Oh my god, I can’t believe this is finally happening!!! You have no idea how excited I’ve been for you to watch this show. It’s an absolute masterpiece and is widely regarded as one of the best Korean dramas ever made, not only by Korean viewers but by international fans too. It has everything — an incredible cast, phenomenal acting, a beautifully written story, and breathtaking cinematic visuals. I honestly have a feeling this is going to become one of your favorite shows of all time. I’m SO incredibly excited and happy that you’re finally watching it!!!😆

Wow. I didn’t expect you to react to this! This is my favorite K-drama. I want to explain the scene where Eugene cut his hair after going to the US. In the past, Koreans believed that their parents gave them their hair, so they didn’t cut it. That scene means that he chose the life of an American over that of a Korean. Also, cutting the hair was a symbol of a new generation as well. So in the latter part, the grandson of a bad nobleman cut his hair before leaving for Japan. The metaphor about hair will continue to appear afterward. Thank you for the reaction:)

Yes, the baby who was brought home along with the ashes of her parents, who died fighting for the independence of their country, is the woman you see in the ending! She’s Ae-shin, the female lead.

I’m so happy that we’re going for this kdrama😍 I’ll give you a few pieces of background knowledge that’ll help you enjoy the drama even more from here on! 59:45 Eugene cutting his own hair is much more significant than it might seem. In Joseon Korea, Confucian values taught that your body—including your hair—was something you received from your parents, so cutting your hair was considered a serious violation of filial duty. That’s why Joseon men traditionally kept their hair long, tied it up in a topknot, and wore a hat over it. So when Eugene cuts his own hair, it represents his willingness to completely let go of his Korean identity. It’s a deeply personal choice about who he is and where he belongs. And for women, especially noblewomen, clothing was also closely tied to modesty and social boundaries. A woman’s skirt was an important part of keeping her body properly covered, and physical contact between men and women was much more restricted than it is today, hence even touching or handling a woman’s clothing was something men were expected to be careful about.

As Koreans, we have mixed feelings about the Joseon Dynasty. It’s part of our history, and there were certainly great achievements, such as the creation of Hangul in the early Joseon period. However, the later Joseon period was a society that had become deeply corrupt and backward, and was increasingly vulnerable to foreign powers. Korea eventually became a Japanese colony as well. Because of this, the word “Joseon” itself isn’t always used positively in Korea. In fact, it can sometimes be used to insult or criticize our country lol. Calling someone a “Joseon person” can also sound almost like an insult, and we generally don’t have a particularly positive view of the royal family of the late Joseon period.

Also, Joseon initially refused to establish relations with the US and other foreign powers because “diplomatic relations” back then weren’t simply about signing a trade agreement. Western powers were coming with warships and demanding that Joseon open its ports, while China and Japan had already been forced into unequal treaties with Western countries. It was also a time when Western imperialism and colonialism were spreading across Asia.

39: 40 The man in red who is basically controlling the young king from behind the scenes is Heungseon Daewongun, the king's father. As for Joseon's attitude toward Western countries, there was a major reason behind its distrust. The Joseon government had seen what happened to Qing China after Britain exported large amounts of opium there, eventually leading to the Opium Wars and serious political and social turmoil. Seeing what Western powers had done to neighboring China made Joseon extremely suspicious and fearful of Western intervention. As a result, the government took a strongly isolationist approach, trying to keep foreign powers out and severely limiting contact with other countries. So why didn't Heungseon Daewongun become king himself? He belonged to a distant branch of the royal family, so he wasn't originally considered someone who would inherit the throne. However, by the late Joseon period, the direct royal line had run out of suitable heirs, so they eventually had to look to more distant branches of the royal family. His son was chosen and formally adopted into the previous king's family line, which allowed him to become the new king. Since the new king was still very young, his father, Heungseon Daewongun, gained enormous political power and essentially ruled the country on his son's behalf. That's why you see him having so much authority even though he wasn't the king himself.

aside from the story, the OSTs for this drama are so good too 💛

레쓰비 난!

Mr. Sunshine is a total of 24 episodes, and if you upload one video per week, it takes a total of six months and half a year. I recommend uploading twice a week, and in Korea, the drama actually airs and is released twice a week.

k_s_r28

Totally agree! One episode a week might take a while to finish…

aaronfreeman

Hi! Yes, I totally understand, but my schedule is already super packed as it is, so unfortunately I won't be able to post twice a week without sacrificing my work/life balance. Hope you understand!

k_s_r28

Of course, I completely understand! just happy that you’re watching Mr. Sunshine. That’s more than enough, so no worries!😊
