1. About your question regarding the “9 years” line: they don’t mean that 9 years have passed since Season 3. They mean that 9 years have passed since the day Wall Maria fell, when the Colossal Titan and the Armored Titan first attacked. That’s also around the same time Grisha inherited the Founding Titan, so that’s the event they’re referring to. Season 3 takes place about 6 years after Wall Maria fell, while Season 4 is about 9 years later. So Eren is only around 18–19 years old in Season 4. He’s still alive, and he still has about 3-4 years left because of the 13-year Titan curse. 2. About Ymir: yes, she was one of the Nine Titans. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been able to turn back into a human. Only people who inherit one of the Nine Titan powers can freely transform between human and Titan form. Pure Titans can’t turn back on their own. Here’s what happened: Reiner, Bertholdt, Annie, and Marcel were sent to Paradis, and Marcel was the holder of the Jaw Titan. Before they could begin their mission, Ymir—who had been wandering as a Pure Titan for about 60 years—ate Marcel. Since Titan powers are passed on by eating the previous holder, she inherited the Jaw Titan and turned back into a human. Later, as you remember, Ymir chose to go back with Reiner and Bertholdt to Marley. There, Marcel’s younger brother, Porco Galliard, inherited the Jaw Titan by eating Ymir, bringing the power back to the Galliard family. 3. Also, don’t worry if some of the characters and Titans look different in Season 4. A lot of people get confused by that at first. The art style changed quite a bit compared to the first three seasons, and there’s also been a time skip of a few years. So not only have the characters grown older, but the new animation style makes everyone (and every Titan) look a little different. 4. About that scene where Reiner sees his old friends in the Warrior candidates: From right to left, it’s Annie, Marcel, Bertholdt, and Galliard. The one with the black hair standing between Galliard and Marcel is Bertholdt. Marcel is the one who died at the beginning of the mission on Paradis. Reiner isn’t standing with them—he’s the one looking at them. The scene is meant to show that they were once just kids like the new Warrior candidates. 5. Gabi’s last name is Braun, just like Reiner’s. They’re relatives, they’re cousins.

The timeline can definitely be confusing. 845 – Bertholdt and Reiner breached Wall Maria. Eren ate his father and became a Titan. 847 – Eren, Mikasa, and Armin joined the 104th Training Corps. 850 – The year they graduated from the Training Corps. They chose the Scout Regiment among the three branches of the military. From this point to Erwin's death. In other words, most of the events of Seasons 1, 2, and 3 take place during this year. 851 – The expedition beyond the walls, when they finally reached the sea (Season 3 finale). 854 – The war against the Mid-East Allied Forces (the war shown in Season 4, Episode 1). That's why they referred to it as the operation to retake the Founding Titan that began nine years earlier. The current point in the story is 854. I've only included information that had been revealed up to that point.
