The series consist of 11 episodes in total. 10 episodes for survival and 1 episode for after debut story. Quite long, so I’m absolutely cool if you do 3 episodes and do other stuff (variety, etc.) and back to the documentary again. Thankfully, Jang Hyunseung, the eliminated one, debuted as a group named Beast under a different label. Not big as Bigbang, but quite popular and successful. I think Yang Hyun Suk talked hash to Ji and Tae at the later part because YG always emphasized the natural charisma oozed, and they did not because they were so nervous and just trying to remember and follow the choreography. I guessed from the talks from the staff meeting. YG said that maybe they should be more focused to get something out from Ji and Tae rather than let them focusing only on remembering choreography, and he also mentioned that Seven did not get nervous by the number of audience but actually doing better in front of larger audience. The other reason is that YG was the type of guy believing harsh talk help good one become better.

-It was (and is still) common for people in SK media to comment on people's appearances, but these kinds of jokes are usually only exchanged between comedians. Daesung is probably some of the first few who was made fun of as an idol since his looks doesn't fit into SK conventional beauty standards. In some of their old variety shows, you can see people talk about their first impression of Daesung and it's mostly always "He must sing REALLY good if he looks like that". Just a fun fact though: He is usually categorized with singers such as Kim Jongkook, K.Will and Kim Bumsoo who all share similar facial characteristics (not conventionally attractive, small eyes, wide jaw) and they are all powerhouse vocals, so I guess they are not exactly wrong about that statement lol -I don't know you've ever heard, but the fandom usually calls TOP the best dancer xD I definitely recommend checking out some of their dance videos (BANG BANG BANG in Weekly Idol and Zutter dance practice video in particular) because he's literally a meme minefield in those lol -Jang Hyunseung later left YG and debuted in the 2nd gen boy group BEAST, and they were sweeping charts back in the days too! He later left the group and is now promoting as a solo artist. (: He is also the very first guest in ZIP DAESUNG if you're ever interested in learning what he's been up to these days!

I think it's a great idea to do breaks after watching 3 episodes of the doc! Nevertheless, I haven't watched this doc in so many years, I barely remember all the details. It will be nice to rewatch it with you. You'll be getting some nice context as well for other content, since some key moments are mentioned a lot in other stuff. Anyway, honestly can't get over how young they are in this...

TOP is a very strong dancer on par with everyone else. He just did not have prior experience.

Finally, we're watching BigBang's humble beginnings in 480p with Aaron, haha. Yes, Taeyang's stage name was originally Taekwon when YG was preparing to debut GD/YB as a duo. They wanted to create a name that rhymes with G-Dragon lol. And TOP /Seungri are both Seunghyun. Regarding your point that current idols have more freedom and are less obsessed with being perfect, I think that's somewhat true, but it's largely because the industry environment is very different now. This was a time before social media and streaming platforms existed, performance was the most crucial way for a group to promote themselves. This was also before K-pop became known in any Western countries (even other Asian countries). Even domestically, the idol industry was just beginning to grow with the emerging popularity of TVXQ. Competition was extremely fierce. Most trainees never made it to debut, and most groups never became successful. Companies were also much smaller, the success of a group could be life and death for a company. I think that's why everyone is more perfectionism driven, otherwise they won't survive the competition. Nowadays, companies have much larger marketing budgets, and there are many more ways for groups to gain exposure with social media/streaming platforms/fandom power, etc. Performance is no longer the sole factor determining a group's success, and idols have more room to show their personalities and be less focused on maintaining a flawless image.
