were no real feelings between Wan and Heeju, Jeongwoo suggests that if status is all she needs, she could consider changing the person she marries—to him instead. And Heeju begins to lie to herself: That the only reason she wants to marry Wan is because of status. At this point, Heeju still has not fully realized her own feelings, so in a way, it makes sense that she would convince herself of that. The problem is—Wan heared it. After hearing the conversation between Heeju and Jeongwoo, Wan is hurt by the realization that he is someone who can be replaced. In truth, Wan had probably already realized during the car accident that Heeju had become someone he wanted to protect, even if it meant throwing himself into danger. But perhaps because he became too vividly aware of those feelings, the emotional progress the two had made after the wall kiss slowly begins to unravel. 3. Through Jeongwoo, Wan learns that Heeju’s car accident was not simply an accident, but something deliberately orchestrated by someone. At the same time, Jeongwoo says he will do everything he can to protect the royal family, and asks Wan to keep Heeju as far away from the dangerous world of royal as possible. The meaning behind those words is clear. That he is the one capable of protecting the royal family, and that the reason Heeju ended up in unexpected danger in the first place is because Wan brought her into the royal world. Jeongwoo’s words struck at all of Wan’s wounds at once—his trauma, his anxiety, and even his pride. In the end, Wan decides to push Heeju away in order to protect her. For someone like Wan, who carries the terrifying trauma of having lost precious people before, keeping Heeju away from his side likely felt like the safest way to protect her. As Jeongwoo said, unfortunate incidents had always followed the royal family. And Wan had far more experience losing people than solving those kinds of problems. After all, people’s decisions tend to come from experience. And so, even with his pride crumbling, Wan decides to distance Heeju from the royal family—just as Jeongwoo suggested. 4. The problem is that all of this happened without any conversation. From Heeju’s perspective—someone who still does not know the depth of Wan’s trauma—the man who saved her life yesterday suddenly telling her to leave the house today would feel bewildering. In his own way, Wan tried to take responsibility by ending the engagement, believing it was the only way to put an end to this dangerous and complicated situation. So, like a farewell gift, he wanted to leave behind something she truly needed. In exchange for promising the Queen Mother that he would not marry Heeju, Wan manages to obtain an invitation to the inner court banquet—a kind of “golden ticket” in this status-driven world, where simply attending could elevate someone’s social standing. It was something Heeju had wanted for so long, and yet, she is not nearly as happy as expected. For a long time, Heeju had desperately longed for recognition—from this class-based society, from other people, and most of all, from her father. But right now, the only thing occupying her heart is her hurt feelings toward Wan. In the end, what we see here is Wan completely misunderstanding what Heeju truly wants, while Heeju herself still does not fully understand what it is she truly wants. 5. Wan believes that the more precious something is, the better it is to protect it by pushing it away rather than risk losing it. Heeju, on the other hand, believes that attacks should be faced head-on, and that fear can only be overcome by pushing through it. Wan tells her, “You never learned to bend.” But Heeju pushes back, "You only know how to bend. That's why you lose to people beneath you.". The two of them still hold the same values they had back in their School days. Even though Wan had more than enough skill to win in archery competitions, he grew up within the limits of royalty—a world where he was not allowed to shine too brightly or stand out too much because of his brother. Faced with walls he could never overcome, Wan learned to survive by bending himself and yielding. Heeju, however, never stepped back. She was the kind of person who would steal a key and sneak into the archery grounds if that was what it took to get what she wanted. Perhaps, in this moment, Heeju’s fierce way of living shook something awake in Wan—a person who had long grown used to bending. After all, fire always spreads to the things around it. 6. Heeju apologizes for hurting Wan without meaning to and accepts the inner court banquet invitation—both his farewell gift and quiet gesture of reconciliation. Though she may not realize it herself, this is perhaps the first moment Heeju begins, little by little, to learn how to bend. Using the weak excuse that “it’s the last time anyway,” Wan sneaks out at night to see her. While Heeju practices walking according to royal rank for the inner court banquet, Wan—someone deeply familiar with royal etiquette—finds himself strangely uncomfortable watching her try so hard to follow those rules. By this point, Wan had probably begun to care far more about walking beside the person he loves than about royal hierarchy and rank. Perhaps this was the moment Wan slowly began to realize something. That what truly matters in life is not blindly following rules, but being willing to change narrow and suffocating ones for someone precious. 7. On a sweltering day, Heeju walks at the very end of the line. Outside the palace, she is successful enough to receive awards as a leading business figure. Yet she willingly endures this humiliation inside the royal court for a reason. Partly because the invitation symbolized the royal recognition she had long wished for. But more importantly, because she knew this was the gift Wan truly wanted to give her in the end. And yet, what Wan truly wanted to give Heeju was something far greater. Something that went beyond status and rank. It was his willingness to accept Heeju’s way of living exactly as it was: “Don’t bend. Don’t give in. That’s how you get what you want.” Perhaps Heeju did not realize it yet in that moment. That she had already received something far more precious than the recognition of a class-based world—or even her father’s recognition—which she had spent her entire life longing for. And Wan, who had spent his whole life bending and giving way, finally begins to move forward with firm resolve, determined to obtain what he truly wants.
